Orbital character variation of the Fermi surface and doping dependent changes of the dimensionality inBaFe2−xCoxAs2from angle-resolved photoemission …

2010

From a combination of high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations, we derive information on the dimensionality and the orbital character of the electronic states of ${\text{BaFe}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\text{Co}}_{x}{\text{As}}_{2}$. Upon increasing Co doping, the electronic states in the vicinity of the Fermi level take on increasingly three-dimensional character. Both the orbital variation with ${k}_{z}$ and the more three-dimensional nature of the doped compounds have important consequences for the nesting conditions and thus possibly also for the appearance of antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases.

Zero-bias conductance peak in detached flakes of superconducting 2H-TaS2probed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

2014

We report an anomalous tunneling conductance with a zero-bias peak in flakes of superconducting 2$H$-${\mathrm{TaS}}_{2}$ detached through mechanical exfoliation. To explain the observed phenomenon, we construct a minimal model for a single unit cell layer of superconducting 2$H$-${\mathrm{TaS}}_{2}$ with a simplified two-dimensional Fermi surface and a sign-changing Cooper-pair wave function induced by Coulomb repulsion. Superconductivity is induced in the central $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ pocket, where it becomes nodal. We show that weak scattering at the nodal Fermi surface, produced by nonperturbative coupling between tip and sample, gives Andreev states that lead to a zero-bias peak in the…

Nature of Heavy Quasiparticles in Magnetically Ordered Heavy FermionsUPd2Al3andUPt3

2002

The optical conductivity of the heavy fermions $\mathrm{UPd}{}_{2}{\mathrm{Al}}_{3}$ and $\mathrm{UPt}{}_{3}$ has been measured in the energy range from 0.04 to 5 meV. In both compounds a well pronounced pseudogap of less than 1 meV develops in the optical response at low temperatures; we relate this to the antiferromagnetic ordering. From the energy dependence of the effective mass and scattering rate we conclude that the enhancement of the mass mainly occurs below the energy which is related to magnetic correlations between the local magnetic moments and the itinerant electrons. This implies that the magnetic order in these compounds is the prerequisite to the formation of the heavy quasi…

Evidence for Multiband Superconductivity in the Heavy Fermion CompoundUNi2Al3

2004

Epitaxial thin films of the heavy fermion superconductor UNi2Al3 with Tc(max)=0.98 K were investigated. The transition temperature Tc depends on the current direction which can be related to superconducting gaps opening at different temperatures. Also the influence of the magnetic ordering at TN approximately 5 K on R(T) is strongly anisotropic, indicating different coupling between the magnetic moments and itinerant charge carriers on the multisheeted Fermi surface. The upper critical field Hc2(T) suggests an unconventional spin-singlet superconducting state.

The influence of topological phase transition on the superfluid density of overdoped copper oxides

2017

We show that a topological quantum phase transition, generating flat bands and altering Fermi surface topology, is a primary reason for the exotic behavior of the overdoped high-temperature superconductors represented by $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$, whose superconductivity features differ from what is described by the classical Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory [J.I. Bo\^zovi\'c, X. He, J. Wu, and A. T. Bollinger, Nature 536, 309 (2016)]. We demonstrate that 1) at temperature $T=0$, the superfluid density $n_s$ turns out to be considerably smaller than the total electron density; 2) the critical temperature $T_c$ is controlled by $n_s$ rather than by doping, and is a linear function of the $n_s$…

Neutron diffraction study of the heavy fermion superconductors UM2Al3(M=Pd, Ni)

1992

An elastic neutron scattering study was performed on the new superconducting heavy fermion systems UPd2Al3 and UNi2Al3. The neutron diffraction patterns reveal unambiguously long range antiferromagnetic order in UPd2Al3 with an ordered magnetic momentμ U = (0.85±0.03)μ B , which coexists with the superconducting state. This is by far the largestμ U value observed for any heavy fermion superconductor. For UNi2Al3, no long-range magnetic order could be observed for temperaturesT≧1.5 K, yielding an upper limit of the ordered moment of 0.2μ B .

Relative velocities for radial motion in expanding Robertson-Walker spacetimes

2011

The expansion of space, and other geometric properties of cosmological models, can be studied using geometrically defined notions of relative velocity. In this paper, we consider test particles undergoing radial motion relative to comoving (geodesic) observers in Robertson-Walker cosmologies, whose scale factors are increasing functions of cosmological time. Analytical and numerical comparisons of the Fermi, kinematic, astrometric, and the spectroscopic relative velocities of test particles are given under general circumstances. Examples include recessional comoving test particles in the de Sitter universe, the radiation-dominated universe, and the matter-dominated universe. Three distinct …

Direct Bound on the Total Decay Width of the Top Quark inpp¯Collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2009

We present the first direct experimental bound on the total decay width of the top quark, Gamma(t), using 955 pb(-1) of the Tevatron's p (p) over bar collisions recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We identify 253 top-antitop pair candidate events. The distribution of reconstructed top quark mass from these events is fitted to templates representing different values of the top quark width. Using a confidence interval based on likelihood-ratio ordering, we extract an upper limit at 95% C.L. of Gamma(t) < 13.1 GeV for an assumed top quark mass of 175 GeV/c(2).

Model-independent measurement of the W-boson helicity in top-quark decays at D0.

2008

Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T20:37:47Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2008-02-14 Science and Technology Facilities Council We present the first model-independent measurement of the helicity of W bosons produced in top quark decays, based on a 1fb-1 sample of candidate tt̄ events in the dilepton and lepton plus jets channels collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp̄ Collider. We reconstruct the angle θ* between the momenta of the down-type fermion and the top quark in the W boson rest frame for each top quark decay. A fit of the resulting cos θ* distribution finds that the fraction of longitudinal W bosons f0=0.425±0.166(stat)±0.102(syst) and the f…
