Towards a philological characterization of don Enrique de Villena’s "Los doze trabajos de Hércules"
2019
2018
The sirventes of the troubadour era has been broadly studied, but there are not overall explanations concerning the evolution of the sirventes genre in the Catalan-speaking lands of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This paper propounds a catalogue of sirventesos concerning its historical development, the troubadour models, rhetorical and grammatical treatises, and genre assignment in rubrics. Our catalogue contains thirty-one Catalan sirventesos , including twenty-eight extant items and three items lost. In some cases the literary motifs of the sirventes cross boundaries in a process of poetic hybridization with other moral genres which borrow out themes, images and rhetorical strate…
The Triumphs? Golden Age : a comparison between three European translations of Ilicino?s Commentary.
2020
During the last part of the fifteenth and the first decades of the sixteenth centuries, the dissemination of Petrarch’s Trionfi – the so-called ‘second wave’ of Petrarchism – was characterized by the extraordinary editorial success, in Italy as well as in the rest of Western Europe, of Bernardo Ilicino’s Commento on the Trionfi. By promoting an erudite, encyclopedic, and moralizing reading of Petrarch’s poem, Ilicino’s commentary effectively became a lens through which generations of European readers approached the text. Nonetheless, the dissemination of the commentary proved not to be immune from the influence of sixteenth-century lyrical Petrarchism, which started developing almost at the…

2021
This paper aims to trace the original appearance of the Palazzo Pretorio of Palermo, through archival documents and existing iconography referring in particular to before the modifications made according to Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda’s plan in the late nineteenth century. The discovery of new documents and of an unpublished drawing made before the earthquake of 1823, which damaged the structure, has allowed us to further advance the state of knowledge about the edifice and has reduced the level of approximation of the reconstruction hypothesis. In particular, it was possible to have a realistic idea of the conformation of the main facade, originally facing south on the San Cataldo plane, and …
Irrigation and Political Power in the Medieval Kingdom of Valencia
2018
The medieval Kingdom of Valencia (Spain) was a European feudal society born in the thirteenth century out of the military conquest of the east of al-Andalus by the Crown of Aragon. This work focuses on the social organization of irrigation institutions in the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries, which replaced the water management systems in use during the Andalusi period. The study analyzes the three types of water-governance systems in operation: irrigation systems managed by royal officials, irrigation systems managed by municipalities, and irrigation systems managed by corporations of autonomous farmers. The chapter also examines the different royal and municipal officials t…
Three Liberal Conceptions of Self-Realization: Creativity, Authenticity and Flourishing
2018
The concept of self-realization, in its most contemporary sense, owes much to an idea, which arose with the Enlightenment, as the culmination of the process of the rebirth of the subject in the fifteenth century. However, the notion of self-realization is complex because it entails a combination of two apparently antagonistic elements: freedom and normativity. In this chapter, I intend to clarify this concept by examining the theses of three authors—J. S. Mill, Taylor and Nussbaum—in whose work the idea of self-realization appears in a significant way. The three philosophers underline some common elements that together with the concepts of project and imagination held by Ortega shed light o…
Abstract: The coherence of March’s Aristotelianism has not yet been weighted up. We want to contribute to its weighting with …
María de Fonseca (c. 1486-1521) and the Marquis of Zenete (1473-1523): Aristocratic Rebels and Patrons of Renaissance Culture
2016
