The late Pleistocene origin of the Italian and Maltese populations of Potamon fluviatile (Malacostraca: Decapoda): insights from an expanded sampling…

2017

Evidence available for most inland water and terrestrial organisms highlights the significant role played by southern Italy, Sicily and the Maltese islands as refuges during Pleistocene climatic fluctuations. However, to date, the hypothesis that these areas may have acted as Pleistocene refugia for the freshwater crab Potamon fluviatile has not been explicitly tested, and a recent origin of local P. fluviatile populations was proposed on the basis of a small set of analysed molecular data. We have thus expanded the currently available data set on the population genetic structure of P. fluviatile through dedicated samplings in Sicily (Italy, 18 specimens), the Maltese Islands (Malta, 15 spe…

Water temperature, not fish morph, determines parasite infections of sympatric Icelandic threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus)

2013

Parasite communities of fishes are known to respond directly to the abiotic environment of the host, for example, to water quality and water temperature. Biotic factors are also important as they affect the exposure profile through heterogeneities in parasite distribution in the environment. Parasites in a particular environment may pose a strong selection on fish. For example, ecological differences in selection by parasites have been hypothesized to facilitate evolutionary differentiation of freshwater fish morphs specializing on different food types. However, as parasites may also respond directly to abiotic environment the parasite risk does not depend only on biotic features of the hos…

2020

The non-marine carbonates related to microbial activity display a large range of morphologies and compositions and accumulate in various settings (freshwater, alkaline, and saline lakes, fluvial environments, thermal and freshwater springs, …). The variety of non-marine microbial carbonates and their particularity led to propose numerous and complex terminologies and classifications, making their use complicated and restrictive for the interpretation of depositional settings. Mineralization of these carbonates results from the interaction between biotic factors (intrinsic) and environmental factors (extrinsic and external) at multi-scales. The first aim of this work was to characterize morp…

Genetic diversity of two perch Perca fluviatilis populations of the Latgale region

2015

Molecular markers based on retrotransposons possibility of integration into genomes of many organisms are commonly used for genetic analysis of different species. The aim of this study was to test possibility of use those markers in perch and detect genetic diversity of populations of two lakes of the Latgale region of Latvia: Cirišs and Sventes. The distance between the lakes is nearly 60 km, they belong to the same Daugava river basin but are different from ecological point of view. Forty two blood samples of Perca fluviatilis were collected altogether. Extracted DNA was analyzed using inter-PBS amplification technique with specifically selected retrotransposon-based …

Makrozoobentosa indikatorgrupas upes nēģa Lampetra fluviatilis apdzīvotajās vietās

2020

2015

Bakalaura darbs izstrādāts Vides Risinājumu institūta un Alūksnes novada pašvaldības projekta „Alūksnes ezera gultnes, piekrastes zonas veģetācijas un ekosistēmas pētniecība” ietvaros. Darbā mērķis bija raksturot Alūksnes ezera zivju sabiedrības sastāvu un izpētīt dominējošo zivju sugu barošanās paradumus. Zinātniskā kontrolzveja pamatā veikta pēc Eiropas un Latvijas zivju paraugu ievākšanas standarta, izmantojot Nordic tipa daudzacu žauntīklus. Konstatēts, ka Alūksnes ezera zivju sabiedrība atbilst mērenās klimata joslas mezotrofu ezeru ihtiofaunai un ka no konkrētām zivju sugām gan pēc biomasas, gan pēc skaita dominēja asari Perca fluviatilis. Saistībā ar zivju barošanās paradumiem secinā…
