Composition and variability of the essential oil of the flowers of Lavandula stoechas from various geographical sources
2015
Samples of flowers of wild Lavandula stoechas L. spp. stoechas populations were collected in three areas of Sicily (Italy) and were characterized in agronomic and chemical terms. Essential oil (EO) was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. GC-FID and GC-MS analyses permitted identification of 89 compounds from the EO. The samples were separated into 3 groups using PCA (Principal Component Analysis) statistical method, with reference to the chemical composition of the EO. All three Sicilian populations of lavender were identified as the fenchone chemotype with percentage content ranged between 52.8–71.1%. The population of Partinico showed the highest dry weight o…
Variations in the Volatile Compounds of a Fennel (Foeniculum VulgareMill.) Variety Grown in a Semi-Arid Mediterranean Environment
2005
Abstract Fennel is an industrial source of anethole but, recently, further interest has came from the suggested possibility of many industrial uses of this plant. The volatile substances from the seeds of Fennel grown in Sparacia (Cammarata – AG – Sicily; 37° 38’ N; 13° 46’ E) have been investigated and compared on a statistical base with previously reported data. The variety grown in Sparacia fall into the “high fenchone” chemovariety. The substances α-toluene, α-terpinene, β-phellandrene+limonene and camphene appear the components most sensitive to environment and grow condition modifications.
Multinuclear NMR study of 1,3,3-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one (fenchone) and its six monochlorinated derivatives
1990
1H, 13C and 17O NMR spectra of fenchone and six monochlorofenchones have been recorded. The second-order 1H NMR spectra were analysed by an iterative computer program. The 1H and 13C chlorine-induced substituent chemical shifts (SCS) were calculated. The vicinal coupling constants proved to be essential in the assignment of the chemical shifts of the geminal methyls. No clear correlation was observed between the chemical shifts of the carbonyl oxygen and the carbonyl carbon. All monochlorofenchones were previously unknown compounds and were synthesized for this work.
Multinuclear magnetic resonance study of 1,3,3-trimethylbicyclo [2.2.1]heptan-2-one (fenchone) oxime, its five monochloro derivatives and a dehydroch…
1991
Fenchone oxime, 5-exo-chlorofenchone oxime, 6-exo-chlorofenchone oxime, 7-anti-chlorofenchone oxime, 8-chlorofenchone oxime, 9-chlorofenchone oxime and a dehydrochlorination product of 10-chlorofenchone oxime were synthesized from fenchone and the corresponding chlorofenchones. The 1H, 13C and 17O NMR spectra of the oximes and the dehydrochlorination product were recorded. The NMR data were compared with the corresponding parameters obtained earlier for fenchone and monochlorofenchones in order to determine the differences between the carbonyl and oxime substituents from the NMR spectroscopic point of view, and to assign the stereochemistry of the oxime group. This stereochemistry could not…
Agronomical evaluation of Sicilian biotypes of Lavandula stoechas L. spp. stoechas and analysis of the essential oils
2015
The aim of this study was to characterize wild lavender, which was collected in three different areas of Sicily (Italy),according to agronomic and chemical evaluation. The collection sites were located in Pantelleria island, Partinico (a warm sub-area of Lauretum) and Castelbuono (a middle sub-area of Lauretum). All the populations were identified as Lavandula stoechas L. ssp. stoechas. Essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography– flame ionization detector (GC–FID) and GC–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). GC–FID and GC–MS analyses permitted the identification of 101 components from the essential oils. We analyzed only the flowers and leaves of L. stoechas …
