Morphology-based measurement of activation time in human atrial fibrillation
2003
The measurement of the activation time is crucial to allow the correct automatic analysis and classification of intracardiac electrograms recorded in the human atria during atrial fibrillation (AF). This study proposes a method which accounts for the morphology of bipolar signals. After ventricular artifact removal and activation wave recognition, the fiducial point of the activation wave was set at its local barycentre (LB). The method was tested on a set of 30 AF bipolar recordings of increasing complexity class; its performance was compared with that of the traditional methods of maximum peak (MP) or maximum slope (MS) estimation, taking the manual measurements performed by an expert car…
Ventricular fibrillation detection from ECG surface electrodes using different filtering techniques, window length and artificial neural networks
2017
Medical personnel face many difficulties when diagnosing ventricular fibrillation (VF). Its correct diagnosis allows to decide the right medical treatment and, therefore, it is essential to tell it apart adequately from ventricular tachycardia (VT) and other arrhythmias. If the required therapy is not appropriate, the personnel could cause serious injuries or even induce VF. In this work, a diagnosis automatic system for the detection of VF through feature extraction was developed. To verify the validity of this method, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) classifier was used. The ECG signals used were obtained from the MIT-BIH Malignant Ventricular Arrhythmia Database and AHA (2000 series) d…
Effektivitt prklinischer Notfallversorgung Fiktion oder Fakt?
1996
The current increase in the cost of health care must be considered as a severe threat to the prehospital emergency services system. Two examples have been selected--the patient with polytrauma and the patient in cardiac arrest--to demonstrate the dilemma between a need for objective data and the requirements of emergency patients. Study results obtained in trauma patients indicating that total prehospital time, including scene time, is correlated to patient outcome have led to the conclusion that at the scene treatment by emergency physicians may be dispensable. It has, however also been demonstrated that the time required for medical treatment at the scene is equivalent to 20% of the total…
Carotid plaque detection improves the predictve value of CHA2DS2-VASc score in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrilation: The ARAPACIS Study
2017
Abstract Background and aims Vascular disease (VD), as assessed by history of myocardial infarction or peripheral artery disease or aortic plaque, increases stroke risk in atrial fibrillation (AF), and is a component of risk assessment using the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score. We investigated if systemic atherosclerosis as detected by ultrasound carotid plaque (CP) could improve the predictive value of the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score. Methods We analysed data from the ARAPACIS study, an observational study including 2027 Italian patients with non-valvular AF, in whom CP was detected using Doppler Ultrasonography. Results VD was reported in 351 (17.3%) patients while CP was detected in 16.6% patients. Ad…
Organization measures of atrial activity during fibrillation
2008
The present chapter summarizes the state-of-art of how to quantify the degree of atrial organization during AF through a review of the main signal processing techniques employed for the analysis of atrial electrical activity. As the concept of atrial organization may assume different meanings in the context of AF, particular attention is paid to stress those peculiar characters of organization probed and captured by each method.
Can Ventricular Resynchronization Reduce Atrial Fibrillation Recurrences?
2003
In recent years a new pacing therapy has been proposed for patients affected by heart failure (HF) in order to reduce inter- [1,2], intra- [3,4], and atrioventricular [5] (AV) dyssynchrony. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has the goal of correcting these hemodynamic disorders, thus improving left ventricular (LV) performance. The benefits of CRT have been evaluated in a series of clinical trials [6-10].
Lipofuscin Hypothesis of Alzheimer’s Disease
2011
The primary culprit responsible for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) remains unknown. Aβ protein has been identified as the main component of amyloid of senile plaques, the hallmark lesion of AD, but it is not definitively established whether the formation of extracellular Aβ deposits is the absolute harbinger of the series of pathological events that hit the brain in the course of sporadic AD. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to a relatively overlooked age-related product, lipofuscin, and advance the hypothesis that its release into the extracellular space following the death of neurons may substantially contribute to the formation of senile plaques. The presence of intraneuronal Aβ, sim…
Obesity and Outcomes in COVID-19: When an Epidemic and Pandemic Collide.
2020
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and in much of the westernized world, contributing to considerable morbidity. Several of these obesity-related morbidities are associated with greater risk for death with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 penetrates human cells through direct binding with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptors on the cell surface. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 expression in adipose tissue is higher than that in lung tissue, which means that adipose tissue may be vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. Obese patients also have worse outcomes with COVID-19 infection, including respiratory failure, n…
Goodpasture Antigen-binding Protein (GPBP) Directs Myofibril Formation
2011
Goodpasture antigen-binding protein-1 (GPBP-1) is an exportable non-conventional Ser/Thr kinase that regulates glomerular basement membrane collagen organization. Here we provide evidence that GPBP-1 accumulates in the cytoplasm of differentiating mouse myoblasts prior to myosin synthesis. Myoblasts deficient in GPBP-1 display defective myofibril formation, whereas myofibrils assemble with enhanced efficiency in those overexpressing GPBP-1. We also show that GPBP-1 targets the previously unidentified GIP130 (GPBP-interacting protein of 130 kDa), which binds to myosin and promotes its myofibrillar assembly. This report reveals that GPBP-1 directs myofibril formation, an observation that expa…
Detection of Type VII collagen in odontogenic keratocyst: An immunohistochemical study
2019
Background Separation of the epithelial lining from the underlying connective tissue wall has been a frequently observed and unique feature in odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), but not in other odontogenic cysts nor neoplasms. No study on OKC has been reported evaluating the role of type VII Collagen, the anchoring fibrils, which function in stabilising the epithelial structure. The purpose of this study was to assess the role of type VII collagen in the fragility of the epithelium leading to a high recurrence rate in OKCs. Material and Methods Immunohistochemical staining with Abcam® Monoclonal Mouse Anti-Collagen VII Antibody [LH7.2] (used at a dilution of 1:200) on 30 tissues of OKC. The ch…
