Crosslinked Spherical Nanoparticles with Core-Shell Topology

2000

Core–shell microgels are crosslinked nanosized spherical particles with a chemical composition that is different on the surface compared to the core region. By employing a core with special optical properties, e.g., a core labeled either with organic dye molecules or noble metal clusters (see Figure), these particles are perfectly suited as optical tracers in diffusion measurements. Here, the shell may be important for several reasons: (i) as a protective coating to suppress any influence of the labels on particle mobility, (ii) to optically separate individual particles even at high concentrations, and (iii) to compatibilize the particles with e.g., polymeric chains. Recent developments in…

The system of carbon fibre-reinforced plastics micro-tubes for self-healing of glass fibre-reinforced plastics laminates

2016

A system of pultruded carbon fibre-reinforced plastics micro-tubes is used for self-healing simulation in laminated polymer composite. The system consists of a package of micro-tubes, placed in the symmetry plane of the GFR/epoxy laminate stack. Healing agent is a mixture of the epoxy resin and hardener. The healing agent releases and penetrates into the cracks after the composite is damaged by the quasi-static indentation. The specimens are healed at 30℃ for 24 h. Rectangular specimens notched under ASTM D2733 have been subjected to tensile test to determine interlaminar shear strength. Shear strength of specimens has been compared in three states (virgin, damaged and healed) for various …

A Statistical Approach to Permeability of Clustered Fibre Reinforcements

2004

The focus is set on mesoscale modelling of permeability of real fabrics used in composite manufacturing. Of particular interest is the effect of expected perturbations from perfect geometries, such as fibre bundle crimp, on the permeability. To start with, variational methods are used to calculate the permeability of individual gaps between fibre bundles. Based on this study a network of unit cells is formed enabling studies of two-and three-dimensional flow through the structure. From such an analysis the overall permeability of an arbitrary distribution of unit cell permeabilities can be calculated. Here random and controlled distributions are simulated. The former is an approximate repr…

The Effect of Damage and Geometrical Variability on the Tensile Strength Distribution of Flax Fibers

2010

Natural fibers of plant origin are finding non-traditional applications as reinforcement of composite materials. The mechanical properties of fibers exhibit considerable scatter, being affected by the natural variability in plant as well as the damage accumulated during processing. For bast fibers, the primary damage mode is kink bands – zones of misaligned cellulose microfibrils extending across the fiber and oriented roughly perpendicularly to its axis. Another feature typical for natural fibers and contributing to the scatter of fiber strength is the variability of diameter along a fiber length and among the fibers. An analytical expression for the distribution of the longitudinal tensil…

Effect of microstructure and chemical composition on localized corrosion resistance of a AISI 304L stainless steel after nanopulsed-laser surface mel…

2015

Abstract Changes induced in the surface properties of AISI 304L stainless steel when it is treated with a nanopulsed ytterbium-doped fiber laser were investigated to determine the microscale distribution of its physico-chemical properties. A Gaussian energy distribution was created with a radius of 71 μm (1/e2) at the focal point. Local investigations were carried out using transmission electron microscopy to consider the effect of overlapping individual laser impacts. The results obtained reveal that laser surface melting leads to changes in the crystallographic structure of the steel through the formation of a δ-ferritic phase. It also results in the creation of an oxide layer that increa…

Effect of a Compatibilizer on the Morphology and Properties of Polypropylene/Polyethylentherephthalate Spun Fibers

2017

Fibers spun by melt spinning of binary and ternary polypropylene/ polyethylenetherephthalate blends have been produced and characterized in order to investigate the effect of a compatibilizer on their morphology and mechanical properties. The compatibilizer was a maleic anhydride-functionalized rubber copolymer. The effect of the compatibilizer was well evident in the isotropic state, as the morphology became very fine, the size of the dispersed particles was very small, and the adhesion was better. The effect of the compatibilizer on the mechanical properties is very relevant, especially in the elongation at break. On the contrary, no relevant effect was observed in the anisotropic oriente…
