Effect of diet composition on acid–base balance in adolescents, young adults and elderly at rest and during exercise

Diets rich in animal protein and cereal grains and deficient in vegetables and fruits may cause low-grade metabolic acidosis, which may impact exercise and health. Dietary intake and food pattern among university students

Dietary intake and food pattern were determined among university students. Nine hundred-eighteen students (384 males and 534 females) completed a 24 hour recall and a questionnaire. This study showed an average energy intake of 10.3 and 8.0 MJ among male and female university students. The mean intakes of energy and magnesium for males and energy, iron, magnesium and zinc for females were lower to the Spanish Recommended Intakes. For males, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks bring about 18, 33, 25 and 27% of total dairy energy, respectively, however, for females a 15, 34, 23 and 27% of total dairy energy were obtained for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, respectively. Objective: To investigate associations of family-related factors with children's breakfast consumption and BMI-z-score and to examine whether children's breakfast consumption mediates associations between family-related factors and children's BMI-z-score. Number of meals eaten in relation to weight status among Norwegian adolescents.

Aim: To assess the relationship between number of meals eaten and weight status, and to assess potential confounders of this relationship. Methods: A total of 2870 (participation rate: 85%) 9th and 10th graders (mean age: 15.5 years) at 33 schools completed questionnaires in May 2005. Number of meals was measured with questions asking whether they ate breakfast, lunch, dinner, and supper the day before, giving a scale ranging from zero to four meals/day. One of several factors that might affect academic performance is the diet. The school nutrition environment and its association with soft drink intakes in seven countries across Europe - the ENERGY project

The school is an important setting for promoting healthy eating especially at the transition from childhood to adolescence. This study contributes to the literature by describing practices within physical, political and sociocultural aspects of the school nutrition environment in seven countries across Europe based on questionnaires to the school management, and exploring their associations with soft drink consumption reported on questionnaires by 10-12 year olds. Eight-year trends in food, energy and macronutrient intake in a sample of elderly German subjects.

Time trends in the food and the corresponding energy and macronutrient intake between 1994 and 2002 are investigated as part of the longitudinal study on nutrition and health status in an ageing population in Giessen, Germany (GISELA study). The dietary intake is assessed via a 3 d estimated dietary record especially developed and validated for this study. A total of 2135 records from 532 subjects, aged 60 years and over, are analysed separately according to sex and age groups (born 1904–1928 and born 1929–1942).
