Settore L-ANT/02 - Storia GrecaThe history of Greek Sicily is marked at its key moments by the persistent image of Dinomenid Gelon. This work analyses the paradigmatic value taken on by his figure in the civic memory of the people of Syracuse and in historiographic production. It also reconstructs the political dynamics which pushed the principal tyrants of Syracuse (from Dionysius I to Hiero II) to establish comparisons with Gelon. His exemplum was used to legitimate political actions and commitment against the Carthaginianparticular attention was also given to the Library of History of Diodorus Siculus and the role that the figure of Dinomenid assumes in itregarding these aspects the work of this author seems to have sometimes the signs of a personal interpretation of history: one that cannot always be explained in relation to the use of the two principal sources for Western history Timaeus and Philistos.

2018

The paper considers the monumental crater of the Niobid Painter found in Gela in 1889 and preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Agrigento. It depicts an Amazonomachy all round its body, the myth of Herakles and Pholos along with a Centauromachy on the two sides of its neck. The first part of the contribution traces the history of the vase from its discovery to the musealization; the symbolical meaning taken up by this object and this type of precious vases in the post-united Sicily is reconstructed. In the second part of the paper, the crater (a cinerarium) with its images are analyzed in their ancient context of use. This study is an attempt to reconstruct the physiognomy of the Geloan…

Salvatore Sciarrino. The Sicilian alchemist composer

2012

Salvatore Sciarrino (Palermo, 1947) began his career in the fervent climate of the six Settimane Internazionali Nuova Musica. Still very young he attracted the attention of the musical world, with his sonorous invention full of startling innovation that was to make him one of the protagonists of the contemporary musical panorama. Sciarrino is today the best-known and most performed Italian composer. His catalogue is a prodigiously large one, and his career is dotted with prestigious prizes and awards. Alchemically transmuting sound, finding new virginity in it has for fifty years been the objective of his music. Timbric experimentation is the goal of his virtuosity. The prevailing use of ha…

La Sicilia negli Orsi di Dino Buzzati e Lorenzo Mattotti

2022

Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature ComparateSicily in Bears of Dino Buzzati and Lorenzo Mattotti · In Dino Buzzati’s illustrated fairy tale The Famous Invasion of the Bears in Sicily (1945) and its film adaptation by Lorenzo Mattotti (2019) the Sicilian setting is decisive. In both cases Sicily is an island with a large volcano – transfigured into a fantastic setting or rewritten according to certain stereotypes – that the two authors use with different meanings within the ecosystem of their narratives. Only through a comparison between the two works will it be possible to distinguish the representation of the two Sicilies which are narrated within an interval of about seventy years. If one does not consider the story of the Bears merely a children’s fairy tale using simplistic stylistic devices but on the contrary sees it as an opportunity for the author to deal with serious and complex issues such as an ante litteram Ecocritical perspective or questions of inter-group conflicts derived from Subaltern or Migration Studies the images of the two Sicilies can provide altogether new interpretations.

2013

Subjects with a congenital or acquired physical disfigurement have to cope with specific challenges related to self-perception and social relationships. Research into the objective severity of disfigurement and the quality of the subject’s psychosocial regulation revealed a non-linear and non-univocal correlation between these two variables. This review analyses factors that influence adjustment in cases of disfigurement: personal history, phase of life cycle, social support and coping strategies. From a clinical perspective it is stressed how attention to the psychological dimension increases the effectiveness of different types of psychological, educational and medical intervention.

Paradigmi mitici, cifre simboliche e rituale funerario: su alcuni crateri figurati dalle necropoli greche di Sicilia

2021

2019

A new contextual analysis is proposed in order to reappraise the well known theatrical images from Lipari. In the wake of the researches made by L. Bernabò Brea and M. Cavalier, the clay masks of comic, satyric and tragic characters and figurines, on one hand, and the “theatrical” vases on the other were reputed to echo or to “illustrate” Greek plays, in the frame of a Dionysian cult. Lastly, A. Schwarzmaier reviewed this thesis, pointing at the ritual context in which the masks were used and deposed in a set of drinking and pouring vases near the grave during the burial, and concluding that they were a visual clue of a Dionysian funerary banquet. Examining again the whole evidence (masks,…
