Molecular genetics of Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms on indwelling medical devices.
2005
Staphylococcus epidermidis is an opportunistic pathogen associated with foreign body infections and nosocomial sepsis. The pathogenicity of S. epidermidis is mostly due to its ability to colonize indwelling polymeric devices and form a thick, multilayered biofilm. Biofilm formation is a major problem in treating S. epidermidis infection as biofilms provide significant resistance to antibiotics and to components of the innate host defenses. Various cell surface associated bacterial factors play a role in adherence and accumulation of the biofilm such as the polysaccharide intercellular adhesin and the autolysin AtlE. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that global regulators such as the …
Electrochemical detection and screening of bladder cancer recurrence using direct electrochemical analysis of urine: A non-invasive tool for diagnosis
2018
Although detection of urothelial cell carcinoma (or bladder cancer, BC) can be performed via cytological, molecular and genetic marker tests on urine, cystoscopy, an invasive technique, still remains as the gold methodology in clinical practice. It is presented a non-invasive method for detecting BC recurrence consisting of a direct electrochemical test in urine combining voltammetric data at gold and glassy carbon electrodes. The diagnosis is based on the ratio between characteristic voltammetric features recorded for tryptophan, serotonin and melatonin and other related metabolites. The method was tested by means of a clinical trial with 30 patients diagnosed of bladder cancer and a two c…
Erythritol-enriched powder and oral biofilm regrowth on dental implants: an in vitro study.
2021
Background Peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis are the main biological complications associated with dental implants. Since most authors agree that bacteria play a major etiological role, the main aims of this study were to determine if a formulation of erythritol and chlorhexidine applied with an air polishing system inhibits biofilm regrowth over dental implants and to compare the decontamination capacity of this therapy with that of mechanical removal by saline and gauze. Material and Methods A multispecies biofilm (P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans, F. nucleatum, A. naeslundii, V. parvula and S. oralis) was grown for 14 days on 52 dental implants in an artificial mouth. Th…

Decomposition Process of Carboxylate MOF HKUST-1 Unveiled at the Atomic Scale Level
2016
HKUST-1 is a metal-organic framework (MOF) which plays a significant role both in applicative and basic fields of research, thanks to its outstanding properties of adsorption and catalysis but also because it is a reference material for the study of many general properties of MOFs. Its metallic group comprises a pair of Cu2+ ions chelated by four carboxylate bridges, forming a structure known as paddle-wheel unit, which is the heart of the material. However, previous studies have well established that the paddle-wheel is incline to hydrolysis. In fact, the prolonged exposure of the material to moisture promotes the hydrolysis of Cu-O bonds in the paddle-wheels, so breaking the crystalline n…

The Evolution of Jane Eyre in Film Adaptation:from Classic Female Stereotype to Independent Woman
2022
Jane Eyre is one of the English novels that has been most adapted for the big screen. The recreation of the Victorian atmosphere by Charlotte Brontë, the female author of the novel, as well as the universe of its main character, an orphaned girl who manages to survive as a governess in a hostile environment, have been especially interesting for the film world. Furthermore, Jane Eyre’s markedly feminist character has converted her into a pioneering character in this medium, in addition to determining her timelessness. With the aim of gaining further insights into the representation of Jane Eyre in the film adaptations directed by Robert Stevenson (1944), Franco Zeffirelli (1996) and Cary Fuk…
Maternidades siniestras en los mind-game films (1990-2020)
2022

"Somers Town". Multilingual settings explored in audiovisual translation contexts
2018
In the last decades advances in digital communication and audiovisual translation studies have significantly transformed the ways by which texts and people travel across linguistic, spatial and temporal boundaries. This is particularly evident in the everchanging landscape of audiovisual translation as a consequence of the digital revolution that has contributed to the creation of new forms of adaptation and proliferation of mediated and non-mediated products. The case of multilingual discourse applied to contemporary diasporic and migrant films, in which sociolinguistics intervenes as a methodological approach to the translation of marginal voices, has gained scholarly attention as a resul…
