Soil and pedomesofauna relationships under different forests on a western slope of Etna Volcano
2015
Although the pedofauna influences the processes of pedogenesis and has an important role in the main functional properties of the soil, it has rarely been used as a key-element in defining soil quality. As has been stressed, this is due to the fact that the utility of pedofauna as a soil quality indicator is a function of the definition of soil quality which, in turn, depends on different functions, both biotic and abiotic, performed by the soil. If we consider the biological functions of vegetal, animal and microbiotic activity, the usefulness of the pedofauna, as a diagnostic element of soil quality, reaches its maximum since it is one of the indicators of the biodiversity. Assessment of the environmental quality of the Sicilian coast through a phytoecological and biogeographic analysis
2017
Large-scale habitat measurements have been aided greatly by advances in remote sensing and GIS software. However, the degree of resolution of this technique is still inadequate for many purposes, such as detail monitoring of many habitats that occur on the coast (e.g. temporary Mediterranean pools or ephemeral therophytic grasslands). Lists and distribution mapping of taxa are probably the most commonly used surrogate for overall biodiversity at both local and broader scales. For the Sicilian coasts a complete study, dating back more than 25 years ago and based on a multidisciplinary approach of flora, vegetation and fauna, exists (Raimondo & al. 1990. Quad. Bot. Amb. Appl. 1: 131-182).…
Contribution to the knowledge of Tunisian amphibians: notes on distribution, habitat features and breeding phenology
2009
In order to improve the knowledge on amphibian fauna in Tunisia, about 300 water bodies belonging to different habitat typologies were sampled during the period 2004-2008. At the sites where amphibians were observed, we recorded the UTM coordinates, the altitude, and the following environmental features: habitat typology, hydroperiod, electric conductivity, temperature, water turbidity, and macrophyte coverage. The presence of the seven species currently known with certainty for Tunisia has been confirmed: Pleurodeles nebulosus, Discoglossus pictus, Bufo bufo, B. mauritanicus, B. boulengeri, Hyla meridionalis and Pelophylax saharicus. Conversely, no evidence on the occurrence of Salamandra …
The microcrustacean fauna of Sicily and the Central Mediterranean Sea area - Current knowledge and gaps to be filled
2006
The current knowledge of freshwater entomostracans from Sicily and some neighbouring central-Mediterranean countries is briefly reviewed. Data concerning different countries and different taxonomical groups are markedly inhomogeneous and often far from being representative of the real biota of the corresponding countries. This gap prevents a sound biogeographical analysis of the freshwater microcrustacean fauna of the area. The major gaps that have to be filled are highlighted and the need for more surveys and monitoring is emphasised.
2011
A check-list of Sicilian terrestrial mammals from Late Glacial to the Holocene has been compiled and a quantitative methodology of data analysis to calculate their occurrence and extinction rates has been adopted, in order to synthesize the temporal turnover of mammal species occurred during the last 17,5 ky. In such interval Sicily, probably passed from a fully connection (via a temporary land bridge generated by eustatic change of sea level) with Southern Calabria to the present isolation phase. To better focus the faunal turnover, this temporal interval has been subdivided into three phases: Late Glacial, ancient and recent Holocene. 28 Mammal taxa were recorded: 17 in the Late Glacial, …
