Neuroproteomics in the auditory brainstem: candidate proteins for ultrafast and precise information processing.

In the mammalian auditory brainstem, the cochlear nuclear complex (CN) and the superior olivary complex (SOC) feature structural and functional specializations for ultrafast (<1 ms) and precise information processing. Their proteome, the basis for structure and function, has been rarely analyzed so far. Here we identified and quantified the protein profiles of three major auditory brainstem regions of adult rats, the CN, the SOC, and the inferior colliculus (IC). The rest of the brain served as a reference. Pro-prion Binds Filamin A, Facilitating Its Interaction with Integrin β1, and Contributes to Melanomagenesis

Filamin A (FLNA) is an integrator of cell mechanics and signaling. The spreading and migration observed in FLNA sufficient A7 melanoma cells but not in the parental FLNA deficient M2 cells have been attributed to FLNA. In A7 and M2 cells, the normal prion (PrP) exists as pro-PrP, retaining its glycosylphosphatidyl-inositol (GPI) anchor peptide signal sequence (GPI-PSS). The GPI-PSS of PrP has a FLNA binding motif and binds FLNA. Reducing PrP expression in A7 cells alters the spatial distribution of FLNA and organization of actin and diminishes cell spreading and migration. Integrin β1 also binds FLNA. Porifera (sponges) constitute the lowest metazoan phylum, Experiments examined whether sponges can recognize self/nonself molecules. Cells from the marine sponge Suberites domuncula were incubated with membranes from either S. domuncula or another marine sponge, Geodia cydonium, as well as with recombinant alpha-integrin from G. cydonium. The cells responded immediately with a rise of intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca-i(2+)]) if they were treated with membranes from G. cydonium but not after treatment by those from S. domuncula. Microtubules and intermediate filaments of herpes simplex virus infected cells.

The fate of microtubules and of vimentin or keratin containing intermediate filaments during infection with fusion or rounding producing strains of herpes simplex virus (HSV) was investigated. Microtubules polymerize early after fusion of cells. However, they do not reconstitute 6–7 hours post infection (p.i.) after release of a colcemid block. Keratin and vimentin are maintained around the original nucleus still inside of recruited cells in the polykaryocyte. Cells of fibroblastic and epithelial origin fuse. Intracellular trafficking of endogenous fibroblast growth factor‐2

We have previously reported how the release of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) is mediated by shed vesicles. In the present study, we address the question of how newly synthesized FGF-2 is targeted to the budding vesicles. Considering that in vitro cultured Sk-Hep1 hepatocarcinoma cells release FGF-2 and shed membrane vesicles only when cultured in the presence of serum, we added serum to starved cells and monitored intracellular movements of the growth factor. FGF-2 was targeted both to the cell periphery and to the nucleus and nucleolus. Nonlinear Kelvin waves on a quantized vortex line in superfluid helium

In this paper we show an exact solution (Kelvin wave) of an approximated dynamical equation for a quantized vortex line in helium superfluid at finite temperature. It is shown that the applied heat flux interacts with the vortex line, and the amplitude of the Kelvin wave can grow (the so-called Donnelly instability) or decrease according with the mutual direction between heat flux and wave vector.

Ectopic expression of desmin in the epidermis of transgenic mice permits development of a normal epidermis.

Cell architecture is largely based on the interaction of cytoskeletal proteins, which include intermediate filaments (IF), microfilaments, microtubules, as well as their type-specific membrane-attachment structures and associated proteins. In order to further our understanding of IF proteins and to address the fundamental issue whether different IF perform unique functions in different tissues, we expressed a desmin transgene in the basal epidermis of mice. Epidermal morphogenesis and hair follicle (HF) development depend on the ability of keratinocytes to adhere to the basement membrane (BM) and migrate along the extracellular matrix. Integrins are cell-matrix receptors that control keratinocyte adhesion and migration, and are recognized as major regulators of epidermal homeostasis. Higher-order Kerr terms allow ionization-free filamentation in gases.

We show that higher-order nonlinear indices ($n_4$, $n_6$, $n_8$, $n_{10}$) provide the main defocusing contribution to self-channeling of ultrashort laser pulses in air and Argon at 800 nm, in contrast with the previously accepted mechanism of filamentation where plasma was considered as the dominant defocusing process. Their consideration allows to reproduce experimentally observed intensities and plasma densities in self-guided filaments.

Measurement of high order Kerr refractive index of major air components: erratum

A clarification is missing concerning the high order Kerr non-linearities deduced from our experimental data published in [Opt. Express 17, 13429-13434 (2009)]. Here, we rectify this omission by making explicit the distinction between cross-Kerr and Kerr effects, and by extrapolating the value of the nonlinear refractive index for the last effect. Since the occurrence of sign inversion in the Kerr effect is not affected, the overall report in [Opt. Express 17, 13429-13434] remains valid.
