Method of Discrimination of Surface Fractality

Abstract A simple method for the discrimination of surface fractality is proposed. This method is based on the comparison of the nitrogen adsorption isotherm on a given sample with the "standard" isotherm on a smooth surface. The proposed comparative method makes it possible to determine the lower limit of the scale range of surface fractality. A thermodynamic method is recommended as a complement to fractal analysis in the scale range of about 10-1000 A. The results of the investigation of surface roughness are presented with examples of typical samples of silica gels, porous glasses, apatite, and coal.

[001] Surface Structure in SrTiO3 — Atomistic Study

Thin superconducting films attract great attention as a promising material for plenty of applications. The surface determines most of the physical properties of these films. We studied the polarization effect for the [001] surface of perovskite ABO 3 superconducting crystals on the example of SrTiO 3. Optimization of the ion positions in several surface layers is provided. These ions are placed in the external field of the rest crystal. The interaction between ions is described by means of the shell model technique. We show that Ti +4, Sr 2+ and O -2 ions displace differently from their crystalline sites, which leads to the creation of a dipole moment in the near-surface region.

Influence of the electrical interface properties on the rheological behavior of sonicated soy lecithin dispersions

A significant effect, on the rheological behavior, due to the electrical properties of vesicles formed from concentrated soy lecithin dispersions have been studied in this work. The rheopectic behavior of concentrated soy lecithin dispersions (120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 g L−1) prepared by swelling–light sonication–freezing–unfreezing procedure is studied and it is specially emphasized on the transition under steady shear from lamellar phase of planar sheets to closed structures as multilamellar vesicles. Inactivation of the ftsH gene of Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1: Effects on growth, stress tolerance, cell surface properties and biofilm formation

FtsH proteins are ubiquitous membrane-bound, ATP-dependent metalloproteases of the AAA family. In eubacteria, FtsH is involved in protein quality control under stress conditions. Lactobacillus plantarum is a widespread lactic acid bacterium that is encountered in several fermented food, including dairy products, vegetables and meat. In the present work the expression of the ftsH gene of L. plantarum was studied by quantitative real time RT-PCR in bacterial cultures subjected to various abiotic stresses. Epitaxial growth of molybdenum on TiO2(110)

Abstract Molybdenum was deposited on blue (i.e. non-stoichiometric) TiO2(1 1 0) surface using a very low deposition rate (less than 0.05 eqML min−1). The resulting deposit was investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD), LEED and XPS. Just after deposition, the film is mainly constituted of metallic molybdenum, contains oxygen homogeneously dispersed through the whole deposit and the broad features detected in XPD scans are interpreted as a coarse epitaxy between TiO2(1 1 0) surface and the (0 0 1) face of bcc molybdenum. Effect of kinks and concerted diffusion mechanisms on mass transport and growth on stepped metal surfaces

Abstract We study the effect of kinks and concerted atomic mechanisms on diffusion processes relevant to metal-on-metal homoepitaxy on fcc metal surfaces vicinal to the fcc (100) direction. First, we carry out extensive finite-temperature molecular dynamics simulations based on the effective medium theory to search for diffusion mechanisms that dominate the mass transport perpendicular and parallel to step edges. Then, the energetics of these processes are studied by ground state calculations. Our results show that kinks play an important role for diffusion both across and along step edges.
