Discharge data series of Begura de Salma River (Mallorca, Spain): January 2015-October 2018
2020
Here we provide the data set obtained as described in detail in Estrany et al. (2020, doi:10.5194/nhess-2019-304); a brief description is presented below. A hydrometric gauging station is located where the Begura de Salma River enters Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, a village located in the northeastern part of Mallorca island (Spain). The station was built by the water authority in the 1970s. After years of abandonment, in 2015 the MEDhyCON Research Group installed within the gauge house a Hobo Water Level U20L-04, which measures the water stage by 1-minute readings, accumulating 15-minute average values. The station is located at the very beginning of the concrete channel that takes the river…
Eulerian-Eulerian modelling and computational fluid dynamics simulation of wire mesh demisters in MSF plants
2014
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to focus on simulation of wire mesh demisters in multistage flash desalination (MSF) plants. The simulation is made by the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Design/methodology/approach – A steady state and two-dimensional (2D) model was developed to simulate the demister. The model employs an Eulerian-Eulerian approach to simulate the flow of water vapor and brine droplets in the demister. The computational domain included three zones, which are the vapor space above and below the demister and the demister. The demister zone was modeled as a tube bank arrange or as a porous media. Findings – Sensitivity analysis of the model showed t…
Eulerian–Lagrangian modeling and computational fluid dynamics simulation of wire mesh demisters in MSF plants
2016
Abstract This study focuses on computational fluid dynamics model (CFD) for simulation of demisters in multistage flash desalination (MSF). The Eulerian–Lagrangian model (steady-state and two-dimensional) was developed to simulate the demister. The model was used to simulate the flow of water vapor and brine droplets in the demister. The computational domain includes the following three zones: the vapor space above the demister, the vapor space below the demister, and the demister. The demister zone was modeled as tube banks. A sensitivity analysis of the model revealed that vapor velocity is the main parameter that affects demister performance. Additionally, the analysis indicated that vap…

Benzoxetes and Benzothietes ¾ Heterocyclic Analogues of Benzocyclobutene
2012
Benzo-condensed four-ring heterocycles, such as benzoxetes 1 and benzothietes 3 represent multi-purpose starting compounds for the preparation of various higher heterocyclic ring systems. The thermal or photochemical valence isomerizations between the benzenoid forms 1,3 and the higher reactive o-quinoid structures 2,4 provide the basis for the synthetic applications. On the other hand, this valence isomerization impedes in particular the generation and storage of 1 because the thermal equilibrium 1 ⇆ 2 is completely on the side of 2. Thus, the number of erroneous or questionable benzoxete structures published to date is surprisingly high. On the contrary, the thermal equilibrium 3 ⇆ 4 is o…

An Inverse Approach for the Design of the Optimal Preform Shape in Cold Forging
1998
Abstract In closed die forging the preform design plays a critical role for the success of the process: in fact it must ensure that in the finishing step the desired product is obtained without shape defects such as underfilling or folding and with a minimum material loss into the flash. In the paper an inverse approach is applied to the preform shape optimization problem: the method permits to evaluate a response function which links the set of parameters defining the preform shape with the fulfillment of the product design specifications. The proposed approach has been applied to a closed die forging process aimed to the production of a C-shape component, and has allowed to determine the …
Design And Characterization Of Automated Color Sensor System
2017
Abstract The paper presents a color sensor system that can process light reflected from a surface and produce a digital output representing the color of the surface. The end-user interface circuit requires only a 3-bit pseudo flash analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in place of the conventional/typical design comprising ADC, digital signal processor and memory. For scalability and compactness, the ADC was designed such that only two comparators were required regardless of the number of color/wavelength to be identified. The complete system design has been implemented in hardware (bread board) and fully characterized. The ADC achieved less than 0.1 LSB for both INL and DNL. The experimental r…
Simulation of stability and dynamics of multistage flash desalination
2011
gPROMS software was used to study the dynamics of a multistage flash desalination brine circulation system (MSF-BR) as a function of major operating parameters. Most of the previous studies focused on MSF-BR dynamic model development however; it gave very little information on dynamic response of the system to the most significant process independent parameters. The present model was first validated against available industrial data of different plants. System dynamics were obtained upon increasing/decreasing several of the operating parameters over a range of ± 15%. Results show that increase/decrease of the cooling seawater flow rate have limited effect on the system dynamics. Increasing/…
Steady State and Dynamic Models of Multistage Flash Desalination: A Review
2010
This article focuses on a review of literature studies on steady state and dynamic modeling of the multistage flash desalination process (MSF). The review shows that both steady state and dynamic models are based on lumped parameter approach. Differences in literature models are found in the assumptions used to model the flashing stage in addition to the correlations used to determine the heat transfer coefficients, thermodynamic losses, thermodynamic and transport properties. Interestingly, literature indicates a rapid progress made in software used for coding and solution of the model equations. The review shows a limited number of literature models for the internals of the flashing stage…
