One-Pot Synthesis to Quinone-Based Diaza[3.3]cyclophanes

A simple one-pot synthesis to [3.3]cyclophanes that involves quinone moieties was found. The protocol tolerates a variety of amines that include aliphatic and aromatic structures with different functional groups, such as hydroxy groups, amides, and terminal double and triple bonds. The straightforward synthesis can be performed by a twofold N-alkylation reaction with 2,5-bis(bromomethyl)-3,6-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (1). Neither anhydrous nor inert conditions are required. Fluorine-Containing Drugs Approved by the FDA in 2018

Over the last two decades, fluorine substitution has become one of the essential structural traits in modern pharmaceuticals. Thus, about half of the most successful drugs (blockbuster drugs) contain fluorine atoms. In this review, we profile 17 fluorine-containing drugs approved by the food and drug administration (FDA) in 2018. The newly approved pharmaceuticals feature several types of aromatic F and CF3 , as well as aliphatic (CF2 ) substitution, offering advances in the treatment of various diseases, including cancer, HIV, malarial and smallpox infections.
Herbicidal value of essential oils from oregano-like flavour species

ABSTRACTChemical composition and phytotoxicity of oregano, marjoram and Thymus mastichina essential oils against Portulaca oleracea L., Lolium multiflorum Lam. and Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. has been investigated. Seventy-seven compounds reaching 97.3% and 99.4% were identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Diastereoselectivity of the Addition of Propargylic Magnesium Reagents to Fluorinated Aromatic Sulfinyl Imines.

The addition of propargylmagnesium bromide to fluorinated aromatic sulfinyl imines gave homopropargyl amines with total regio- and diastereoselection. Complete reversal of diastereoselectivity can be achieved in some cases using coordinating (THF) or noncoordinating (DCM) solvents. Substituted propargylic magnesium reagents have been also tested toward fluorinated aryl sulfinyl imines affording chiral homoallenyl amines with good yields and selectivity control. DFT calculations helped to rationalize the origin of the experimental regio- and diastereoselectivities observed in each case.

This study looked at predictors of exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) with a focus on dietary and household-level factors. Concentrations of BDE-47, -99, -153, and -209 and their sum (∑PBDEs) were measured in cord serum. Spanish women (n = 541) completed two semiquantitative food frequency questionnaires during the first and third trimesters of pregnancy. The daily mean intake (grams) of eggs, dairy products, meat, cereals and pasta, vegetables and pulses, fruits, shellfish and cephalopods, and fish, and the weekly mean intake (servings) of lean, large oily, other oily, and other fish from both questionnaires were averaged. Changes in climate affected human societies throughout the last millennium. While European cold periods in the 17th and 18th century have been assessed in detail, earlier cold periods received much less attention due to sparse information available. New evidence from proxy archives, historical documentary sources and climate model simulations permit us to provide an interdisciplinary, systematic assessment of an exceptionally cold period in the 15th century. Abstract Urban areas in the Brazilian Amazon have grown at an unprecedented rate during the last years. About 90% of the wastewater produced by these urban areas are discharged untreated into Amazonian freshwater ecosystems, constituting a potential environmental pathway for pharmaceuticals and other chemicals consumed by modern societies (e.g. psychostimulants, personal-care products, hormones). Subarctic lakes are getting warmer and more productive due to the joint effects of climate change and intensive land-use practices (e.g. forest clear-cutting and peatland ditching), processes that potentially increase leaching of peat- and soil-stored mercury into lake ecosystems. Mercury is considered a neurotoxicant and human exposure occurs mainly from the consumption of marine species. We aimed to describe total mercury concentrations (THg) and associated factors in 9-year old children, as well as to explore the trend in THg from 4 to 9 years of age. The study population consisted of 9-year-old children participating in the INMA (Environment and Childhood) birth cohort study in Valencia, Spain (n = 405, 2013–2014).
