Calix[4]arene-functionalized naphthalene and perylene imide dyes.

2002

[reaction: see text] Calix[4]arenes bearing one, two, or four 1,8-naphthyl imide groups at the wide rim and bis-calix[4]arenes connected via perylene-bisimide dye spacers have been synthesized. The low-temperature NMR spectrum of the tetranaphthylimide suggests, in agreement with a crystal structure, a C2-symmetrical pinched cone conformation stabilized via face-to-face pi-pi interactions between opposite naphthylimide groups. UV-vis and fluorescence studies have been carried out for the perylene bis-calix[4]arene dyes.

Fluorescence Lifetime of a Single Molecule as an Observable of Meta-Basin Dynamics in Fluids Near the Glass Transition

2006

Using single molecule spectroscopy, we show that the fluorescence lifetime trajectories of single probe molecules embedded in a glass-forming polymer melt exhibit strong fluctuations of a hopping character. Using molecular dynamics simulations targeted to explain these experimental observations, we show that the lifetime fluctuations correlate strongly with the average square displacement function of the matrix particles. The latter observable is a direct probe of the meta-basin transitions in the potential energy landscape of glass-forming liquids. We thus show here that single molecule experiments can provide detailed microscopic information on system properties that hitherto have been ac…

Boolean operations mediated by an ion-pair receptor of a multi-readout molecular logic gate

2013

A heteroditopic BODIPY dye that performs all basic Boolean operations with a cation (K+) and an anion (F-) as inputs and absorption, transmission and fluorescence as outputs is described. The molecular logic gate can also act as a digital comparator between the inputs.

FISH mapping of the sex-reversal region on human chromosome 9p in two XY females and in primates

2000

Accumulating evidence suggests that haploinsufficiency of a dosage-sensitive gene(s) in human chromosome 9p24.3 is responsible for the failure of testicular development and feminisation in XY patients with monosomy for 9p. We have used molecular cytogenetic methods to characterise the sex-reversing 9p deletions in two XY females. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) with YACs from the critical 9p region containing an evolutionarily conserved sex-determining gene, DMRT1, is a very fast and reliable assay for patient screening. Comparative YAC mapping on great ape and Old and New World monkey chromosomes demonstrated that the critical region was moved from an interstitial position on the…

Toxicological properties of two fluorescent carbon quantum dots with onion ring morphology and their usefulness as bioimaging agents

2016

In the present work, two carbon quantum dots with onion ring morphology, C-NOR and C-NOR(Eu) with an average size of 40 nm differing in the absence or presence of Eu3+ as Lewis acids during their preparation were synthesized and fully characterized by several techniques. These nanoparticles can be internalized into human HeLa and Hep3B carcinoma cells where they exhibit interesting photoluminescent properties, in the same manner as in solution, confirming their utility as bioimaging agents. To address this possibility, a complete in vitro toxicological study has been performed here. Viability, proliferation, apoptosis and oxidative stress assessments upon limited or continuous exposure were…

Distribution of Cytoglobin in the Mouse Brain

2016

Cytoglobin (Cygb) is a vertebrate globin with so far poorly defined function. It is expressed in the fibroblast cell-lineage but has also been found in neurons. Here we provide, using immunohistochemistry, a detailed study on the distribution of Cygb in the mouse brain. While Cygb is a cytoplasmic protein in active cells of the supportive tissue, in neurons it is located in the cytoplasm and the nucleus. We found the expression of Cygb in all brain regions, although only a fraction of the neurons was Cygb-positive. Signals were of different intensity ranging from faint to very intense. Telencephalic neurons in all laminae of the cerebral cortex (CCo), in the olfactory bulb (in particular pe…

A multi-disciplinary investigation of the "Tavolette fuori posto" of the "Hall of Barons" wooden ceiling of the "Steri" (Palermo, Italy)

2016

Abstract Four painted slabs, called “Tavolette fuori posto” (Slabs out of place), of Galleria Interdisciplinare Regionale della Sicilia — Palazzo Abatellis (Palermo, Italy) were investigated with multi-techniques approach by using noninvasive and micro-destructive techniques. The slabs presumably belong to the decoration of the wooden ceiling of the “Hall of Barons” of the Palazzo Chiaramonte, said Steri, in Palermo (Italy). The aim of this study was to investigate the kind of materials used by the artist, the executive technique and the state of conservation. Pigments, binders and trace of previous restorations were identified. The results were used to properly plan the restoration interve…

Reliable fluorescence technique to detect the antibiotic colistin, a possible environmental threat due to its overuse.

2022

AbstractColistin, considered a drug of last resort as it is effective towards multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. Oral administration of colistin in the poultry industry is a common practice, not only to prevent and reduce bacterial infections, but also as a rapid-growth promoter. Long-term exposure to any antibiotic will eventually lead to the development of bacterial resistance towards all antibiotics through various mechanisms in the physiological system and environment. Chicken is the most consumed source of animal protein for humans throughout the world. In addition, the manure of poultry, containing traces of the used antibiotics, is being used in farming. Exposure…

A device for multimodal imaging of skin

2013

A compact prototype device for diagnostic imaging of skin has been developed and tested. Polarized LED light at several spectral regions is used for illumination, and round skin spot of diameter 30mm is imaged by a CMOS sensor via crossoriented polarizing filter. Four consecutive imaging series are performed: (1) RGB image at white LED illumination for revealing subcutaneous structures; (2) four spectral images at narrowband LED illumination (450nm, 540nm, 660nm, 940nm) for mapping of the main skin chromophores; (3) video-imaging under green LED illumination for mapping of skin blood perfusion; (4) autofluorescence video-imaging under UV (365nm) LED irradiation for mapping of the skin fluor…
