Did the covid-19 pandemic change hip fracture incidence in elderly?

2021

The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of the national lockdown on femoral neck fractures occurred in the elderly in an Italian city with more than 650 thousand people. We analyzed data related to patients over 65 years-old with femoral neck fractures admitted between March 9th and April 24th, 2020 to five public Hospitals in Palermo and four private Hospitals during lockdown. A total of 152 patients with hip fracture were observed with a significant reduction compared with the same period in 2017-2019. During the Lockdown period a reduction was observed of the mean age from 84.2 ±2.6 years old to 82.5±1.2 with a higher incidence in males, particularly in < 80-year-olds. The…

Histopathological and immunohistochemical aspects of bone tissue in aseptic necrosis of the femoral head

2021

Femoral head osteonecrosis, also known as avascular necrosis, is a disease with a multifactorial etiology, characterized by a profound change of bone architecture, which leads to the diminishing of bone resistance and femoral head collapse. The main causes that lead to femoral head necrosis are represented by the decrease of local blood perfusion and increase of intraosseous pressure, because of an excessive development of adipose tissue in the areolas of the trabecular bone tissue in the femoral head. The histopathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) study performed by us showed that most of bone trabeculae were damaged by necrotic-involutive processes, their sizes being reduced, both re…

A systematic review of maternal smoking during pregnancy and fetal measurements with meta-analysis

2017

Maternal smoking during pregnancy is linked to reduced birth weight but the gestation at onset of this relationship is not certain. We present a systematic review of the literature describing associations between maternal smoking during pregnancy and ultrasound measurements of fetal size, together with an accompanying meta-analysis. Studies were selected from electronic databases (OVID, EMBASE and Google Scholar) that examined associations between maternal smoking or smoke exposure and antenatal fetal ultrasound measurements. Outcome measures were first, second or third trimester fetal measurements. There were 284 abstracts identified, 16 papers were included in the review and the meta-anal…

Ultrasonic mensuration of fetal limb bones in the second and third trimesters

1987

Growth of fetal limb bones has been examined in a prospective cross-sectional study in 530 patients between 13 and 42 weeks of gestation by ultrasound. The length of the femur, tibia, humerus, and radius were measured in all cases, and fibula and ulna in 393 cases. For each week of gestation mean lengths (+/- 2 standard deviations) were calculated. All limb bones showed linear growth from 13 weeks to 25 weeks of gestation, after which the growth curve appeared nonlinear. A strong linear relationship (r greater than 0.98) between the BPD and bone length was found for each bone. In five aborted fetuses, prenatal sonographic measurements of the ossified diaphyses were compared with the postnat…

Age-Related Reference Ranges for Fetal Foot Length

2000

AIM The aim of this study was to establish age-dependent reference ranges for fetal foot length with gestation as well as for the femur/foot length ratio, based on a mathematical growth model. METHOD In a prospective cross-sectional study of 610 pregnancies with sonographically confirmed gestational age (< 12 weeks' gestation), fetal biometry was performed in addition to measurements of fetal foot length between 12 and 42 completed weeks of gestation. Reference ranges for the fetal foot and for the femur/foot length ratio were constructed with an overall coverage of 90% of the measured data, using a previously established method of determining reference bands for growth parameters. RESULTS …

Mathematical modeling of fetal limb growth

1989

Using ultrasound measurements of the femur, tibia, humerus, radius (N = 515), and fibula and ulna (N = 385) from normal fetuses between 12 and 40 completed weeks of gestation, growth models were determined for each bone by computer analysis. On the basis of residual analysis, growth of fetal limb bones could best be expressed as a function of tangens hyperbolicus. Growth profiles and growth data are shown with 5th, 10th, 50th, 90th, and 95th percentiles. These results are compared with previous investigations of limb bone measurements.

Ergebnisse nach Implantation von zementfreien metallspongiösen Hüftprothesen

1994

158 Timing of Fascia Iliaca Compartment Block (FICB) for Neck of Femur (NOF) fracture in the Accident and Emergency Department (AED) and the operatin…

2021

Background and Aims FICB is recommended for NOF fracture in the AED to improve analgesia1 and as an adjuvant to anaesthesia during surgery2. Surgical repair of the fracture should be performed on the day of, or the day after, admission3. We evaluated the provision of FICB in AED and its potential to cause local anaesthetic (LA) toxicity when followed by a further block at time of surgery. Methods All patients admitted to our institution with NOF fracture during October 2019 were retrospectively screened for FICBs. We recorded the time of: admission, FICB in AED, surgery, FICB in theatre and LA dose. Data was cross-referenced and validated against National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) tables…

Periprotēžu infekcijas ārstēšanas efektivitāte pielietojot DAIR metodi TOS slimnīcā no 2015.-2019.gadam

2021
