Laboratory scale-studies on the biodegradation of a 1:1:1 weight mixture of three oxygenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ethanol, ethyl acetate, and methyl-ethyl ketone (MEK) in a biotrickling filter (BTF) were carried out using two identically sized columns, filled with different polypropylene rings. The performance of the BTFs was examined for a period of 10 months applying several operational strategies. Similar performance was obtained for both supports. Intermittent flow rate of trickling liquid was shown beneficial to improve the removal efficiency (RE). Two biotrickling filters were set up at two wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in The Netherlands to investigate their effectiveness for treatment of odorous waste gases from different sources. One biotrickling filter was installed at Nieuwe Waterweg WWTP in Hook of Holland to study the hydrogen sulfide removal from headworks waste air. Abstract A dynamic model describing styrene abatement was developed for a two-phase partitioning bioreactor operated as a biotrickling filter (TPPB-BTF). The model was built as a coupled set of two different systems of partial differential equations depending on whether an irrigation or a non-irrigation period was simulated. The maximum growth rate was previously calibrated from a conventional BTF treating styrene (Part 1). This paper considers the possibility to exploit external altitude measurements to improve the performance of a Kalman based GNSS receiver. The altitude measurements are provided by means of a peer to peer network, that is supposed to be based on the evolution of the 802.11 standard for the vehicular environment, namely the WAVE (802.11p). The performance of such a system are investigated for different characteristics of the aiding measurement and for a different number and disposals of the aiding peers. Long-term performance of peat biofilters treating ethyl acetate, toluene, and its mixture in air.

Three laboratory-scale peat biofilters were operated at 90 s empty bed residence time (EBRT) for over a year. Biodegradation of ethyl acetate, toluene, or a 1:1 mixture were investigated. In first stage, inlet concentration was progressively increased from 0.4 to 4.5 g/m3. The maximum elimination capacity (EC) found for ethyl acetate was 190 gC/m3·h, and it was not affected by toluene. The maximum EC found for toluene as a sole contaminant was 150 gC/m3·h, but the presence of ethyl acetate decreased the toluene maximum EC to 80 gC/m3·h. Abstract In this work, we develop a non-isothermal model for diesel particulate filters including exothermic and competing chemical reactions. We begin with an isothermal, single-reaction model and we gradually increase its complexity. By comparing various models, we aim at establishing the minimum degree of complexity required to effectively model the system under investigation. Based on the numerical simulations, we conclude that isothermal models are adequate only if the temperature of the catalyst is, at all times, completely below or completely above a critical temperature. Multispectral diffuse reflectance imaging and autofluorescence photo-bleaching imaging are methods that have been investigated for use in skin disorder diagnostics. In response to the ever-increasing incidence of skin cancer in light skinned populations a new device has been designed incorporating both of these methods. In this paper, we present a set of robust and efficient algorithms with O(N) cost for the following situations: object detection with a laser ranger; mobile robot pose estimation and a FastSLAM improved implementation. Objected detection is mainly based on a novel multiple line fitting method, related with walls at the environment. This method assumes that walls at the environment constitute a regular constrained angles. A line-based pose estimation method is also proposed, based on Least-Squares (LS). By using the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) an accurate take-off or landing flight path following in turbulent air is performed. The tuned up procedure employs simultaneously two different EKF: the first one estimates gust disturbances, the second one affords to determine the necessary controls displacements for rejecting those ones.
