Nitrate-induced coronary vasodilation by stress-magnetic resonance imaging: A novel noninvasive test of coronary vasomotion
2004
Purpose To evaluate the feasibility of assessing coronary vasodilation following exogenous nitrates, using magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). The assessment of coronary response to exogenous nitrovasodilators may have a diagnostic and prognostic impact in patients with coronary artery disease. To date, stress imaging of coronary artery vasomotion has been confined to the catheterization laboratory. MRA is emerging as a noninvasive tool for coronary artery imaging. Materials and Methods Coronary MRA was performed in 20 healthy volunteers (12 males, age = 33 ± 8). We used spiral spoiled gradient echo (SSGE) sequences for imaging of coronary artery lumen. After the baseline short-axis view …
Nocebo hyperalgesia induced by implicit conditioning.
2019
abstract Background and objectives Nocebo hyperalgesia (i.e., increased pain sensitivity based on expectations) can be induced by conditioning, but is supposed to be mediated by conscious expectation. Although recent evidence points to the feasibility of subliminal conditioning of nocebo hyperalgesia with masked faces, face processing might be a special case and the practical implications of subliminal conditioning remain questionable. This study aimed to implicitly condition nocebo hyperalgesia using supraliminal cues. Methods Implicit differential nocebo conditioning (N = 48 healthy participants) was implemented by coupling high and low painful electric stimuli to varying visual stimuli t…
Home therapy for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in cancer patients
2005
Outpatient treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) has become a common practice in uncomplicated patients. Few data are still present in patients with comorbidity (such as cancer) or concomitant symptomatic pulmonary embolism. Cancer patients with DVT are often excluded from home treatment because they have a higher risk of both bleeding and recurrent DVT. We tested the feasibility and safety of the Home Treatment (HT) program for acute DVT a PE in cancer patients. Patients were treated as outpatients unless they required admission for other medical problems, were actively bleeding or had pain that requires parenteral narcotics. Outpatient treatment was with low molecular weight heparin (LM…
T2-mapping of the sacroiliac joints at 1.5 Tesla: a feasibility and reproducibility study
2018
Objective: To evaluate the reproducibility of T2 relaxation time measurements of the sacroiliac joints at 1.5 T. Materials and methods: Healthy volunteers underwent an oblique axial multislice multiecho spin-echo sequence of the sacroiliac joints at 1.5 T. Regions of interest were manually drawn using a dedicated software by two musculoskeletal radiologists to include the cartilaginous part of the sacroiliac joints. A senior radiologist performed the measurement twice, while a resident measured once. Intra- and inter-observer reproducibility was tested using the Bland-Altman method. Association between sex and T2 relaxation times was tested using the Mann-Whitney U test. Correlation between…
Feasibility and psychometric properties of the Finnish version of the measure of processes of care for adults
2018
To assess the psychometric properties and feasibility of the Finnish translation of the measure of processes of care for adults (MPOC-A) when used in an inpatient rehabilitation setting.A feasibility study.Inpatient rehabilitation settings.A total of 858 people with severe neurological disabilities, musculoskeletal problems, and mental disorders were recruited to the study. The MPOC-A questionnaire is a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 34 items in five-factorial domains. The construct validity of the translated questionnaire was evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis. To compare the fit of the model to the fit of the independent null-model Comparative Fit Index was used. I…
Sustained Complete Molecular Remissions After Treatment With Imatinib-Mesylate in Patients With Failure After Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation fo…
2005
Purpose In the era of molecular therapy of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) applying BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors, the usefulness of molecular end points, in particular, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for BCR-ABL in monitoring responses has been broadly accepted. Therefore, we have designed a prospective phase II trial in CML, which, for the first time, evaluated the feasibility and safety of molecular end points as surrogate markers to guide through a stratified treatment algorithm within a multicenter trial. Patients and Methods As a clinical model, we adopted minimal residual disease (MRD) found in relapse after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) in CML. For…
Flapless application of enamel matrix derivative in periodontal retreatment: A multicentre randomized feasibility trial
2021
AIM To investigate the potential benefit of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) as adjunct to re-instrumentation of residual pockets persisting after steps 1 and 2 of periodontal therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS 44 adult patients participated in a multicentre feasibility randomized clinical trial with split-mouth design. They had presented at re-evaluation after initial non-surgical periodontal therapy (steps 1 and 2 of periodontal therapy) for generalized periodontitis with at least 2 teeth with residual probing pocket depths (PPD) ≥5 and ≤8 mm, with bleeding on probing (BOP). Two teeth with similar PPD were randomized to receive re-instrumentation either with (test) or without (control) adjunctiv…
Laparoscopic Radical Hysterectomy After Concomitant Chemoradiation in Locally Advanced Cervical Cancer: A Prospective Phase II Study
2015
Abstract Study Objective To assess the feasibility of total robotic radical surgery (TRRS) in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) who receive chemoradiation therapy (CT/RT). Design A prospective (preplanned) study of a nonrandomized controlled trial (Canadian Task Force classification level 2). Setting Catholic University of the Sacred Hearth, Rome, Italy. Patients Between September 2013 and January 2016, a total of 40 patients with LACC (Federation Internationale de Gynecologie et d'Obstetrique stage IB2–III) were enrolled in the study. Interventions Robotic radical hysterectomy (RRH) plus pelvic and/or aortic lymphadenectomy was attempted within 6 weeks after CT/RT. The …
Extradural Endoscopic Dissection of the Anterior Skull Base
1998
A study was conducted from February 29, 1996, to March 28, 1996, at the University of Brno's Pathology Institute in the Czech Republic to explore the possible application of craniofacial intracranial endoscopic techniques through minimal skin incisions and trephines in fresh cadavers (3 to 12 hours old). Through the trephines the dura was totally dissected from the bone. After this dissection a standard bicoronal incision and a full craniotomy was performed to assess the integrity of the meninges. This minimally invasive dissection of the skull base with the aid of an endoscope is characterized by fewer skin incisions, thereby avoiding the exposure of subcutaneous tissue, muscle, cranial bo…
Laparoscopic Splenectomy for Secondary Cytoreduction in Ovarian Cancer Patients With Localized Spleen Recurrence: Feasibility and Technique
2016
Abstract Study Objective To investigate the feasibility of laparoscopic splenectomy in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer with isolated spleen metastasis. Design (Canadian Task Force classification III). Setting Tertiary referral centre in Rome, Italy. Patients Eight women with an isolated platinum-sensitive splenic relapse of ovarian cancer. Intervention Between February 2013 and May 2015, 8 women with an isolated platinum-sensitive splenic relapse of ovarian cancer were submitted to laparoscopic splenectomy. Measurements and Main Results All patients underwent laparoscopic splenectomy without conversion to an open approach. The median estimated intraoperative blood loss was 100 mL (ra…
