Viscosity Arrhenius parameters correlation: extension from pure to binary fluid mixtures

2015

Knowledge of fluids’ physicochemical properties is mandatory for the design and optimisation of industrial processes and products. A data quantity of most importance, in this regard, turns out to be the value of fluid viscosity. Many empirical and semi-empirical formulas have been proposed in the literature to describe the viscosity of pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures. Recently, an interesting equation is proposed for pure solvents correlating the two parameters in the viscosity Arrhenius-type equation, namely the activation energy (Ea) and the pre-exponential factor (As). This paper aims to extend the said correlation to binary liquid mixtures. To achieve this purpose, statistical m…

Bio-predictive tablet disintegration: Effect of water diffusivity, fluid flow, food composition and test conditions

2013

Abstract Food intake may delay tablet disintegration. Current in vitro methods have little predictive potential to account for such effects. The effect of a variety of factors on the disintegration of immediate release tablets in the gastrointestinal tract has been identified. They include viscosity of the media, precipitation of food constituents on the surface of the tablet and reduction of water diffusivity in the media as well as changes in the hydrodynamics in the surrounding media of the solid dosage form. In order to improve the predictability of food affecting the disintegration of a dosage form, tablet disintegration in various types of a liquefied meal has been studied under stati…

Extended fractional-order Jeffreys model of viscoelastic hydraulic cylinder

2020

A novel modeling approach for viscoelastic hydraulic cylinders, with negligible inertial forces, is proposed, based on the extended fractional-order Jeffreys model. Analysis and physical reasoning for the parameter constraints and order of the fractional derivatives are provided. Comparison between the measured and computed frequency response functions and time domain transient response argues in favor of the proposed four-parameter fractional-order model.

Experimental and Numerical Study on the Flow Field and Friction Factor in a Pressurized Corrugated Pipe

2015

An experimental campaign including measurement of pressure drops and velocity profiles was conducted on the pressurized flow in a commercial corrugated pipe. The results show that the empirical graphs suggested by Morris in the fifties may produce inaccurate assessments of the friction factor, in particular, for low Reynolds numbers. The experimental data was then reproduced by means of a numerical model with the large eddy simulation (LES) technique. The friction factor behavior for low and relatively high Reynolds numbers was thus investigated. The numerical simulations were in good agreement with the experimental results, showing the LES suitability to predict the effect of the pipe wall…

Derivation of Models for Thin Sprays from a Multiphase Boltzmann Model

2017

We shall review the validation of a class of models for thin sprays where a Vlasov type equation is coupled to an hydrodynamic equation of Navier–Stokes or Stokes type. We present a formal derivation of these models from a multiphase Boltzmann system for a binary mixture: under suitable assumptions on the collision kernels and in appropriate asymptotics (resp. for the two different limit models), we prove the convergence of solutions to the multiphase Boltzmann model to distributional solutions to the Vlasov–Navier–Stokes or Vlasov–Stokes system. The proofs are based on the procedure followed in Bardos et al. (J Stat Phys 63:323–344 (1991), [2]) and explicit evaluations of the coupling term…

Direct numerical simulations of creeping to early turbulent flow in unbaffled and baffled stirred tanks

2018

Abstract It has been known for a long time that the fluid flow and several global quantities, such as the power and pumping numbers, are about the same in baffled and unbaffled mechanically stirred vessels at low Reynolds numbers, but bifurcate at some intermediate Re and take drastically different values in fully turbulent flow. However, several details are not yet completely understood, notably concerning the relation of this bifurcation with the flow features and the transition to turbulence. In order to shed light on these issues, computational fluid dynamics was employed to predict the flow field in two vessels stirred by a six-bladed Rushton turbine at Reynolds numbers from 0.2 to 600…

A High-Resolution Penalization Method for large Mach number Flows in the presence of Obstacles

2009

International audience; A penalization method is applied to model the interaction of large Mach number compressible flows with obstacles. A supplementary term is added to the compressible Navier-Stokes system, seeking to simulate the effect of the Brinkman-penalization technique used in incompressible flow simulations including obstacles. We present a computational study comparing numerical results obtained with this method to theoretical results and to simulations with Fluent software. Our work indicates that this technique can be very promising in applications to complex flows.

A prospect for computing in porous materials research: Very large fluid flow simulations

2016

Abstract Properties of porous materials, abundant both in nature and industry, have broad influences on societies via, e.g. oil recovery, erosion, and propagation of pollutants. The internal structure of many porous materials involves multiple scales which hinders research on the relation between structure and transport properties: typically laboratory experiments cannot distinguish contributions from individual scales while computer simulations cannot capture multiple scales due to limited capabilities. Thus the question arises how large domain sizes can in fact be simulated with modern computers. This question is here addressed using a realistic test case; it is demonstrated that current …

Smoothed particles hydrodynamics numerical simulations of droplets walking on viscous vibrating liquid

2016

We study the phenomenon of the "walking droplet", by means of numerical fluid dynamics simulations using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics numerical method. This phenomenon occurs when a millimetric drop is released on the surface of an oil of the same composition, contained in a tank and subjected to vertical oscillations of frequency and amplitude very close to the Faraday instability threshold. At appropriate values of the parameters of the system under study, the oil droplet jumps permanently on the surface of the vibrating liquid forming a localized wave-particle system, reminding the behaviour of a wave particle quantum system as suggested by de Broglie. In our study, we made releva…
