Complexity and interaction: comparing the development of L1 and L2

2011

In research into first and second language development, the focus has mainly been either on the formal features of learner language alone (both L1 and L2) or on the interaction between learners and their caretakers (L1) or native speaker peers (L2).These research traditions have been kept a part even though it has been widely acknowledged that both first and second languages are appropriated essentially in social interaction. This paper aims to strengthen the connection between social and formal approaches by combining interactional views with those focusing on the structural complexity of learner language. Some excerpts from L1 and L2 interaction data (in the Finnish language) are discusse…

Agent defocusing in two-participant clauses in Finnish Sign Language

2019

This article investigates what strategies are used for defocusing the agent in two-participant clauses in FinSL. The question is approached by analyzing a set of data that consists of videotaped informational texts. Several strategies for agent defocusing were found. First, the agent can simply be omitted. Second, the agent can be expressed with a pronominal pointing sign used non-referentially. Pronominal pointing signs that can be used non-referentially include at least the non-first person plural pronominal pointing sign and the first person singular pointing sign, possibly also the first person plural pointing sign. This study also suggests that constructed action is an additional, opti…

Clausal coordination in Finnish Sign Language

2016

This paper deals with the coordination of clauses in Finnish Sign Language (FinSL). Building on conversational data, the paper first shows that linking in conjunctive coordination in FinSL is primarily asyndetic, whereas in adversative and disjunctive coordination FinSL prefers syndetic linking. Secondly, the paper investigates the nonmanual prosody of coordination: nonmanual activity is shown both to mark the juncture of the coordinand clauses and to draw their contours. Finally, the paper addresses certain forms of clausal coordination in FinSL that are sign language-specific. It is suggested that the sign language-specific properties of coordination are caused both by the fact that signe…

Onko suomen ja ruotsin koodinvaihdolla kielioppia? : substantiivien ja verbien taivutus Haaparannan, Tukholman ja Helsingin kaksikielisissä keskustel…

2016

MLU and IPSyn measuring absolute complexity

2009

This article compares the results of Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) and Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn) with the structural complexity of spontaneous utterances produced by 30-month-old Finnish children in a semi-structured playing situation. The comparison was carried out in order to determine the aspects of structural complexity which can be detected with MLU and IPSyn. This research adopts the frameworks of absolute complexity together with a multidimensional view of utterance structure and, furthermore, applies it through Utterance Analysis (UA). The results of the comparison between the metrics and changes in structural complexity discovered by UA reveal that MLU and IPSyn do functi…

2022

Artikkelissa tarkastelemme Yleisten kielitutkintojen suomen kielen arvioijien (N = 44) käsityksiä suomenruotsalaisten puhujien (N = 9) oletetusta ensikielestä. Tutkimuksemme aineisto perustuu Suomen Akatemian rahoittamaan Rikkinäistä Suomea: Aksenttien arviointi yhteiskunnallisena portinvartijana (2018– 2022) -hankkeeseen, jossa tutkitaan vieraan aksentin vaikutusta suullisen kielitaidon arvioinnissa. Analysoimme sisällönanalyysin avulla arvioijien kirjallisia vastauksia liittyen puhujien ensikieleen ja siihen liittyviin perusteluihin. Artikkelissa kuvaamme, miten usein ja miksi suomen kielen arvioijat pitivät suomenruotsalaisia suomen kielen puhujia virolaisina puhujina. Arvioijat tunnisti…

Cross-lagged associations between study and work engagement dimensions during young adulthood

2014

The present four-wave longitudinal study investigated the cross-lagged associations between three study and work engagement dimensions (e.g. energy, absorption, and dedication) over the transition from post-comprehensive studies to higher education or work. Various antecedents (e.g. gender, GPA) and consequences (e.g. satisfaction in life, education and work, well-being, and educational outcomes) of the three engagement dimensions were also examined. The study is part of the longitudinal Finnish Educational Transitions (FinEdu) study, and followed 851 participants from age 17 to 23. The developmental dynamics showed that, in particular, students’ study- and work-related energy predicted fee…

2019

Introduction: Despite substantial interest in the development of health behaviors, there is limited research that has examined the longitudinal relationship between physical activity (PA) and smoking trajectories from youth to adulthood in a Finnish population. This study aimed to identify trajectories of smoking and PA for males and females, and study the relationship between these trajectories from youth to adulthood. Methods: Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to identify trajectories of smoking and PA separately for males and females among 3355 Finnish adults (52.1% females). Participants’ smoking and PA were assessed five to eight times over a 31-year period (3–18 years old at the …
