Enterococcal meningitis caused by Enterococcus casseliflavus. First case report
2005
Abstract Background Enterococcal meningitis is an uncommon disease usually caused by Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium and is associated with a high mortality rate. Enterococcus casseliflavus has been implicated in a wide variety of infections in humans, but never in meningitis. Case presentation A 77-year-old Italian female presented for evaluation of fever, stupor, diarrhea and vomiting of 3 days duration. There was no history of head injury nor of previous surgical procedures. She had been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for 30 years, for which she was being treated with steroids and methotrexate. On admission, she was febrile, alert but not oriented to time and place. H…
Array CGH defined interstitial deletion on chromosome 14: a new case
2009
Interstitial deletions of the long arm of chromosome 14 are relatively rare. We report a 8.5-year-old girl with dysmorphic facial features and mental retardation associated with a de novo interstitial deletion of chromosome 14. The comparison between our patient and all published patients is reviewed. The genetic investigations have allowed us to define the critical chromosomal region and to start an accurate follow-up.
A multimodal retina-iris biometric system using the Levenshtein distance for spatial feature comparison
2020
Abstract The recent developments of information technologies, and the consequent need for access to distributed services and resources, require robust and reliable authentication systems. Biometric systems can guarantee high levels of security and multimodal techniques, which combine two or more biometric traits, warranting constraints that are more stringent during the access phases. This work proposes a novel multimodal biometric system based on iris and retina combination in the spatial domain. The proposed solution follows the alignment and recognition approach commonly adopted in computational linguistics and bioinformatics; in particular, features are extracted separately for iris and…
Atypical Antipsychotics in the Treatment of Acute Bipolar Depression with Mixed Features: A Systematic Review and Exploratory Meta-Analysis of Placeb…
2016
Evidence supporting the use of second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) in the treatment of acute depression with mixed features (MFs) associated with bipolar disorder (BD) is scarce and equivocal. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and preliminary meta-analysis investigating SGAs in the treatment of acute BD depression with MFs. Two authors independently searched major electronic databases from 1990 until September 2015 for randomized (placebo-) controlled trials (RCTs) or open-label clinical trials investigating the efficacy of SGAs in the treatment of acute bipolar depression with MFs. A random-effect meta-analysis calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) between SGA an…

A Case of Follicular Tumor of Uncertain Malignant Potential (FT-UMP) with Glomeruloid Features Showing Capsular Mucinous Degeneration
2021
The most recent revision of the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours of Endocrine Organs introduced a new variant of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC). It is characterized by a “glomeruloid” architectural pattern of growth. We present a case of follicular tumor with glomeruloid features, with Alcian Blue positive mucinous stromal degeneration in foci of questionable capsular microinvasion. At our knowledge, this the second case of glomeruloid follicular tumor in the literature and the first case in which Alcian Blue staining was used to investigate capsular invasion. Moreover, RAS mutation further supports that this is a variant of follicular tumor with uncertain malig…
Analysis of health communication texts: UK press coverage of debates about assisted dying
2015
Conventionally, social researchers analyse media messages by reading text and coding it. This is time consuming and restricts many studies to small samples. Nowadays very large amounts of text are available in electronic form, offering potential insights into the health messages they contain, but which appear daunting to the analyst with limited resources using conventional methods. I explain and illustrate methods for the computer-assisted analysis of media texts, using specialised software (Wordsmith Tools and Wordstat). These allow the analyst to provide a statistical overview of the key features of texts, to compare them (looking at change over time, for example) and to select illustrat…
"Kaikki haluu olla kingei mut kuka kruunataan" : the linguistic features of English in the Finnish rap artist Cheek's lyrics
2017
Englannin kielen rooli ja vaikutus on suuri useilla eri elämänalueilla tämän päivän Suomessa. Englantia käytetään laajasti esimerkiksi yritysten yhteisenä kielenä sekä median eri osa-alueilla. Englantia pidetään yleisesti modernina ja helposti lähestyttävänä kielenä, jonka osaaminen katsotaan nykyään ennemmin vaatimukseksi kuin lisäeduksi. Cheek on suurta suosiota saavuttanut suomalainen rap-artisti. Vaikka Cheekin pääasiallinen esiintymiskieli on suomi, kä…
The expanding role of LC-MS in analyzing metabolites and degradation products of food contaminants
2008
Abstract Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) has contributed significantly in advancing research in the analysis of metabolites and degradation products of food contaminants. Of particular interest is the comprehensive application of LC-MS to discovery of degradation products and metabolites. This review, covering research published between 2003 and 2008, describes how LC-MS has been used in this field, with the majority of work dealing with target-metabolite analysis and only a small fraction using LC-MS comprehensively. In considering the significance of this topic and the potential interest in it, we briefly describe state-of-the art mass analyzers applied for it (QtrAP, QqTO…
Stationary phase modulation in liquid chromatography through the serial coupling of columns: A review
2016
Liquid chromatography with single columns often does not succeed in the analysis of complex samples, in terms of resolution and analysis time. A relatively simple solution to enhance chromatographic resolution is the modulation of the stationary phase through the serial coupling of columns. This can be implemented with any type of column using compatible elution conditions and conventional instruments. This review describes the key features of column coupling and published procedures, where two or more columns were coupled in series to solve separation problems. In all reports, the authors could not resolve their samples with single columns, whereas significant enhancement in chromatographi…
