Selective attention to facial identity and emotion in children

2008

Three age groups of participants (6–8 years, 9–11 years, adults) performed two tasks: A face recognition task and a Garner task. In the face recognition task, the participants were presented with 20 faces and then had to recognize them among 20 new faces. In the Garner tasks, the participants had to sort, as fast as possible, the photographs of two persons expressing two emotions by taking into account only one of the two dimensions (identity or emotion). When the sorting task was on one dimension, the other dimension was varied either in a correlated, a constant or an orthogonal way in distinct subsessions. The results indicated an increase in face recognition abilities. They also showed a…

Pain fingerprinting using multimodal sensing: pilot study

2021

Abstract Pain is a complex phenomenon, the experience of which varies widely across individuals. At worst, chronic pain can lead to anxiety and depression. Cost-effective strategies are urgently needed to improve the treatment of pain, and thus we propose a novel home-based pain measurement system for the longitudinal monitoring of pain experience and variation in different patients with chronic low back pain. The autonomous nervous system and audio-visual features are analyzed from heart rate signals, voice characteristics and facial expressions using a unique measurement protocol. Self-reporting is utilized for the follow-up of changes in pain intensity, induced by well-designed physical …

Kernel manifold alignment for domain adaptation

2016

The wealth of sensory data coming from different modalities has opened numerous opportu- nities for data analysis. The data are of increasing volume, complexity and dimensionality, thus calling for new methodological innovations towards multimodal data processing. How- ever, multimodal architectures must rely on models able to adapt to changes in the data dis- tribution. Differences in the density functions can be due to changes in acquisition conditions (pose, illumination), sensors characteristics (number of channels, resolution) or different views (e.g. street level vs. aerial views of a same building). We call these different acquisition modes domains, and refer to the adaptation proble…

Background Coping plays an important role for emotion regulation in threatening situations. The model of coping modes designates repression and sensitization as two independent coping styles. Repression consists of strategies that shield the individual from arousal. Sensitization indicates increased analysis of the environment in order to reduce uncertainty. According to the discontinuity hypothesis, repressors are sensitive to threat in the early stages of information processing. While repressors do not exhibit memory disturbances early on, they manifest weak memory for these stimuli later. This study investigates the discontinuity hypothesis using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fM…

Facial geometry and speech analysis for depression detection.

2017

Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders, burdening many people world-wide. A system with the potential of serving as a decision support system is proposed, based on novel features extracted from facial expression geometry and speech, by interpreting non-verbal manifestations of depression. The proposed system has been tested both in gender independent and gender based modes, and with different fusion methods. The algorithms were evaluated for several combinations of parameters and classification schemes, on the dataset provided by the Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge of 2013 and 2014. The proposed framework achieved a precision of 94.8% for detecting persons achieving high sc…

Is pain sensitivity altered in people with Alzheimer's disease? A systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental pain research

2016

Background Clinical studies suggest people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have altered pain sensitivity. Experimental pain research is equivocal. Objective Conduct a meta-analysis to investigate if people with AD have altered pain sensitivity compared to healthy controls (HCs). Methods Three authors searched electronic databases from inception till November 2015 for experimental pain studies in AD vs. HCs. Outcome measures were pain threshold, tolerance, pain ratings, heart rate response to noxious stimuli and the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). Random effect meta-analysis calculating Hedges' g ± 95% confidence intervals (CI) was conducted. Results Thirteen studies were identified, inclu…

Decreased intersubject synchrony in dynamic valence ratings of sad movie contents in dysphoric individuals

2021

Emotional reactions to movies are typically similar between people. However, depressive symptoms decrease synchrony in brain responses. Less is known about the effect of depressive symptoms on intersubject synchrony in conscious stimulus-related processing. In this study, we presented amusing, sad and fearful movie clips to dysphoric individuals (those with elevated depressive symptoms) and control participants to dynamically rate the clips’ valences (positive vs. negative). We analysed both the valence ratings’ mean values and intersubject correlation (ISC). We used electrodermal activity (EDA) to complement the measurement in a separate session. There were no group differences in either t…

Eigenexpressions: Emotion Recognition Using Multiple Eigenspaces

2013

This paper presents an appearance-based holistic method for expression recognition. A two stage supervised learning approach is used. At the first stage, training images are used to compute one subspace per expression. At the second stage, the same images are used to train a classifier. In this step, Euclidean distances from each image to each particular subspace are used as the input to the classifier. The resulting system significantly outperforms the baseline eigenfaces method on the Cohn-Kanade data set, with performance gains in the range 10%-20%.

Boosting Hankel matrices for face emotion recognition and pain detection

2017

HighligthsDynamics of face expression descriptors are modeled for emotion recognition.A set of Hankel matrices is built upon several multi-scale face representations.Boosting and random subspace projection are used for dynamics selection.Dynamics of Haar-like features and Gabor Energies are compared.Fine-grained dynamics of subtle expressions can be modeled at small spatial scales. Studies in psychology have shown that the dynamics of emotional expressions play an important role in face emotion recognition in humans. Motivated by these studies, in this paper the dynamics of face expressions are modeled and used for automatic emotion recognition and pain detection.Given a temporal sequence o…

Impact of repeating somatic cues on the depth of experiencing for withdrawers and pursuers in emotionally focused couple therapy

2021

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, an experiential modality, views emotion central to therapeutic change. In this exploratory study, we examined therapists' repetition of somatically focused interventions (therapist verbalizing somatic cues, such as facial expressions) and their impact on clients' emotional experiencing in-session. We also assessed difference for withdrawing versus pursuing partners. The sample included 13 EFT therapists who worked with one couple each for a single session. From transcripts we coded therapists' repetition of somatically focused interventions and clients' depth of experiencing pre-and post-intervention. Multilevel modeling demonstrated that a higher number …
