Field effect in the viscosity of magnetic colloids studied by multi-particle collision dynamics
2019
Abstract Colloidal solutions of magnetic nanoparticles are usually employed when the fluidity and magnetic properties are required at the same time, either in technical or biomedical applications. However, when the magnetic size of the nanoparticles is large enough (>12–15 nm) the colloid may form an equilibrium structure with or without the external magnetic field, which can significantly influence its rheology. Using multi-particle collision dynamics we study the internal structure and viscosity of the magnetic colloids at varying magnitudes of the externally applied field. We show a generalized structural behavior across all studied regimes and an appreciable increase of flow resistance …
Magnetic field control of gas-liquid mass transfer in ferrofluids
2020
Abstract Gas-liquid mass transfer plays a key role in a broad range of industrial processes. The magnetic field control over the morphology of the gas-liquid interface and solute transport is an attractive feature if it can be realized efficiently. However, the magnetic properties of typical liquids and gases are rather weak. The experimental investigation is carried out to evaluate the effect of the magnetic field, which is mediated by magnetic nanoparticles, on the gas-liquid mass exchange during the sparging run through a hydrocarbon ferrofluid. The results indicate that the gradient field is especially effective at controlling the gas-liquid contact volume: the foaming of the liquid dur…
Numerical investigation of thermomagnetic convection in a heated cylinder under the magnetic field of a solenoid
2011
The main objective of this paper is the numerical investigation of the process of thermomagnetic convection of a special temperature sensitive ferrofluid. The fluid is studied in a cylindrical domain, with constant temperatures on the top and bottom ends and adiabatic boundary conditions on the sidewalls. The thermomagnetic convection is generated by a non-uniform constant magnetic field of a solenoid, which is placed in a hollow area inside the domain. It has been found that the efficiency of convective heat transfer in such a set-up can be increased up to sevenfold by magnetic field within the studied range of parameters.
New transport properties of ferrocolloids: magnetic Soret effect and thermomagnetoosmosis
2005
The paper deals with critical analysis of experiments on thermodiffusion in ferrocolloids. The observed magnetic Soret effect is significantly stronger than that predicted theoretically. It is shown that the main reason for that is the influence of a magnetic field on mass diffusion. Besides, some measurements are effected by uncontrolled thermal and solutal magnetic convection. Even in porous media, when macroscopic convection is depressed, thermodiffusion can be disturbed by microconvective mass transfer induced by particle magnetophoresis on filter grains.
Magnetic particle mixing with magnetic micro-convection for microfluidics
2015
International audience; In this paper we discuss the magnetic micro-convection phenomenon as a tool for mixing enhancement in microfluidics systems in cases when one of the mis-cible fluids is a magnetic particle colloid. A system of a water-based magnetic fluid and water is investigated experimentally under homogeneous magnetic field in a Hele-Shaw cell. Subsequent image analysis both qualitatively and quan-titatively reveals the high enhancement of mixing efficiency provided by this method. The mixing efficiency dependence on the magnetic field and the phys-ical limits is discussed. A suitable model for a continuous-flow microfluidics setup for mixing with magnetic micro-convection is als…
Heat and mass transfer phenomena in magnetic fluids
2007
In this article the influence of a magnetic field on heat and mass transport phenomena in magnetic fluids (ferrofluids) will be discussed. The first section is dealing with a magnetically driven convection, the so called thermomagnetic convection while in the second section the influence of a temperature gradient on the mass transport, the Soret effect in ferrofluids, is reviewed. Thermo-optical mirror on a free ferrofluid surface
1997
Here we report on the first, to our knowledge, direct experimental observation of giant thermo-optical mirror effect on the free surface of ferrofluid under He-Ne laser excitation. In our experiment a slightly focused laser beam of power in mW range is incident nearly normally to the surface, and a characteristic diffraction ring pattern has been observed in reflection mode. Concave surface deformation has been clearly observed at laser irradiated spot and has been explained in terms of lubrication theory approach for laser driven thermocapillary motion in thin layer of light absorbing fluid.
Magnētiskā šķidruma pilieni rotējošā laukā: teorija, eksperimenti un simulācijas
2022
Pore fabric geometry inferred from magnetic and acoustic anisotropies in rocks with various mineralogy, permeability and porosity.
2014
14 pages; International audience; he ferrofluid impregnation technique combined with anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility measurements (AMSff) is one of the ways to analyze the 3-D geometry of the pore space in a rock and indirectly to infer the anisotropy of permeability. We applied this method on different types of rocks (sandstones and carbonates) with a range of different porosity values (10-30%) and permeability (1 mD to 1 D). To get additional information on both the pore aspect ratio and the directional anisotropy we used another technique, measuring the anisotropy of P-waves velocity (APV) in dry and water saturated conditions. Comparing between both methods shows that despite the …
Water-soluble magnetic nanoparticles with biologically active stabilizers
2009
We present the results of the interaction of iron oxide nanoparticles with some biologically active surfactants, namely, oleic acid and cytotoxic alkanolamine derivatives. Physico-chemical properties, as magnetization, magnetite concentration and particle diameter, of the prepared magnetic samples were studied. The nanoparticle size of 11 nm for toluene magnetic fluid determined by TEM is in good agreement with the data obtained by the method of magnetogranulometry. In vitro cytotoxic effect of water-soluble nanoparticles with different iron oxide:oleic acid molar ratio were revealed against human fibrosarcoma and mouse hepatoma cells. In vivo results using a sarcoma mouse model showed obse…
