Quality Control of Spirometry in the Elderly

2000

We evaluated the outcome of the spirometry quality control program of the SA.R.A. multicenter project, the aim of which is the multidimensional assessment of asthma and COPD in the elderly ( ⩾ 65 yr). The factors determining this quality were also evaluated. The program was based on standardized procedures (ATS recommendations), performed by specifically trained and certified personnel; a fully-computerized spirometer with customized software was used for spirometry. A reference center made monthly controls. Overall, 638 cases and 984 controls were examined. Spirometric measurements were obtained in 607 cases and 912 controls; 508 and 747 tests with at least three acceptable curves were obt…

A cross-sectional study assessing the relationship between BMI, asthma, atopy, and eNO among schoolchildren

2011

Increased body weight may influence airway inflammatory mechanisms. To assess whether overweight-obesity (OW-O), evaluated as increased body mass index, is associated either with exhaled nitric oxide (eNO), a marker of airway inflammation, or with allergic sensitization in a large sample of children and adolescents.A cross-sectional, epidemiological study was performed on a population sample of schoolchildren evaluating 708 subjects (age 10-16 years; BMI 13-39 kg/m(2)) by respiratory health questionnaire, skin prick tests, spirometry, and eNO measure.Prevalence rates were: OW-O 16.4%, asthma ever (A) 11.9%, and rhinoconjunctivitis (RC) 14.8%. Asthma ever and allergic sensitization were signi…

PD13 ‐ Gender differences in rhinitic children

2014

Gender differential effects on rhinitis are infrequently studied. Aim of our study is to assess gender differences in host and environmental characteristics and in rhinitis severity level within the IBIM Pulmonary and Allergy Pediatric Clinic. A series of rhinitic (R) patients (September 2011 - May 2013) were investigated through standardized questionnaire and spirometry. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS. Preliminary results refer to 122 R patients: 77 males (M) (63.1%) and 45 females (F) (36.9%); age (years): 9.23 ± 3.42M vs 9.38 ± 3.02F; maternal history of rhinitis: 45.5%M vs 32.3%F (p<0.090); exposure to maternal smoking during pregnancy:15.6%M vs 2.2%F (p<0.021); exposure …

Validation of FEV6 in the elderly: correlates of performance and repeatability.

2007

BACKGROUND: Forced expiratory volume in 6 s (FEV6) has been proposed as a more easily measurable parameter than forced vital capacity (FVC) to diagnose airway disease using spirometry. A study was undertaken to estimate FEV6 repeatability, to identify correlates of a good quality FEV6 measurement and of volumetric differences between FEV6 and FVC in elderly patients. METHODS: 1531 subjects aged 65-100 years enrolled in the SA.R.A project (a cross-sectional multicentre non-interventional study) were examined. FEV6 was measured on volume-time curves that achieved satisfactory start-of-test and end-of-test criteria. Correlates of FEV6 achievement were assessed by logistic regression. RESULTS: …

P191 QVA149 once daily improves exercise tolerance and lung function in patients with moderate to severe COPD: the BRIGHT study: Abstract P191 Table 1

2012

Introduction QVA149 is a novel once-daily fixed-dose combination of the long-acting β 2 -agonist indacaterol and the long-acting muscarinic antagonist glycopyrronium (NVA237) in development for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The BRIGHT study evaluated the effects of QVA149 versus placebo and tiotropium on exercise tolerance and lung function in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD. Methods In a double-blind, double-dummy, 3-period crossover study, patients with moderate-to-severe COPD were randomised to QVA149 110/50 µg, placebo or tiotropium 18 µg once daily for 3 weeks. The primary endpoint was exercise endurance time for QVA149 versus placebo during a sub…

Early childhood growth is associated with lung function at 7 years: a prospective population-based study

2020

Previous studies have related early postnatal growth with later lung function but their interpretation is limited by the methods used to assess a child's growth. We aimed to assess the association of early childhood growth, measured by body mass index (BMI) trajectories up to 4 years, with lung function at 7 years. We included 1257 children from the Spanish Infancia y Medio Ambiente population-based birth cohort. Early childhood growth was classified into five categories based on BMI trajectories up to 4 years previously identified using latent class growth analysis. These trajectories differed in birth size ("lower", "average", "higher") and in BMI gain velocity ("slower", "accelerated"). W…

Inhaler mishandling remains common in real life and is associated with reduced disease control

2011

SummaryProper inhaler technique is crucial for effective management of asthma and COPD. This multicentre, cross-sectional, observational study investigates the prevalence of inhaler mishandling in a large population of experienced patients referring to chest clinics; to analyze the variables associated with misuse and the relationship between inhaler handling and health-care resources use and disease control. We enrolled 1664 adult subjects (mean age 62 years) affected mostly by COPD (52%) and asthma (42%). Respectively, 843 and 1113 patients were using MDIs and DPIs at home; of the latter, the users of Aerolizer®, Diskus®, HandiHaler® and Turbuhaler® were 82, 467, 505 and 361.We have a tota…

Maximal respiratory pressure reference values for Navajo children ages 6-14

2013

Background Since anthropometric variables are critical to the creation of pulmonary nomograms for FVC, FEV1, and other volumes and capacities, it is logical that anthropometric variables also influence the values of the maximal respiratory pressures (MRPs). Since nomograms are race-specific, it is important that tribe-specific tables of normal maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) be developed. To date normal tables for MRPs do not exist for Navajo children. Objective Therefore the purpose of this study was to derive MRP normative reference values for Navajo children in the age range of 6–14 years. Methods—Participants and Measurements A cross-sectional st…

The Association Between Bone Mineral Density and Airflow Limitation in a Cohort of Fit Elderly Women

2016

Purpose: As studies examining the association between bone mineral density (BMD) and airflow limitation (AL) have produced conflicting results, the current one set out to analyze if and to what degree there are any correlations between these variables in a population of fit elderly women. Methods: One hundred and twenty-one non-smoking, fit and healthy women (age ≥ 65 years) underwent anthropometric assessment, laboratory testing (serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D, parathormone, and cytokine levels), pulmonary function testing (PFT), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to evaluate BMD values of the lumbar and femoral regions. Results: A significant positive association was found between FEV1/FVC …
