Follicular Adenomas Exhibit a Unique Metabolic Profile. 1H NMR Studies of Thyroid Lesions

2013

Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy. However, more than 90% of thyroid nodules are benign. It remains unclear whether thyroid carcinoma arises from preexisting benign nodules. Metabolomics can provide valuable and comprehensive information about low molecular weight compounds present in living systems and further our understanding of the biology regulating pathological processes. Herein, we applied 1H NMR-based metabolic profiling to identify the metabolites present in aqueous tissue extracts of healthy thyroid tissue (H), non-neoplastic nodules (NN), follicular adenomas (FA) and malignant thyroid cancer (TC) as an alternative way of investigating cancer lesions. Multivar…

Expression of the actin-bundling protein fascin in cultured human dendritic cells correlates with dendritic morphology and cell differentiation.

2000

Dendritic cells are key players of the immune system as they efficiently induce primary immune responses by activating naive T cells. We generated human dendritic cells from CD14+ blood precursors and investigated expression of the actin-bundling protein fascin during maturation by western blotting, immunofluorescence, and cytofluorometry. Cells obtained by culture of CD14+ blood precursors in the presence of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and interleukin-4, which were only weakly positive for the maturation marker CD83, expressed low amounts of fascin. Addition of a cytokine cocktail including tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-1beta, interleukin-6, and prostaglandi…

Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma Shows a Distinct Pattern of DNA Copy Number Aberrations That Correlates with Tumor Characteristics and Predicts Diseas…

2006

Abstract Splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) is an indolent B cell malignancy whose diagnosis is based on lymphocyte morphology, immunophenotype and marrow and/or splenic histology. Unlike other lymphomas, there is not a common chromosomal translocation specific for SMZL, and genetic prognostic factors are poorly defined. To investigate the pattern of genomic aberrations in SMZL, we applied comparative genomic hybridization to BAC microarrays (array CGH) to a well characterized series of 75 SMZL specimens. We applied two different 1 Mb-resolution BAC arrays: UCSF HumArray 3.2 and a novel array CGH platform developed at Univ. of Salamanca. These arrays allowed us to detect DNA copy number …

Caffeic acid skin absorption: Delivery of microparticles to hair follicles

2019

Graphical abstract: Emulsions containing CA were prepared, one of which contain free CA and the other microencapsulated CA. They were applied to delimited area of skin. Subsequently the tape stripping and differential striping methods were applied.

Autonomic, hormonal, and subjective responses to a modified version of the TSST: a pilot study

2021

Feature characterization of scarring and non-scarring types of alopecia by multiphoton microscopy (Conference Presentation)

2018

Treatment and management of alopecia are highly determined by an accurate diagnosis, which can be challenging due to the lack of methods to properly visualize hair follicles. Current standard diagnosis is based on dermoscopy for non-scarring alopecia and scalp biopsy for scarring types of alopecia. Dermoscopy can be inconclusive, while biopsy is a painful procedure. In this study, we used a clinical tomograph based on multiphoton microscopy (MPM) to non-invasively image the scalp of 5 healthy subjects and of 12 patients affected by non-scarring alopecia (androgenetic and areata) and scarring alopecia (frontal fibrosing). MPM is capable of non-invasive in vivo imaging of follicular structure…

Germinal center B cells govern their own fate via antibody feedback

2013

High-affinity antibodies reenter germinal centers (GCs) and limit antigen access, thus causing sustained directional evolution in GCs toward higher-affinity antibody production.

EZH2 mutations are frequent and represent an early event in follicular lymphoma

2013

Gain of function mutations in the H3K27 methyltransferase EZH2 represent a promising therapeutic target in germinal center lymphomas. In this study, we assessed the frequency and distribution of EZH2 mutations in a large cohort of patients with follicular lymphoma (FL) (n = 366) and performed a longitudinal analysis of mutation during the disease progression from FL to transformed FL (tFL) (n = 33). Mutations were detected at 3 recurrent mutation hot spots (Y646, A682, and A692) in 27% of FL cases with variant allele frequencies (VAF) ranging from 2% to 61%. By comparing VAF of EZH2 with other mutation targets (CREBBP, MLL2, TNFRSF14, and MEF2B), we were able to distinguish patients harbori…

Expression of neurotrophins, GDNF, and their receptors in rat thyroid tissue

1999

Levels of mRNA for neurotrophins (brain-derived neurotrophic factor, BDNF; neurotrophin 3, NT-3; neurotrophin 4, NT-4) and their receptors (trkA, trkB, trkC) and for glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and its receptors (ret, GDNFR-alpha) were measured in rat thyroid tissue by ribonuclease protection assays. In thyroid tissue the NT-3 mRNA level was threefold lower and the NT-4 mRNA level sixfold higher than those detected in adult rat hippocampus, while BDNF mRNA was undetectable. Very low levels of mRNA for truncated trkB and trkC receptors and no catalytic trkA, trkB or trkC were found. In conclusion NT-3 and NT-4, but not the corresponding functional receptors, are expres…
