Platonic theories of the perfect state and the human soul in Gulliver's voyage to Houyhnmland

This article discusses the various ways in which Platonic philosophy shapes Houyhnhnmland as described in Voyage IV of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver's Travels. As a means to do so, it takes into consideration Plato’s Republic and his theories on the perfect state, as well as the Greek philosopher’s dialogue Phaedrus, which contains the Platonic theory of the tripartite human soul. The final claim of this article is that both the Houyhnhnms and the Yahoos are “pure souls” made up of just one of the three soul components pointed out by Plato (namely, the appetites in the case of the Yahoos, and the rational part in that of the Houyhnhnms). How conceptual structure impinges on constructional behavior: the case of "give" verbs

This article aims to cast light on the constructional behavior of nine of Levin�s (1993) give verbs, i.e. feed, lease, lend, loan, pay, peddle, rent, sell, and trade, in the ditransitive and dative constructions. This paper also proposes onomasiological hierarchies for these verbs on the basis of Faber and Mairal's (1999) lexematics-oriented taxonomies. My findings concur with Levin� (1993) and Faber and Mairal's (1999) hypothesis according to which the internal semantic parameters of a given verb function as predictors of that verb�s syntactic representations. Zora Neale Hurston’s Moses, Man of the Mountain (1939) stands in the tradition of African American use of the biblical musings that aims to relativize and yet uphold a new version of the sacred story under the gaze of a black woman that manipulates and admonishes the characters of the gospel to offer a feminist side of the Bible. The novel discloses Hurston’s mastering of the aesthetics that black folklore infused to the African American cultural experience and her accommodation to bring to the fore the needed voice of black women. “The drops which fell from Shakespear’s Pen”: Hamlet in Contemporary Fiction

Questions of gender, ethnicity and sexuality have all been raised by novelists intent on rewriting Shakespeare from the position of what have been seen as cultural margins. While discussions of such rewritings are ongoing, few concerted efforts have been made to trace a pattern in the treatment of Shakespearean allusion and adaptation at the hands of British and American writers of the literary mainstream. The present essay sets out to investigate the way in which three such writers —Ian McEwan, Graham Swift, and John Updike— employ allusion to/adaptations of Hamlet in their novels and what their respective stances reveal about their understanding of their role as canonical writers.

A Review on Focalization

In narratology, focalization is defined as the angle via which things are seen in the narrative world; also it is accounted as an element present in all narrative genres. As an independent discipline, focalization starts with Gerard Genette, and it undergoes various modifications from classical narratology to post-classical narratology. In fact, there are two basic domains for the discussions of focalization: 1. Genette's theory, 2. Post-Genettean approaches. Accordingly, this article aims at introducing focalization and the related notions to it, plus reviewing Genette's and post-Genettean approaches, in addition to making a background on focalization in the modernist view.
