This study reports the results of twelve trace elements in twenty-seven International geochemical reference samples (IGRS) (15 from Japan, 7 from South Africa, 4 from France and 1 from U.S.A.). Similarly, ten major elements were also determined in twenty-three GRS (15 from Japan, 5 from South Africa, 2 from France and 1 from U.S.A.). Whenever possible, the results are compared with literature values for these GRS.

AbstractEleven trace elements (Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, V, Zn) were quantitatively determined in hen egg samples collected from different poultry housing types (large-scale poultry farms, organic farms and domestic farms) over the territory of Latvia. Samples were wet digested and quantitatively analysed by total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF). SummaryGene positioning and regulation of nuclear architecture are thought to influence gene expression. Here, we show that, in mouse olfactory neurons, silent olfactory receptor (OR) genes from different chromosomes converge in a small number of heterochromatic foci. These foci are OR exclusive and form in a cell-type-specific and differentiation-dependent manner. The aggregation of OR genes is developmentally synchronous with the downregulation of lamin b receptor (LBR) and can be reversed by ectopic expression of LBR in mature olfactory neurons. ABSTRACT The minor capsid protein L2 of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) has multiple functions during the viral life cycle. Although L2 is required for effective invasion and morphogenesis, only a few cellular interaction partners are known so far. Using yeast two-hybrid screening, we identified the transcription factor TBX2 as a novel interaction partner of HPV type 16 (HPV16) L2. We have recently shown that core histones are glutaminyl substrates for transglutaminase (TGase) and that when native nucleosome cores are incubated with monodansylcadaverine (DNC) as donor amine, this fluorescent probe is incorporated into Gln5 and Gln19 of H3 and in Gln22 of H2B [Ballestar et al. (1996) J. Biol. Chem. 271, 18817-18825]. In the present paper, we report that the cause by which Gln22 of H2B is modified in nucleosomes but not in the free histone is the interaction of the region containing that glutamine with DNA. Chlorophyll a fluorescence in transplants of Parmelia sulcata Taylor near a power station (La Robla, León, Spain)

Healthy thalli of Parmelia sulcata Taylor were transplanted to 8 localities in the surroundings of a power station (La Robla, León, Spain), the sole pollution source in the region. Changes in chlorophyll a fluorescence were monitored in the transplants 12 months, 18 months and 24 months after transplantation. Statistically significant differences were observed in the ratio of variable to maximal fluorescence, non-photochemical fluorescence quenching and vitality index. The decrease in fluorescence parameters was higher in the localities of Cuadros and Rabanal de Fenar, which are situated a few kilometres away from the power station and in the same direction as the prevailing winds.

Here we show that the cytosine-5 methyltransferase DNMT2 controls retrotransposon silencing in Drosophila somatic cells. In Drosophila, significant DNMT2-dependent DNA methylation occurs during early embryogenesis. Suppression of white gene silencing by Mt2 (Dnmt2) null mutations in variegated P[w(+)] element insertions identified functional targets of DNMT2. The enzyme controls DNA methylation at retrotransposons in early embryos and initiates histone H4K20 trimethylation catalyzed by the SUV4-20 methyltransferase.
