3D Printed Palladium Catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-coupling Reactions

2020

Selective laser sintering (SLS) 3d printing was utilized to manufacture a solid catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions from polypropylene as a base material and palladium nanoparticles on silica (SilicaCat Pd(0)R815-100 by SiliCycle) as the catalytically active additive. The 3d printed catalyst showed similar activity to that of the pristine powdery commercial catalyst, but with improved practical recoverability and reduced leaching of palladium into solution. Recycling of the printed catalyst led to increase of the induction period of the reactions, attributed to the pseudo-homogeneous catalysis. The reaction is initiated by oxidative addition of aryl iodide to palladium nano…

Q-switching of an all-fiber ring laser based on in-fiber acousto-optic bandpass modulator2017

2017

Active Q-switching of an all-fiber ring laser utilizing a novel in-fiber acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter (AOTBF) is reported. The transmission characteristics of the AOTBF are controlled by amplitude modulation of the acoustic wave; the device exhibits a 3-dB power insertion loss, 0.91-nm optical bandwidth, and 28-dB nonresonant light suppression. Cavity loss modulation is achieved by full acousto-optic mode re-coupling cycle induced by traveling flexural acoustic waves. When the acoustical signal is switched on, cavity losses are reduced, and then, laser emission is generated. In addition, by varying the acoustic wave frequency, a wide wavelength tuning range of 30.7 nm is achieved f…

A New Adaptive Neural Harmonic Compensator for Inverter Fed Distributed Generation

2004

This paper deals with the command of inverters in DG (distributed generation) systems by use of linear neural networks in such a way that, with a slight upgrade of their control software, they can be used also to compensate for the harmonic distortion in the node where they are connected (local compensation), that is in the in the point of common coupling (PCC). To this purpose a neural estimator based on linear neurons (ADALINEs) has been developed which is able to act as a selective noise cancellers for each harmonic of the node voltage. The use of linear neurons permits the drawbacks of classical neural networks to be overcome and moreover the neural estimator is easy to implement, thus …

Model Predictive Control for Shunt Active Filters With Fixed Switching Frequency

2016

This paper presents a modification to the classical Model Predictive Control algorithm, named Modulated Model Predictive Control, and its application to active power filters. The proposed control is able to retain all the advantages of a Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control whilst improving the generated waveforms harmonic spectrum. In fact a modulation algorithm, based on the cost function ratio for different output vectors, is inherently included in the MPC. The cost function-based modulator is introduced and its effectiveness on reducing the current ripple is demonstrated. The presented solution provides an effective and straightforward single loop controller, maintaining an excel…

Is Active Moss Biomonitoring Comparable to Air Filter Standard Sampling?

2022

Recently, significant attention has been paid to air quality awareness and its impact on human health, especially in urban agglomerations. Many types of dust samplers for air quality monitoring are used by governmental environmental monitoring agencies. However, these techniques are associated with high costs; as a consequence, biological methods such as active moss biomonitoring are being developed. The main disadvantages of such techniques are the lack of standardization of the preparation procedures and the lack of reliable comparisons of results with data from instrumental analyses. Our study aimed to compare the results obtained from active biomonitoring with the use of three moss spec…

Abatement of styrene waste gas emission by biofilter and biotrickling filter: comparison of packing materials and inoculation procedures.

2015

The removal of styrene was studied using 2 biofilters packed with peat and coconut fibre (BF1-P and BF2-C, respectively) and 1 biotrickling filter (BTF) packed with plastic rings. Two inoculation procedures were applied: an enriched culture with strain Pseudomonas putida CECT 324 for biofilters and activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant for the BTF. Inlet loads (ILs) between 10 and 45 g m-3 h-1 and empty bed residence times (EBRTs) from 30 to 120 s were applied. At inlet concentrations ranging between 200 and 400 mg Nm-3, removal efficiencies between 70 and 95% were obtained in the 3 bioreactors. Maximum elimination capacities (ECs) of 81 and 39 g m-3 h-1 were obtained…

Migration of Leukocytes into Filters Coated Homogeneously with Immune Complexes, Antigens, Lectins or Tripeptides

1980

Cellulose nitrate filters were incubated in solutions of albumin, a chemotactically active tripeptide (f-Met-Leu-Phe), immune complexes or lectins and afterwards washed with buffer. They showed a dose-dependent increased leukocyte migration, when tested in typical Boyden chambers in comparison to filters treated only with buffer. The tripeptide, the immune complexes and the lectins were stimulatory at very low concentrations and acted inhibitory at high concentrations. Treating filters with formaldehyde or glutardialdehyde had no clear stimulatory effect. These findings extend earlier observations obtained with casein. They show that cells move very effectively on solid substrata in the abs…

Assessment of the SMAP Level-4 Surface and Root-Zone Soil Moisture Product Using In Situ Measurements

2017

International audience; The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission Level-4 Surface and Root-Zone Soil Moisture (L4_SM) data product is generated by assimilating SMAP L-band brightness temperature observations into the NASA Catchment land surface model. The L4_SM product is available from 31 March 2015 to present (within 3 days from real time) and provides 3-hourly, global, 9-km resolution estimates of surface (0-5 cm) and root-zone (0-100 cm) soil moisture and land surface conditions. This study presents an overview of the L4_SM algorithm, validation approach, and product assessment versus in situ measurements. Core validation sites provide spatially averaged surface (root zone) soil m…

Automation of Optimized Gabor Filter Parameter Selection for Road Cracks Detection

2016

International audience; Automated systems for road crack detection are extremely important in road maintenance for vehicle safety and traveler's comfort. Emerging cracks in roads need to be detected and accordingly repaired as early as possible to avoid further damage thus reducing rehabilitation cost. In this paper, a robust method for Gabor filter parameters optimization for automatic road crack detection is discussed. Gabor filter has been used in previous literature for similar applications. However, there is a need for automatic selection of optimized Gabor filter parameters due to variation in texture of roads and cracks. The problem of change of background, which in fact is road text…

Mapping and determinism of soil microbial community distribution across an agricultural landscape.

2015

Article en open access; International audience; Despite the relevance of landscape, regarding the spatial patterning of microbial communities and the relative influence of environmental parameters versus human activities, few investigations have been conducted at this scale. Here, we used a systematic grid to characterize the distribution of soil microbial communities at 278 sites across a monitored agricultural landscape of 13km(2). Molecular microbial biomass was estimated by soil DNA recovery and bacterial diversity by 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing. Geostatistics provided the first maps of microbial community at this scale and revealed a heterogeneous but spatially structured distribution…
