Isotope Distributions in the Reaction ofU238withU238

Radiochemically determined cross sections $\ensuremath{\sigma}(Z, A)$ were used to construct charge and mass distributions for the reaction of 1785-MeV $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ ions with thick $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ targets. Fission of the colliding nuclei is found to dominate. For the surviving uraniumlike fragments an enhancement of yields compared to the Kr + U and Xe + U reactions is observed. The formation of heavy actinides is shown to be associated with the low-energy tails of the broad excitation energy distributions in damped collisions.

Variable masses in fission and heavy-ion collisions

With the use of the cranking formula, the coordinate-dependent mass parameters of the kinetic-energy operator in fission processes and heavy-ion collisions are calculated in the two-center oscillator model. It is shown that the reduced mass and also the classical moment of inertia are obtained for large separations of the fragments. For small separations, however, the mass parameter for the motion of the centers of mass of the fragments is larger than the reduced mass by an order of magnitude.

Fission in238U+238U collisions below the Coulomb barrier

Integral fission cross sections in the system238U+238U were measured at beam energies below the interaction barrierVC. Scattering angle dependent probabilities and integral cross sections for Coulomb fission were calculated. It is concluded that earlier observed discrepancies between measured and calculated angular distributions for the one-neutron transfer product239U cannot be explained by sequential fission. Multi-nucleon transfer induced fission is observed down to energies (0.90±0.02)×VC.

Electromagnetic and nuclear fission of238U in the reaction of 100, 500, and 1000 A�MeV208Pb with238U

The folding- and azimuthal-angle and velocity distributions for the238U fission fragments have been measured in reactions with 100, 500, and 1000 A·MeV208Pb. These distributions were used to decompose the fission cross section into its electromagnetic and nuclear components. The fraction of electromagnetic fission was found to be 0.16±0.07, 0.48±0.08, and 0.60±0.04, respectively. The electromagnetic fission cross section as a function of the208Pb nucleus energy is compared with theoretical predictions. The measured fission cross section from nuclear reactions (≈1.5 b) is approximately constant between 100 and 1000 A·MeV.

Production of Sn and Sb isotopes in high-energy neutron induced fission of natU

The first systematic measurement of neutron-induced fission yields has been performed at the upgraded IGISOL-4 facility at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The fission products from high-energy neutron-induced fission of nat U were stopped in a gas cell filled with helium buffer gas, and were online separated with a dipole magnet. The isobars, with masses in the range A = 128-133 , were transported to a tape-implantation station and identified using γ -spectroscopy. We report here the relative cumulative isotopic yields of tin (Z = 50) and the relative independent isotopic yields of antimony (Z = 51). Isomeric yield ratios were also obtained for five nuclides. Energy damping and intermediate-velocity fragment emission in peripheral Kr+Au collisions at 43 MeV/u

Abstract Triple and four-fold coincidences among fragments have been measured in the reaction 84 Kr+Au at 43 MeV/u. All events showing the projectile-like nucleus and fission fragments of the target-like nucleus, and all events with one additional intermediate-velocity fragment, were analysed in the frame of a dissipative collision and a participant-spectator model. The mechanism is basically that of a dissipative collision but the emission of the intermediate velocity fragment by the target differs from an equilibrated evaporation.

QUATERNARY FISSION

2003

Quaternary fission is a nuclear reaction where the two customary fragments from fission are accompanied by two light charged particles. The process has been investigated at the ILL, Grenoble, for thermal neutron induced fission of 233U and 235U. The light particles were identified to be α particles and H isotopes (mostly tritons). Two different types of processes could be disentangled: in one of these processes all four charged particles are born in coincidence while the second process is in fact merely a special case of ternary fission where the ternary particle decays into two charged particles before reaching the detectors.

Independent and cumulative yields of very neutron-rich nuclei in 20 MeVp- and 18–41 MeVd-induced fission ofU238

Independent and cumulative yields in nearly symmetric fission have been measured for the first time by bombarding $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ with 20-MeV protons and with 18-, 25-, and 41-MeV deuterons. Isobaric charge dispersion has been determined in the A=110, A=112, and A=114 mass chains and, from asymmetric fission, in the A=80 mass chain. The average isobaric charges in the p+U reaction were 44.01\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.20 (A=110), 45.15\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15 (A=112), and 45.74\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15 (A=114). The Study of Prompt and Delayed Muon Induced Fission; II. Mean life times of negative muons bound to 237Np, 242Pu and 244Pu

The mean life times of negative muons bound to actinide nuclei have been measured by detecting the time difference between a stopped muon and the arrival of fragments from delayed fission after muon capture. The deduced capture rates c are 1.392(4)·107/s for237Np, 1.290(7)·107/s for242Pu and 1.240(7)·107/s for244Pu. The results are compared with published data for the fission and the neutron decay channels and for the electron decay of the bound muon. Including a former measurement of c for239Pu, an isotopic dependence of the muon capture rates in the Pu isotopes is clearly observed.

Isotopic product distributions in the near symmetric mass region in proton induced fission ofU238

We have studied fission product yields using 19.8 MeV proton induced fission of a thin $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ target and the on-line mass separator IGISOL. The nonselectivity of the separation method used with respect to Z has allowed accurate determination of the yields of symmetric fission for the first time. The cumulative yields for the elements from Z=40 (Zr) up to Z=47 (Ag) have been determined from the beta- and gamma-radioactivity measurements. The independent fission product yield distributions for elements Tc, Ru, and Rh are obtained from the experimental data.
