Constructing Appropriate Information in School Transition. Documents as Institutional Agents of Topicalising Children’s (In)Capabilities and Pedagogi…

2020

In this chapter, I investigate how school transition documentation, in addition to recording issues, also actively constructs ideas about the topical information, roles and responsibilities and, consequently, institutional reality in school transition. In a transition phase, documentation has a great potential serve as a tool for ensuring the continuity in pedagogical practices. However, documentation is often found to focus on illustrating subjectifying and problem-oriented pictures of children and their incapabilities instead of explicating pedagogical practices and professional responsibilities in transition. In this chapter, I utilise the discursive approach to analyse the ready-set tra…

Domestic Violence Interventions in Social and Health Care Settings: Challenges of Temporary Projects and Short-Term Solutions.

2020

Social welfare service and health care providers are in a key position to implement successful domestic violence (DV) interventions. However, it is known that DV intervention and prevention work is often lacking in coordination and continuity. In addition, the limited resources, hectic work pace, and changing practices negatively affect the development of successful ways to prevent and intervene in DV. This qualitative study involving 11 focus groups, composed of social welfare and health care professionals ( n = 51) in a midsized Finnish hospital, examined the challenges and possibilities within DV interventions and the adoption of good practices produced by a DV intervention development …

Impact of Demographic Differences on Color Preferences in the Interface Design of e-Services in Latvia

2018

In our study, we test users’ color preferences of interfaces of typical electronic services’ (e-services) environment. The motivation of our study is to explore discrepancy between (a) the high degree of availability of e-services in Latvia, and (b) low usage of these e-services among population. We aim to find the regularities regarding color preferences that could be useful in the development of e-services and that could support the rise of the usage of e-services in future. Although there are several reasons why people avoid using e-services (some of them socio-cognitive, some – technological), we would like to focus on a particular aspect – the colors of e-services interface. In particu…

Effective Field Theory

2015

Effective field theories (EFTs) are a highly important topic in Quantum Field Theory. Here we are going to shortly present some important highlights as well as the renormalization group equations for the Wilson coefficients. Afterwards we shall focus on one illustrative example and present the \(\textit{matching}\) procedure at the one-loop level. The infrared behaviour of EFTs is also covered with this example.

Younger children in ECEC: focus on the national steering documents in the Nordic countries

2015

The aim of this study was to review the national steering documents on early childhood education and care (ECEC) in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, with the focus on children up to the age of three, posing the question: What do these documents tell us about ECEC for younger children in the Nordic early childhood settings? Methodologically, a qualitative document analysis was applied. The documents provide a picture of young children whose age, individual needs and a number of other factors, such as cultural background, should be taken into account in ECEC. These children learn holistically, in close interaction with their environment. Their safety and well-being are seen as pa…

Management in the 24/7-society raises concerns of fairness and social responsibility

2018

Purpose Despite the pressure on work-family polices arising from the increase in nonstandard working times in various sectors, only a few studies have addressed management practices in 24/7 workplaces. This paper aims to investigate the challenges Finnish managers face in meeting the various tensions stemming from nonstandard working hours and services operating 24/7. Two typical 24/7 work contexts are focused: the hospitality and retail industries and flexibly scheduled early childhood education and care (ECEC) services. The emphasis is on management practices relating to the planning of work shifts and children’s care schedules. Design/methodology/approach Study 1 comprises focus group i…

Perspectives on Leadership in Early Childhood Education and Care Centers Through Community of Practice

2021

This article investigates early childhood education and care (ECEC) leadership through the concept of community of practice (COP). The focus is on ECEC leaders’ perceptions regarding their leadership during the educational changes taking place in the context of Finnish ECEC. The purpose is to increase understanding of how leaders see themselves in relation to the ECEC multi professional working community and practices of distributed leadership. The data are five focus group interviews of ECEC leaders analyzed with directed content analysis within the theoretical frame of domain, practice, and community forming the core of COP in Lave and Wenger. The results show how all three COP component…

Perceptions of early childhood education professionals on teacher leadership in Finland

2016

This study investigated perceptions of early childhood education (ECE) professionals employed at three ECE centres on teacher leadership enactment in Finland. These professionals comprised childcare nurses, teachers and ECE centre directors. Theoretically, the study was anchored on an analysis of teacher leadership and distributed leadership literature comprising research based in early childhood and school education contexts. Findings based on focus groups and interviews with participants suggest that teacher leadership was perceived as a responsibility of ECE pedagogy in Finland. Centre directors were considered remote from daily practice and leadership for pedagogy within the centres was…
