Host defences become increasingly costly as parasites breach successive lines of defence. Because selection favours hosts that successfully resist parasitism at the lowest possible cost, escalating coevolutionary arms races are likely to drive host defence portfolios towards ever more expensive strategies. We investigated the interplay between host defence portfolios and social parasite pressure by comparing 17 populations of two Temnothorax ant species. This qualitative case study describes a portfolio programme in the teaching of English as a foreign language in two Finnish upper secondary schools. Approximately 100 students participated in the portfolio programme, whose topic area was culture. Varhaiskasvatuksen työelämässä on ajankohtainen tarve koulutetuille varhaiskasvatuksen opettajille. Varhaiskasvatuksen opettajia koulutetaan vielä tällä hetkellä sekä yliopistoissa että ammattikorkeakouluissa. Vastavalmistuvilla varhaiskasvatuksen opettajilla on todettu olevan haasteita työelämään sitoutumisessa. Sitoutumista heikentää esimerkiksi epävarmuus oman osaamisen riittävyydestä opettajan työhön. Vuodesta 1994 lähtien suomalaiseen koulutusjärjestelmään kuuluva näyttötutkinto on vakiinnuttanut paikkansa osaamisen tunnustamisen muotona. Näyttötutkinnon houkuttelevuus perustuu osaamiskeskeisyyteen, jolloin vaikkapa aikuisopiskelija pystyy työn ohessa osoittamaan osaamistaan ja saavuttamaan tutkintotodistuksen.
