Association of MR-proadrenomedullin with cardiovascular risk factors and subclinical cardiovascular disease.
2012
Abstract Aims and background Midregional proadrenomedullin (MR-proADM) is a protein, which exerts various effects on the cardiovascular system. Recent studies underscored its prognostic implications in patients with acute dyspnea and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, we aimed to determine the distribution of MR-proADM in the general population and to reveal potential associations of MR-proADM with cardiovascular risk factors and measures of subclinical cardiovascular disease. Methods and results MR-proADM plasma concentrations were determined in individuals of the population-based cohort of the Gutenberg Health Study ( N = 5000) using a commercially available fluoroimmunoassay. Individua…
Running-induced muscle injury and myocellular enzyme release in rats
1994
The relationships and time course of exercise-induced muscle damage, estimated by beta-glucuronidase activity and microscopy, to muscle swelling, estimated by muscle water content and microscopy, and to the serum activity of creatine kinase (CK) and the concentration of carbonic anhydrase III were studied in rats 2, 12, 48, and 96 h after 90 min of intermittent running uphill (+13.5 degrees) or downhill (-13.5 degrees) at a speed of 17 m/min. The injury was more pronounced in soleus after uphill running and in the red parts of quadriceps femoris and in the white part of vastus lateralis after downhill running, whereas triceps brachii was not damaged. Increase in muscle water content preced…
Bioanalysis of digoxin and its metabolites using direct serum injection combined with liquid chromatography and on-line immunochemical detection.
1994
Abstract An automated dual-column liquid chromatographic assay for digoxin is described. Serum samples are directly injected onto a restricted-access solid-phase extraction support. After liquid chromatographic (LC) separation on a C18 analytical column, antigenic analytes are detected by means of post-column immunochemical detection (ICD) using fluorescein-labelled antibodies against digoxigenin. The detection limit of this assay is 160 pg/ml (preconcentration of 1.0 ml serum). With the present method digoxin and three of its cross-reactive metabolites were determined in serum taken from patients which were orally administered a 1-mg dose of digoxin. The results obtained with LC—ICD were c…
Differences in non-MHC restricted cytotoxic activities of human peripheral blood lymphocytes after transfusion with allogeneic leukocytes or platelet…
1990
Abstract MHC-unrestricted cytotoxic activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from 4–6 healthy donors was investigated before and after transfusion with allogeneic leukocytes or platelets. Natural killer and lectin-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (LDCC) of PBL was tested against K562 and Raji target cells in a 4-h and 16-h 51 Cr-release assay, respectively. After allotransfusion with leukocytes, we found increased cytotoxic activity of each donor's PBL against all the three targets on day 3 or 7. The highest non-specific cytotoxic activity was detected against the relatively NK resistant Raji target cells. The increase of cytotoxic activity was lowest against the LDCC target (PHA-treat…
Synergism between exposure to mercury and use of iodine supplements on thyroid hormones in pregnant women
2015
Objective: To evaluate the association between mercury exposure and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total triiodothyronine (TT3) and free thyroxine (FT4) levels during pregnancy as well as to explore if there is any synergic action between mercury and intake of iodine from different sources. Methods: The study population was 1407 pregnant women participating in the Spanish INMA birth cohort study. Total mercury concentrations were analyzed in cord blood. Thyroid hormones (THs) were measured in serum samples collected at 13.2 +/- 1.5 weeks of gestation. The association between mercury and TH levels was evaluated with multivariate linear regression models. Effect modification caused by iod…
