Risk of Death Associated With Intravitreal Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Therapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
2020
Importance Although intravitreal anti–vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment represents the first-line therapy for many retinal diseases, the issue of their systemic safety is debatable. Objectives To assess whether intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy might be associated with increased risk of mortality and which variables are associated with the increase. Data Sources PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase databases, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were systematically searched from inception to May 6, 2019. Study Selection Randomized clinical trials comparing intravitreal anti-VEGF treatment with control groups and with follow-up of at least 6 months were selected. Data Extractio…
Topological virtual screening: a way to find new anticonvulsant drugs from chemical diversity.
2003
A topological virtual screening (tvs) test is presented, which is capable of identifying new drug leaders with anticonvulsant activity. Molecular structures of both anticonvulsant-active and non active compounds, extracted from the Merck Index database, were represented using topological indexes. By means of the application of a linear discriminant analysis to both sets of structures, a topological anticonvulsant model (tam) was obtained, which defines a connectivity function. On the basis of this model, 41 new structures with anticonvulsant activity have been identified by a topological virtual screening.
GreekLex 2: A comprehensive lexical database with part-of-speech, syllabic, phonological, and stress information
2017
Databases containing lexical properties on any given orthography are crucial for psycholinguistic research. In the last ten years, a number of lexical databases have been developed for Greek. However, these lack important part-of-speech information. Furthermore, the need for alternative procedures for calculating syllabic measurements and stress information, as well as combination of several metrics to investigate linguistic properties of the Greek language are highlighted. To address these issues, we present a new extensive lexical database of Modern Greek (GreekLex 2) with part-of-speech information for each word and accurate syllabification and orthographic information predictive of stre…
F.A. Wolf, la scienza dell’antichità e noi: come possiamo uscire dal XIX secolo?
2011
International audience; Wolf’s historical-philological Altertumswissenschaft was an academic knowlegde helpful to the State because of its space and time limits, its methods and rhetoric, his idea of the Ancients as a mirror of modern ideals. The present crisis of this paradigm can be related to State’s decline and to modern globalisation, then to the development of fragmented research fields. This development isolated scholars from society and strengthened the problem of the meaning of studies. We can find a possible meaning of these studies for example: 1) by writing the history of the non-violent fights, 2) by trying the counterfactual history or the countertextual writing, examining the…
Causal Models for Monitoring University Ordinary Financing Fund
2012
Recently iterated decreasing government transfers and an increasing proportion of budget allotted basing on competitive performances, took Italian Universities started struggling with competition for funds, in particular for the University Ordinary Financing Fund (FFO). Aim of this paper is monitoring variables responsible for FFO indicators, where monitoring means: describing, analysing retrospectively, predicting and intervening on variables responsible for indicators. All this aims can be achieved by statistical techniques that should be theoretically equipped with the distinction between predicting under observation and predicting under intervention, in order to provide correct answers …

Knowledge-building patterns in educational dialogue
2017
This study aimed to examine knowledge-building patterns in Grade 6 educational dialogues. The data consisted of 20 video-recorded lessons from the classes taught by seven teachers, selected by using a latent profile analysis and examined with a qualitative functional analysis of classroom talk. Episodes of educational dialogue were found to represent three main types of knowledge, based on facts, views and experiences. These three types were further identified as forming six diverse knowledge-building patterns in educational dialogues. The findings indicated that factual orientation dominated the Grade 6 lesson dialogues. However, factual knowledge building often occurred with the other two…
Interpreting the decomposition of gender earnings gap
2010
In this paper we discuss a decomposition of the gender monthly earnings differential into three components: the first is due to differences in individual characteristics, the second is due to discrimination and the last to the differential in hours worked. The Oaxaca-Blinder hourly wage decomposition is perfectly integrated into the decomposition of the monthly earnings gap. In order to evaluate the effects of this components on the monthly earnings gap, we calculate counterfactual earnings gaps, estimating what would happen if various aspects relating to the two genders were equal (for example, educational level), and then we compare these with the empirical earnings gap. The aim of the co…
Multimodal discourse strategies of factuality and subjectivity in educational digital storytelling
2012
As new technologies continue to emerge, students and lecturers are provided with new educational tools. One such tool, which is increasingly used in higher education, is digital storytelling, i.e. multi-media digital narratives. Despite the increasing attention that education and media scholars have paid to digital storytelling, there is scant research examining digital narratives from a discourseanalytic perspective. This paper addresses this gap in the literature and, in line with the belief that individuals make meaning through a range of semiotic devices, including, among others, language, sound, graphics and text, it aims to examine discourse strategies of factuality and subjectivity i…
MATERIAL DEPRIVATION AMONG FOREIGNERS IN ITALY
2014
In all European countries, migrant populations tend to have worse living conditions than native; this is particularly true for those born outside the EU. This paper proposes a new way to look at the relative living conditions of foreigners by looking at non-monetary (or ‘direct’) indicators of material deprivation in Italy-a country characterized by the presence of a wide range of nationalities. To examine differences in economic integration of foreigners, the paper documents deprivation differentials across groups of foreigners. In particular, we measure differences in material deprivation between groups of foreigners once we control for the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of…
