Estrogen receptor alpha polymorphism modifies the association between childhood exercise and bone mass: follow-up study.

2007

This follow-up study confirms our previous findings that the ER-α PvuII polymorphism (Pp) modulates the association between exercise and bone mass. The differences in bone properties of girls with consistently low physical activity (LLPA) and consistently high physical activity (HHPA) were evident only in those bearing the heterozygote ER-α genotype (Pp). In particular, areal bone mineral density of the total femur, bone mineral content and areal bone mineral density of the femoral neck, and bone mineral content and cortical thickness of the tibia shaft were significantly (p < .05) lower in the Pp girls with LLPA than in their HHPA counterparts. These findings might partly explain the ge…

Effect of alendronate and exercise on bone and physical performance of postmenopausal women: a randomized controlled trial.

2003

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 12-month trial we evaluated effects of weight- bearing jumping exercise and oral alendronate, alone or in combination, on the mass and structure of bone, risk factors for falling (muscle strength and power, postural sway, and dynamic balance), and cardiorespiratory fitness in postmenopausal women. A total of 164 healthy, sedentary, early postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to one of four experimental groups: (1) 5 mg of alendronate daily plus progressive jumping exercise, (2) 5 mg alendronate, (3) placebo plus progressive jumping exercise, or (4) placebo. The primary endpoint was 12-month change in bone mass and geometry (measured…

The population-based prevalence of osteoporotic vertebral fracture and densitometric osteoporosis in postmenopausal women over 50 in Valencia, Spain …

2010

Purpose: To estimate the prevalence of vertebral fracture and densitometric osteoporosis in postmenopausal women over the age of 50 in Valencia, Spain. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2006-2007. An age-stratified population-based random sample of 824 postmenopausal women over the age of 50 answered a questionnaire and received a densitometric examination of the lumbar spine and hip with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and a lateral X-ray of the thoracic spine and lumbar regions. Osteoporosis was defined as a T-score less than or equal to -2.5 compared to a population of young women, and the presence of vertebral fractures was classified according to Genant's semiquanti…

Endovascular Treatment of Superficial Femoral and Proximal Popliteal Arteries Lesions

2019

Abstract Mechanical stress due to flexion-extension in the femoropopliteal space may cause stent failure via stent fracture and thrombosis. Wire-Interwoven self-expanding Nitinol Stents design partially mimics the reticular structure of native vessels, emphasizing radial strength, flexibility and kink resistance; these stent features can offer more chances for short and long term patency. We have evaluated 5 patients with peripheral artery disease with significant superficial femoral artery or proximal popliteal artery lesions. All patients underwent endovascular therapy with Wire-Interwoven self-expanding Nitinol Stents, with primary focus on stent patency at follow-up visits (1, 6, 12 mon…

Radiologische Veränderungen nach Implantation zweier unterschiedlicher zementfreier Hüftschaftsysteme

1997

PURPOSE: Of the study was to evaluate radiological alterations of the femoral bone after implantation of two different prostheses. METHODS: 81 patients with 87 hips underwent total hip arthroplasty by using the Zweymuller-stem fixating in the medullary canal, and 175 patients with 182 ABG-stems with a proximally fixating, anatomical design were followed up clinically and radiologically. RESULTS: Adaptive bone remodelling in Zweymuller-stems showed in some patients thickening of the cortex of the femur and proximal bone-stock loss; reactive lines were seen in the proximal areas surrounding the prosthesis. Radiographs of patients with ABG-stems showed these lines in the distal, smooth part of…

Effect of 2 years of endurance and high-impact training on preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women: randomized clinical trial.

2018

The aim of the study was to analyze the effects of endurance and high-impact training oriented toward preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with calcium and vitamin D supplementation. This study was a randomized clinical trial. Thirty-six postmenopausal women were randomized to the control and experimental groups. Thirty-four women completed the 2-year interventions. The control group training involved walking at an intense pace. The experimental group conducted high-impact training specifically oriented to prevent osteoporosis. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was used to estimate the T-scores of the lumbar spine and femoral neck. The fast-walking group showed constant T-scores in …

Callus distraction of the femur and tibia. Experience with the Monofixator - indications for reosteosynthesis

1998

In a 4-year period, 18 patients underwent callus distraction of the femur or tibia with the use of a unilateral external fixator. Twelve patients had post-traumatic bone loss resulting from complex lower-limb fractures. The bony defect was located in the tibia in 11 cases and in the femur in one case. All patients had major associated soft-tissue lesions. The length of the bony defect averaged 6.25 cm. Eight fractures were infected at the beginning of treatment. Six other patients underwent callus distraction for reasons of limb shortening. Five femora and one tibia were lengthened. The average increase in length was 6.5 cm. There were no fixator-related complications during distraction. Th…

Effects of diet-induced obesity and voluntary wheel running on the microstructure of the murine distal femur

2011

Abstract Background Obesity and osteoporosis, two possibly related conditions, are rapidly expanding health concerns in modern society. Both of them are associated with sedentary life style and nutrition. To investigate the effects of diet-induced obesity and voluntary physical activity we used high resolution micro-computed tomography (μCT) together with peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) to examine the microstructure of the distal femoral metaphysis in mice. Methods Forty 7-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were assigned to 4 groups: control (C), control + running (CR), high-fat diet (HF), and high-fat diet + running (HFR). After a 21-week intervention, all the mice were sacrifi…

Proximale Verankerung von Hüft-Endoprothesen mit poröser Oberfläche: 6-Jahres-Ergebnisse

2008

PROBLEM The anatomically shaped pcl (ESKA) total hip replacement has a porous coating of the proximal stem and the cup to allow for bony ingrowth. The tip of the stem is polished. METHOD We report the results of 96 THR 6.2 years (5.25-6.7) after implantation. RESULTS There were no revisions during this period. One stem showed radiographic loosening at follow-up. There was stress-shielding in 9.4% in contrast to the concept of proximal fixation. Thigh-pain was found in 9.4%. One patient demonstrated disabling thigh-pain despite radiologic bony ingrowth. By drilling the femur distal to the tip of the stem a remarkable relief was achieved. CONCLUSION Despite numerous cases of stress-shielding …

Medicated hydrogels of hyaluronic acid derivatives for use in orthopedic field.

2013

Physical hydrogels have been obtained from hyaluronic acid derivatized with polylactic acid in the presence or in the absence of polyethylene glycol chains. They have been extemporarily loaded with antibacterial agents, such as vancomycin and tobramycin. These medicated hydrogels have been used to coat titanium disks (chosen as simple model of orthopedic prosthesis) and in vitro studies in simulated physiological fluid have been performed as a function of time and for different drug loading and polymer concentration values. Sterilization process performed on the hydrogels does not change their rheological behavior and release properties as well as the chemical structure of starting copolyme…
