Glucose measurement from different skin areas might be influenced by changes in skin texture due to several environmental confounders. Our study was performed to investigate the effect of changes in ambient temperature on skin thickness and microvascular skin blood flow in subjects with and without diabetes at the lower forearm.Thirteen subjects with diabetes and seven without diabetes participated in the study. The investigations were performed in a temperature- and humidity-controlled climatic chamber (EMPA, St. Gallen, Switzerland). Cerebral blood flow in autogenic training and hypnosis.

In 12 healthy volunteers with at least an experience of six months in autogenic training (AT), the cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured at rest, in AT and in hypnosis (H). The results were correlated with individual test profiles. The cortical flow pattern at rest of our AT trained volunteers did not show the hyperfrontality which is described in the literature. This may be interpreted as an effect of better and habitualized relaxation in long trained AT practitioners. This flow pattern corresponds to the low grades of neuroticism and aggressivity found in the tests. Background Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique currently used in the treatment of many pathologies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential effect of acupuncture on “in vivo” variations in oral microcirculation in healthy subjects. Methods An exploratory study was conducted on 40 healthy subjects: 20 cases (mean 55.90, SD 16.04) and 20 controls (mean 51, SD 11.91). Videocapillaroscopy was used to detect variations in oral microcirculation. This method permits an accurate and non-invasive in vivo study of the capillaries of the oral mucous. Skeletal muscle blood flow and flow heterogeneity during dynamic and isometric exercise in humans

The effects of dynamic and intermittent isometric knee extension exercises on skeletal muscle blood flow and flow heterogeneity were studied in seven healthy endurance-trained men. Regional muscle blood flow was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) and an [15O]H2O tracer, and electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded in the quadriceps femoris (QF) muscle during submaximal intermittent isometric and dynamic exercises. QF blood flow was 61% ( P = 0.002) higher during dynamic exercise. Interestingly, flow heterogeneity was 13% ( P = 0.024) lower during dynamic compared with intermittent isometric exercise. CT-guided stereotactic biopsy aided by Doppler ultrasonic vascular monitoring

The use of a 20 MHz pulsed Doppler technique during stereotactic brain tumour biopsies is described. By means of a miniaturized ultrasonic probe the tissue planned for biopsy was investigated for vessel signals. Out of 41 patients, with this technique a flow-pulse curve in front of the biopsy cannula was registered in 14 cases. In 9 cases one pulse curve was determined and in 5 cases two or more flow curves were found, indicating the presence of arterial vessels. The depth of the vessels signal could be localized and this area avoided for biopsy sampling. In a series of 41 stereotactic biopsies carried out in this way there was no intra-operative haemorrhage or postoperative haematoma.

This study was performed to explore whether and how alpha(2)-receptor stimulation mediates this vasodilation. We investigated 11 healthy subjects in 33 dermal microdialysis (MD) sessions. In order to investigate whether hypertension-related structural vascular changes may be influenced by antihypertensive treatment, 10 patients were studied suffering from essential arterial hypertension, five males and five females, aged between 34 and 61 years (mean age: 46.9 +/- 8.13 years). All patients received a placebo for 1 week and then captopril, 75 mg b.i.d. for 3 months.
