The mid-eighteenth century witnessed discernible interest in religious objects excluded from the cult and emphasis was placed on the evangelisation role of church museums, which, interested in the fate of useless artworks removed from church interiors, collected, stored, and conserved them as well as rendered them available to society. This article focuses on the religious movement of the Ahmadiyya and its civil society organization, Humanity First, in West-Africa and in Europe. Particular attention is paid to the place of converts within these two institutions. Conversions to an Islamic minority and the actions of this minority are studied through the prism of social commitment. I examine the intersections between religious values, the ideas of solidarity in the societies under scrutiny and, the kaleidoscopic range of Muslim charities. This article sheds light on a set of religious literacy practices which have so far received very little scientific attention, namely ‘quranic app practices’. Quranic app practices are conceptualized as ways of engaging with the Quran through religious apps on smartphones or tablets. The article is based primarily on an explorative group interview with four young people from a Year 8 class in a multilingual lower secondary school in Denmark. This chapter takes as its starting point controversies surrounding the concept and policy ‘agenda’ associated with community cohesion, a concept first voiced in the official reports into the riots in Oldham, Burnley and Bradford in May–July 2001. The essay deals with the issue of « contractual justice » in light of European private law. The author reports the extreme variety of problems brought under the formula « contractual justice » and tries to propose a definition of the notion, restricting it to the legal institutions that allow for judicial review of the contractual relationship, in view of its rebalancing. The most intricate issue concerns the conditions under which these forms of intervention, moreover very heterogeneous, can be accomplished. The paper analyzes the main opinions that range from the concepts of procedural justice to that of substantive justice, proposing a reading that goes beyond the procedural conceptions.

Faith-based development of World Vision Tanzania

This article examines how faith is intertwined in conceptions of development in the work of World Vision Tanzania, a faith-based organisation focusing on child welfare. Issues that are explored include the question how an apparently common faith setting constitutes and provides a source of social meanings and values for the assessment of human development as well as secular development concepts such as human agency and empowerment. The analysis shows how World Vision staff assign different values to Christian and non-Christian development when assessing the potential and achievements of the beneficiaries in terms of secular concepts.
