Nurturing, breadwinning, and upbringing: paternal responsibilities by Finnish men in early fatherhood

2014

In the Nordic countries, including Finland, gender-balanced distribution of childcare is both the goal of family policies and nowadays also a cultural norm of parenting. Thus, in most families, the father, along with the mother, plays a considerable role in handson care. This study captures and analyzes paternal responsibilities as narrated by Finnish fathers. It draws on 32 interviews with 16 fathers conducted during the first three years of their fatherhood, and applies the method of narrative inquiry, in which narratives are understood as constructors of knowledge. The analysis yielded nurturing, breadwinning and upbringing, framed by the levels of everyday duties and comprehensive commi…

Maternal and paternal feeding practices: links with child eating behaviors and effects of couples' concordant/discordant practices

2021

International audience; Past research has mainly focused on mothers' feeding practices. This study aimed to study (1) gender differences in parental feeding practices, and (2) the impact of couples' concordant/discordant food parenting practices on child eating behaviors. To do so, both parents of 105 French children aged 2.01-6.51 years (51.4% boys, Mage= 3.88 years, SD=1.40) filled in a survey with items from validated questionnaires. Results showed that fathers and mothers had similar perceptions about their child's eating behaviors (Pearson correlations between 0.34 and 0.78; M=0.60), despite fathers taking significantly fewer meals with their child than mothers. Fathers reported using …

La question du père et du fils dans l'autofiction (S. Doubrosky, A. Robbe-Grillet, H. Guibert)

2012

This thesis will study the construction of fantasy in autofictional writing from a psychoanalytical perspective, focusing on Serge Doubrovsky’s Fils, Alain Robbe-Grillet’s Le Miroir qui revient and Hervé Guibert’s A l’ami qui ne m’a pas sauvé la vie. Taking up a phrase by Alain Robbe-Grillet’s, this study will rely on two different axes to inform autofictional discourse: firstly, the autobiography writer is bent on “creating an own statue of himself” while, on the other hand, the autofiction writer sets out to “project an image out of himself”, as it were. Gradually, there emerges the teenage imaginary construction of a son caught up in his aporias when faced with the analyst-father of the …

L'abolitionnisme de Victor Schoelcher, un humanisme mâtiné de colonialisme et de moralisme

1999

Although this title might be somewhat provocative, there is no intent to be anti-schoelcherist. The aim is not to diminish Victor Schoelcher's considerable achievements, but to fight against the unanimous preconceptions that have transformed this man into a myth. By studying the legal and political consequences of his proposals and his engagements, we have underlined not only the extent and complexity of his work for the Republic - that has been little known up to now, though Schoelcher ought to be considered to be one of the fathers of the Republic - but his contradictions too. Schoelcher was so sure of the virtues of the republican values of the mother country, that his fight, albeit huma…

Demographic variables and fathers’ involvement with their child with disabilities

2013

The main purpose of this study is to examine whether fathers’ involvement with their child with disabilities is correlated with some of the demographic variables. Data were collected from 243 Polish fathers who were married and who had at least one child with disabilities. The issue was assessed by two measures: a Questionnaire and the Father Involvement Scale. The results of the multiple regression show that fathers’ involvement is significantly (P < 0.05) correlated with the level of fathers’ concentration on the needs of their child with disabilities, the level of fathers’ cooperation with their wives, the number of years during which parents cared for a child with disabilities, time dev…

Samotni ojcowie w percepcji dzieci

2019

Zagadnienie samotnego ojcostwa stanowi jeden z bardziej interesujących, aczkolwiek nadal mało zgłębionych, obszarów badań nad rodziną i rodzicielstwem.
