The ability to predict the consequences of fluctuating environments on species distribution and extinction often relies on determining the tolerances of species or genotypes in different constant environments (i.e. determining tolerance curves). However, very little is known about the suitability of measurements made in constant environments to predict the level of adaptation to rapidly fluctuating environments. Quantum gap and spin-wave excitations in the Kitaev model on a triangular lattice

We study the effects of quantum fluctuations on the dynamical generation of a gap and on the evolution of the spin-wave spectra of a frustrated magnet on a triangular lattice with bond-dependent Ising couplings, analog of the Kitaev honeycomb model. The quantum fluctuations lift the subextensive degeneracy of the classical ground-state manifold by a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism. Nearest-neighbor chains remain decoupled and the surviving discrete degeneracy of the ground state is protected by a hidden model symmetry. We show how the four-spin interaction, emergent from the fluctuations, generates a spin gap shifting the nodal lines of the linear spin-wave spectrum to finite energies.

Dispersion Interaction between Two Hydrogen Atoms in a Static Electric Field

We consider the dispersion interaction between two ground-state hydrogen atoms, interacting with the quantum electromagnetic field in the vacuum state, in the presence of an external static electric field, both in the nonretarded and in the retarded Casimir-Polder regime. We show that the presence of the external field strongly modifies the dispersion interaction between the atoms, changing its space dependence. Vacuum energy densities of a field in a cavity with a mobile boundary

We consider the zero-point field fluctuations, and the related field energy densities, inside a one-dimensional and a three-dimensional cavity with a mobile wall. The mechanical degrees of freedom of the mobile wall are described quantum mechanically and they are fully included in the overall system dynamics. In this optomechanical system, the field and the wall can interact with each other through the radiation pressure on the wall, given by the photons inside the cavity or even by vacuum fluctuations. Backreaction in Acoustic Black Holes

The backreaction equations for the linearized quantum fluctuations in an acoustic black hole are given. The solution near the horizon, obtained within a dimensional reduction, indicates that acoustic black holes, unlike Schwarzschild ones, get cooler as they radiate phonons. They show remarkable analogies with near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes.

Spatial correlations of field observables in two half-spaces separated by a movable perfect mirror

We consider a system of two cavities separated by a reflecting boundary of finite mass that is free to move, and bounded to its equilibrium position by a harmonic potential. This yields an effective mirror-field interaction, as well as an effective interaction between the field modes mediated by the movable boundary. Two massless scalar fields are defined in each cavity. Space and Time Averaged Quantum Stress Tensor Fluctuations

We extend previous work on the numerical diagonalization of quantum stress tensor operators in the Minkowski vacuum state, which considered operators averaged in a finite time interval, to operators averaged in a finite spacetime region. Since real experiments occur over finite volumes and durations, physically meaningful fluctuations may be obtained from stress tensor operators averaged by compactly supported sampling functions in space and time. Ce chapitre vise à fournir une vue de l'évolution des idées monétaires dans l'Europe moderne. Il s'alimente notamment des textes des auteurs du présent livre pour en dégager quelques leçons. Dans un premier temps, il discutera du sens du substantif " mercantilisme " tel qu'il a été construit depuis le milieu du dix-huitième siècle : examiner les fondements historiques de cette notion permettra d'en montrer les impasses.
