Hard cap espresso extraction and liquid chromatography determination of bioactive compounds in vegetables and spices

Abstract A new analytical procedure, based on liquid chromatography with diode array and fluorescence detection, has been proposed for the determination of bioactive compounds in vegetables and spices after hard cap espresso extraction. This novel extraction system has been tested for the determination of capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin from fresh chilli and sweet pepper, piperine from ground pepper, curcumin from turmeric and curry, and myristicin from nutmeg. Extraction efficiency was evaluated by using acetonitrile:water and ethanol:water mixtures. The proposed method allows the extraction of samples with 100 mL of 60% (v/v) ethanol in water. This non-destructive method is based on the detection of the transmission of a neutron beam through an object in 2D (imaging) or 3D after rotating the sample (tomography). Abstract The correlation between the occurrence of four enniatins (ENA, ENA1, ENB, and ENB1) and beauvericin (BEA) and the weather parameters during anthesis and preharvest period was studied in 97 wheat samples collected in 2014 and 2015 across three counties from central and south Romania (Brasov, Dâmboviţa, and Teleorman). The highest mean values of ENA (16.1 μg kg −1 ) and ENB (147.1 μg kg −1 ) were measured in the samples from Brasov county in the harvest year 2015, whereas for ENA1 and ENB1 the highest means (55.2 μg kg −1 , and 108.0 μg kg −1 , respectively) were noted in samples from Teleorman county in 2014. ABSTRACTChemical composition and phytotoxicity of oregano, marjoram and Thymus mastichina essential oils against Portulaca oleracea L., Lolium multiflorum Lam. and Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. has been investigated. Seventy-seven compounds reaching 97.3% and 99.4% were identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Abstract Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pollutants produced during incomplete combustion of organic matter and several industrial processes. Humans can be exposed to PAHs through ingestion of food, inhalation of tobacco smoke or polluted air, and dermal contact, causing immunologic, developmental, and reproductive problems. Arable soils are a large source of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, making up half of the biogenic emissions worldwide. Estimating their source strength requires methods capable of capturing the spatial and temporal variability of N2O emissions, along with the effects of crop management.
