Speciation of trialkyltin(IV) cations in natural fluids

2004

The hydrolysis of (CH(3))(3)Sn(+), (C(2)H(5))(3)Sn(+) and (C(3)H(7))(3)Sn(+) has been studied in a Synthetic Seawater (SSW) ionic medium simulating the major composition of natural seawater, at different salinities (5 less than or equal to S less than or equal to 45), and at t = 25 degreesC. Interactions with anionic components of SSW, considered as single sea salt, are determined by means of a complex formation model. By potentiometric measurements (ISE-H(+) and ISE-F(-) electrodes), the model has been extended to also consider interactions of organotins with carbonate and fluoride ions, which are other important components of seawater. Literature and new values of hydrolysis constants in …

Effect of Mycoplasma agalactiae mastitis on milk production and composition in Valle dell Belice dairy sheep

2019

Contagious agalactia (CA), a disease caused by Mycoplasma agalactiae and other pathogenic mycoplasmas, is a well-known multietiological syndrome affecting dairy breeds of sheep and goats in the Mediterranean basin. The aim of this work was to study the effect on milk production and composition of mastitis caused by M. agalactiae in Valle del Belice dairy sheep. All ewes were manually milked twice daily and the milk from both daily milking was analysed for milk composition and somatic cell counts. Moreover the morning milk samples were collected aseptically from each animal for bacteriological analyses. A mixed linear model was utilised to consider milk production and composition between ani…

Generalized heat equation and transitions between different heat-transport regimes in narrow stripes

2019

Abstract In the framework of weakly nonlocal thermodynamic theory, in this paper we derive a nonlocal and nonlinear heat-transport equation beyond the Fourier law by means of thermodynamic considerations in agreement with the second law. The obtained equation describes the transitions among different heat-transport regimes. The stability of the solution of that equation is also analyzed in a special case.

Measurement of the energy distribution of electrons escaping minimum-B ECR plasmas

2017

The measurement of the electron energy distribution (EED) of electrons escaping axially from a minimum-B electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) is reported. The experimental data were recorded with a room-temperature 14 GHz ECRIS at the JYFL accelerator laboratory. The electrons escaping through the extraction mirror of the ion source were detected with a secondary electron amplifier placed downstream from a dipole magnet serving as an electron spectrometer with 500 eV resolution. It was discovered that the EED in the range of 5–250 keV is strongly non-Maxwellian and exhibits several local maxima below 20 keV energy. It was observed that the most influential ion source operating pa…

High-Precision Measurements of the Bound Electron’s Magnetic Moment

2017

Highly charged ions represent environments that allow to study precisely one or more bound electrons subjected to unsurpassed electromagnetic fields. Under such conditions, the magnetic moment (g-factor) of a bound electron changes significantly, to a large extent due to contributions from quantum electrodynamics. We present three Penning-trap experiments, which allow to measure magnetic moments with ppb precision and better, serving as stringent tests of corresponding calculations, and also yielding access to fundamental quantities like the fine structure constant α and the atomic mass of the electron. Additionally, the bound electrons can be used as sensitive probes for properties of the …

The TRAPSENSOR facility: an open-ring 7 tesla Penning trap for laserbased precision experiments

2019

APenning-trap facility for high-precision mass spectrometry based on a novel detection method has been built. This method consists in measuring motional frequencies of singly-charged ions trapped in strong magnetic fields through the fluorescence photons from laser-cooled 40Ca+ ions, to overcome limitations faced in electronic single-ion detection techniques. The key element of this facility is an open-ring Penning trap coupled upstream to a preparation Penning trap similar to those used at Radioactive Ion Beam facilities. Here we present a full characterization of the trap and demonstrate motional frequency measurements of trapped ions stored by applying external radiofrequency fields in r…

Fibrillar polymeric patches suitable for wound healing

2018

Multilayered scaffolds can be designed to improve soft material applicability for regenerative medicine purposes. Excellent results can be obtained by combining the main characteristics of the biopolymers and giving a specific function to each layer. A microfluidic-assisted electrospinning process is an elegant arrangement between two fiber fabrication techniques that defines finely every portion of an electrospun scaffold. Unlike classic electrospinning technique, multiple flows can be carefully monitored and separated in real time using microfluidic sensors. This method allows users to establish anisotropic properties to scaffolds, in other words it is possible to modulate gradients by ch…

The Effect of High Parathyroid Hormone Concentration on Calcitonin in Patients with Primary Hyperparathyroidism2)

2009

Serum calcitonin (CT), parathyroid hormone (PTH), and calcium levels were measured in 23 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. PTH was determined by a midregion (M-RIA) and a carboxyl-terminal (C-RIA) specific PTH-RIA. Only 2 patients had elevated CT levels. In contrast to the findings in 46 healthy controls, the CT levels did not correlate with calcium levels. Patients who had the highest iPTH values showed a negative correlation between CT and iPTH (M-RIA (n = 7): R = -1.0000, p less than 0.001; C-RIA (n = 13): R = -0.5604, p less than 0.05). The results of the C-RIA were subtracted from those of the M-RIA. In 12 patients with the highest levels of intact PTH (M-RIA - C-RIA), serum P…
