Electrophysiological and behavioural responses of the housefly to “sweet” volatiles of the flowers of Caralluma europaea (Guss.) N.E. Br.

2013

In sapromyiophilous plants, up to date, long range attraction of fly pollinators has been thoroughly investigated and attributed to ‘‘fetid’’ floral compounds, while the ‘‘sweet’’ floral scent fraction has not been spe- cifically investigated and its role has received little atten- tion. The aim of the present study was to verify if terpenoids, which are the main compounds of the floral bouquet of Caralluma europaea, play a role in the attrac- tion of its pollinator Musca domestica. Terpinolene, a- terpinene and linalool, described as the three main volatiles of the flowers of C. europaea, were evaluated in electro- physiological investigations and blends of these com- pounds as well as the…

2011

The article focuses on an unknown phenomenon developed within the frame of the Counter-reformation Italy, in which interact the Catholic faith and a sort of transfer from painting to literature. At the time, the Latin-American flower maracock (maracuja), renamed granadilla by the Spanish conquistadores, was transformed by the Jesuits into Flos passionis/passionflower, whose components were forced to represent Christ crucifixion. From 1608 to the 1660s, priests and poets, like the well-known G. Botero and G. B. Marino, wrote poems on the passionflower on the basis of some unreal images spread by the Jesuits. Aiming at experiencing a new form of ancient ékfrasis, they had described the Passio…

Diet and Immunosenescence

2013

Ageing is a systemic condition leading to a gradual loss of molecular and cellular fidelity. A feature of ageing is immunosenescence, consisting in several modifications that increase morbidity and mortality in elderly. Environment, genetic background, immune system, and intestinal microbiota play a fundamental role in immunosenescence. The development of a chronic, low-grade, inflammatory status, known as “inflamm-ageing,” is a typical aspect of immunosenescence mostly due to the pro-inflammatory cytokine production linked to the chronic antigenic load. Nutrition can act on ageing, immunity, and health in general. Unbalanced diet with an insufficient intake of micro- and macronutrient and …

From gut microflora imbalance to mycobacteria infection: is there a relationship with chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases?

2011

The gut of a healthy adult harbours a myriad of different microbial species. It is estimated that approximately 10 14 are present in total bacterial colony forming units (CFU). Each colony colonizes a specific intestinal tract. In healthy adult, the main control of intestinal bacterial colonization occurs through gastric acidity but also other factors can influence the intestinal microenvironment such as pH, temperature, competition among different bacterial strains, peristalsis, drugs, radiotherapy and much more. Impaired microbial homeostasis leads to an alteration of the permeability of tissue, together with the activation of the intestinal immune system MALT (mucosal associated lymphoid…
