Occurrence and pathogenicity of Yersinia ruckeri at fish farms in northern and central Finland

Salmonid fish at fish farms in northern and central Finland and perch, Perca fluviatilis L., roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), and whitefish, Coregonus sp., from four lakes in central Finland were studied between 1985 and 1990 for the occurrence of Yersinia ruckeri. The bacteria were found in fish from both areas, but in most cases, only single diseased salmon, Salmo salar L., brown trout, S. trutta L., rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), whitefish and perch were encountered and were always connected with stress conditions. Temperature effects on anaesthesia with clove oil in six temperate-zone fishes

The potential use of clove oil (eugenol) as an anaesthetic for Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, brown trout Salmo trutta, rainbow trout Oncohynchus mykiss, whitefish Coregonus lavaretus, perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus was examined at 5, 10, 15 and 20°C using three anaesthetic concentrations (varying from 20 to 200 mg l -1 ) at each temperature. Substantial species differences in sensitivity to clove oil were observed, even amongst congeners, and there may be some disadvantages (slow recovery and possibly mortality) with using clove oil for 0+ year whitefish and at low temperatures for perch and roach.

Diet composition and seasonal feeding patterns of a freshwater ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis)

The Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) is one of the few freshwater seal populations worldwide. The major conservation issue of this critically endangered population is bycatch mortality. We used digestive tract content and stable isotopes (d 13 Ca ndd 15 N) to estimate the diet and seasonal feeding patterns for gaining better understanding of the seals feeding habits and potential conservation implications. The diet was similar across age groups. Phage Specificity of the Freshwater Fish Pathogen Flavobacterium columnare

ABSTRACT Flavobacteria and their phages were isolated from Finnish freshwaters and fish farms. Emphasis was placed on finding phages infecting the fish pathogen Flavobacterium columnare for use as phage therapy agents. The host ranges of the flavobacterial phages varied, phages infecting F. columnare being more host specific than the other phages.

The inclusion of vegetal raw materials in feed for fish farming has increased the risk of mycotoxin occurrence in feed, as well as in edible tissues from fish fed with contaminated feed, due to the carry-over to muscle portions. Fresh tissues from sea fishes show much higher activities of cathepsins than the corresponding mammalian tissues. The significance of these findings is discussed. There is no indication for the presence in fresh extracts of fish muscle of either proteinases with a pH optimum near neutrality or of decarboxylases for glutamic and aspartic acids. The activities of glycylglycine dipeptidase in fish muscle are found to be at the upper limit of the values obtained by other workers with mammalian tissues.

Adequate concentrations of omega 3 fatty acids (FA) may be maintained by consuming foods naturally rich in or functional foods enriched with those essential FA. We assessed the effects of an 8-week consumption of milk enriched with 400. mg of omega 3 FA on blood lipid levels and selected cardiovascular risk factors in adult healthy volunteers. Hypertriglyceridemia is frequent in diabetic and obese subjects, who are at increased risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Increased triglycerides (TG) are a hallmark of atherogenic dyslipidemia, representing a marker of atherogenic small dense low-density lipoproteins (sdlDL).
