The Effects of Thermo-Baric Synthesis on the Structure and Properties of the Ferroelectric Li0.125Na0.875NbO3Solid Solution
2014
ABSTRACTResults of X-ray diffraction, dielectric, and Raman studies of the ferroelectric Li0.125Na0.875NbO3 solid solution obtained under hot-pressing conditions (6 GPa, 1400 and 1800 K) are compared with those of the same compound synthesized by conventional ceramics technology. The thermo-barometric synthesis is found to improve the ordering of cations and to increase the value of dielectric permittivity and ion conductivity of the ceramics.
High resolution x-ray investigation of periodically poled lithium tantalate crystals with short periodicity
2009
Domain engineering technology in lithium tantalate is a well studied approach for nonlinear optical applications. However, for several cases of interest, the realization of short period structures (< 2 m) is required, which make their characterization difficult with standard techniques. In this work, we show that high resolution x-ray diffraction is a convenient approach for the characterization of such structures, allowing us to obtain in a nondestructive fashion information such as the average domain period, the domain wall inclination, and the overall structure quality.
Ferroelectric Domain Walls in BaTiO3: Fingerprints in XRPD Diagrams and Quantitative HRTEM Image Analysis
1997
The structure of ferroelectric domain walls in BaTiO3 has been investigated through two complementary approaches, a global one by the fine analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns, the other essentially local via a quantitative image analysis method developed and applied to High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy images. These two original approaches converge towards a clear description of 90○ walls which are shown to be a 4–6 nm wide region where the crystallographic discontinuity is accommodated by irregular atomic displacements. The results given here demonstrate that the usual structural theoretical description of walls commonly accepted for energy calculations are far too simpli…
SNOM study of ferroelectric domains in doped LiNbO3 crystals
2009
Abstract This work shows a study of the periodic ferroelectric domains formed in LiNbO3 crystals doped with rare earths by means of scanning near field optical microscopy (SNOM) technique. It has been observed periodic structures associated with ferroelectric domains with an unexpected high value of the optical contrast working under reflectance SNOM mode. From Raman-Nath diffraction patterns, a refractive index modulation of Δ n ∼ 1 0 − 4 has been calculated. These results were correlated with the ferroelectric periodic domains obtained by the SNOM technique. A light waveguide effects along the ferroelectric domains is suggested to explain the high reflectance contrast observed in SNOM exp…
A step further in the comprehension of the magnetic coupling in gadolinium(III)-based carboxylate complexes
2013
Three new gadolinium(III) complexes of formula [Gd4(bta) 3(H2O)16]n·12nH2O (1), [Gd4(bta)3(H2O)12] n·18nH2O (2) and [Gd2(H 2bta)(bta)(H2O)2]n·4nH 2O (3) (H4bta = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid) have been synthesized and their structures determined by X-ray diffraction. 1 and 3 are three-dimensional compounds whereas 2 exhibits a two-dimensional structure. The ability of the bta4- to adopt different coordination modes accounts for these high dimensionalities although it precludes a rational structural design. The structures of 1-3 have in common the double oxo-carboxylate bridge between gadolinium(III) ions (μ-O: κ2O,O′) either as a discrete units (1 and 2) or as a chain (3) and one (3)…
Ferromagnetic dinuclear mixed-valence Mn(II)/Mn(III) complexes: building blocks for the higher nuclearity complexes. structure, magnetic properties, …
2013
A series of six mixed-valence Mn(II)/Mn(III) dinuclear complexes were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The reactivity of the complexes was surveyed, and structures of three additional trinuclear mixed-valence Mn(III)/Mn(II)/Mn(III) species were resolved. The magnetic properties of the complexes were studied in detail both experimentally and theoretically. All dinuclear complexes show ferromagnetic intramolecular interactions, which were justified on the basis of the electronic structures of the Mn(II) and Mn(III) ions. The large Mn(II)-O-Mn(III) bond angle and small distortion of the Mn(II) cation from the ideal square pyramidal geometry were shown to enhance the ferromag…
Structural and electric characteristics of (Na0.5Bi0.5)0.50Ba0.50TiO3 and (Na0.5Bi0.5)0.20Ba0.80TiO3 ceramics
2003
Abstract (Na0.5Bi0.5)0.50Ba0.50TiO3 and (Na0.5Bi0.5)0.20Ba0.80TiO3 ceramics have been prepared by the solid state reaction and studied by X-ray diffraction and by measurements of dielectric and ferroelectric properties between room temperature and 550 °C. A sharp increase in the electric permittivity and dielectric loss near 212 °C (for the first material) and near 205 °C (for the second material) on heating with remarkable thermal hysteresis have been observed. This sharp increase in dielectric responses indicates transformation between normal and relaxor ferroelectric states. The X-ray diffraction study shows that this transformation corresponds to the first order phase transition from te…
Detection of morphotropic phase boundary in A-site/Ca-substituted Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 complex oxides ferroelectric system
2020
Abstract Vibrational and structural properties of lead-free piezoelectric (1-x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–xCaTiO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.00) solid solutions have been investigated using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Different anomalies were detected and analyzed taking into consideration the phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase at room temperature. All Raman bands were interpreted through the variation in the peak positions (frequency) and the corresponding half-widths at half maximum (HWHM) as a function of x. XRD used as a complementary technique to Raman spectroscopy, showed that the rhombohedral – orthorhombic phase transition went gradually through an intermediate phase consist…
Low-pressure ferroelastic phase transition in rutile-type AX2 minerals: cassiterite (SnO2), pyrolusite (MnO2) and sellaite (MgF2)
2019
The structural behaviour of cassiterite (SnO2), pyrolusite (MnO2) and sellaite (MgF2), i.e. AX2-minerals, has been investigated at room temperature by in situ high-pressure single-crystal diffraction, up to 14 GPa, using a diamond anvil cell. Such minerals undergo a ferroelastic phase transition, from rutile-like structure (SG: P42/mnm) to CaCl2-like structure (SG: Pnnm), at ≈ 10.25, 4.05 and 4.80 GPa, respectively. The structural evolution under pressure has been described by the trends of some structure parameters that are other than zero in the region of the low-symmetry phase’s stability. In particular, three tilting-angles (ω, ω′, ABS) and the metric distortion of the cation-centred oc…
Heterovalent ion replacement in bi7Ti4NbO21: Some new compounds and phase transitions
1996
Abstract Simultaneous heterovalent substitutions at two cationic sites of the bismuth mixed-layered compound Bi7Ti4NbO21 have been made. Two new compounds: Bi2Pb⅓Ti(4/3)Mo⅓O7 and Bi(4/3)PbTiMo⅔O7, were obtained and identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. A model of possible mixed layer structure is discussed. Ferroelectric phase transitions at 510°C and 550°C have been studied by dielectric measurements.
