A new selective fluorogenic probe for trivalent cations.

[EN] A new selective chromo-fluorogenic probe for Fe 3+, Cr 3+ and Al 3+ is reported. Detection limits are in the ¿M range and the fluorogenic sensing ability could be observed by the naked eye when illuminated with UV-light. No response is observed with divalent cations. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

[Cr(ddpd) 2 ] 3+ : A Molecular, Water‐Soluble, Highly NIR‐Emissive Ruby Analogue

Bright, long-lived emission from first-row transition-metal complexes is very challenging to achieve. Herein, we present a new strategy relying on the rational tuning of energy levels. With the aid of the large N-Cr-N bite angle of the tridentate ligand ddpd (N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dipyridine-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine) and its strong σ-donating capabilities, a very large ligand-field splitting could be introduced in the chromium(III) complex [Cr(ddpd)2](3+), that shifts the deactivating and photoreactive (4)T2 state well above the emitting (2)E state. Probing the electronic state of a single coronene molecule by the emission from proximate fluorophores.

We measured electronic transitions of the 2D graphene-type molecule hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) at the single-molecule level. The large intersystem crossing rate and long triplet state lifetime in the range of seconds are prohibitive for direct single-molecule observation. By covalently coupling fluorescent acceptor molecules (perylenecarboximide, PMI) to HBC, efficient singlet energy transfer gives rise to strong PMI fluorescence. Confocal single-molecule fluorescence microscopy with two excitation colours matching the HBC and PMI transition frequencies, respectively, was conducted. Eight million years of maintained heterozygosity in chromosome homologs of cercopithecine monkeys

In the Cercopithecini ancestor two chromosomes, homologous to human chromosomes 20 and 21, fused to form the Cercopithecini specific 20/21 association. In some individuals from the genus Cercopithecus, this association was shown to be polymorphic for the position of the centromere, suggesting centromere repositioning events. We set out to test this hypothesis by defining the evolutionary history of the 20/21 association in four Cercopithecini species from three different genera. IDENTIFICATION OF LECTINS IN THE KINETIDS OFTETRAHYMENA PYRIFORMIS

Previously we described lectin-like molecules in the ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis; by application of synthetic neoglycoconjugates it is now shown that T. pyriformis contains considerable amounts of both a beta-D-glucose- and a lactose-specific lectin. No evidence for the presence of alpha-D-mannose-, alpha-D-galactose- or of alpha-L-fucose-specific lectins could be obtained. The two lectins, identified in T. pyriformis, are associated with the kinetids. During cell division the lectins disappear or become masked in the fission furrow. Abstract The potential of fluorescence measurement and circular dichroism spectroscopy (CDSP) to evaluate the interaction between cyclodextrins (CDs) (CD cavity size, concentration, pH, reaction time, and temperature as well as different side chain groups) and α-galactosidase was evaluated. A strong relationship was observed between α-galactosidase fluorescence intensity and CD cavity size, concentration, pH, reaction time, and temperature as well as different side chain groups. Recognizing the complexity of the fibrillogenesis process provides a solid ground for the development of therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing or inhibiting protein-protein aggregation. Amyloid fibrils formation and amorphous aggregation in Concanavalin A

We here report an experimental study on the thermal aggregation process of concanavalin A, a protein belonging to the legume lectins family. The aggregation process and the involved conformational changes of the protein molecules were followed by means of fluorescence techniques, light scattering, circular dichroism, zeta potential measurements and atomic force microscopy.
