Limiting climatic factors and habitats ofErica tetralixat the eastern edge of its distribution range

2015

We determined the limiting climatic factors, as well as the preferred habitats, of Erica tetralix L. at the eastern limit of its distribution range in the eastern Baltic region. It was found that E. tetralix in this region is a typical bog woodland plant preferring the wettest Sphagnum-rich sites. Northern Atlantic wet heath fragments, base-rich fens and species-rich Nardus grasslands were other habitats for the species. The species composition in E. tetralix habitats resembled that found in appropriate habitats within its main distribution range, although the habitats in the eastern Baltic region lack many Atlantic floristic elements characteristic of wet heath. A generalised linear model …

Sono state messe a confronto tre …

Morphological characterization, germination ecology and conservation of narrow endemic plant species of the Aeolian Islands (Sicily)

2016

This stusy is focused on four narrow endemic species of the Aeolian fora: Anthemis aeolica, Erysimum brulloi, Cytisus aeolicus and Silene hicesiae. Morphological characterization of seeds, seed germination and dormancy regulation have been investigated for these species.

Peat florulas in the Madonie Regional Park (Sicily)

2009

The floristic exploration of the eastern slopes of the Madonie Mountains in Sicily, carried out between 1975 and 1980, resulted in the discovery of several hydromorphic environments characterized by a thick peaty horizon. Locally named “margiu” or “triemula”, depending on the lower or higher depth, they host plant communities characterized by some species of Juncus and Carex together with acidophilous bryophytes including some species of Sphagnum. Their ecology as well as their flora and vegetation have been studied (Petronici et al. 1978). In some localities fossil pollens have also been examined (Bertolani Marchetti et al. 1984). Floristic analyses pointed out some phytogeographical patte…

Effetti del portinnesto sulla produttività e sulla qualità dell'anguria.

2010

The research aims to investigate the effects of different rootstocks on productive and qualitative aspects of two watermelon cultivars: Dumara, that produces big fruits and Minirossa that produces smaller fruits. For each cultivar, a randomized complete-block design was used with 3 replications to compare the following six grafting combinations: grafted plants into five rootstocks (Elsi, RS 841, Shintosa, Lagenaria corta, Anguria selvatica) and ungrafted plants. The highest yield of both cultivars was obtained with RS 841 while the lowest was observed with not grafted plants and grafted on elsi. However, using Elsi as rootstock, the plants gave fruits of greatest size. the best quality para…

Micropropagazione di Thymus capitatus

2011

Thymus capitatus is a compact woody shrub, endemic to the Mediterranean region, with attractive pink flowers. Although conventional vegetative propagation of T. capitatus is currently used, micropropagation could be effective for rapid mass propagation of selected clones and would preserve wild plants. Shoot tips of T. capitatus cultured on a gelled MS medium, supplemented with 0.4 mg l-1 2-iP, were used as primary explants to establish in vitro culture. Axillary shoots produced on uncontaminated explants were excised and subcultured to increase the stock of shoot cultures. To determine the optimal medium for shoot multiplication, increasing concentrations (0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6 e 3.2 mg l-1) of…

Live imaging of developmental processes in a living meristem of Davidia involucrata (Nyssaceae).

2014

Morphogenesis in plants is usually reconstructed by scanning electron microscopy and histology of meristematic structures. These techniques are destructive and require many samples to obtain a consecutive series of states. Unfortunately, using this methodology the absolute timing of growth and complete relative initiation of organs remain obscure. To overcome this limitation, an in vivo observational method based on Epi-Illumination Light Microscopy (ELM) was developed and tested with a male inflorescence meristem (floral unit) of the handkerchief tree Davidia involucrata Baill. (Nyssaceae). We asked whether the most basal flowers of this floral unit arise in a basipetal sequence or, altern…

Aquatic Macrophytes Occurrence in Mediterranean Farm Ponds: Preliminary Investigations in North-Western Sicily (Italy)

2021

Mediterranean wetlands are severely affected by habitat degradation and related loss of biodiversity. In this scenario, the wide number of artificial farm ponds can play a significant role in the biodiversity conservation of aquatic flora. In the present contribution we show the preliminary results of a study on Mediterranean farm ponds of north-western Sicily (Italy), aimed to investigating the environmental factors linked to the occurrence of submerged macrophytes (vascular plants and charophytes). We studied the aquatic flora of 30 ponds and determined the chemical and isotopic composition of their water bodies on a subset of the most representative 10 sites. Results show that (1) farm p…
