Projections of temperature-related excess mortality under climate change scenarios.

2017

Background: Climate change can directly affect human health by varying exposure to non-optimal outdoor temperature. However, evidence on this direct impact at a global scale is limited, mainly due to issues in modelling and projecting complex and highly heterogeneous epidemiological relationships across different populations and climates. Methods: We collected observed daily time series of mean temperature and mortality counts for all causes or non-external causes only, in periods ranging from Jan 1, 1984, to Dec 31, 2015, from various locations across the globe through the Multi-Country Multi-City Collaborative Research Network. We estimated temperature–mortality relationships through a tw…

Footprint Curvature in Spanish Women: Implications for Footwear Fit

2020

The incorrect adjustment of footwear produces alterations in the foot that affect quality of life. The usual measurements for shoe design are lengths, widths and girths, but these measures are insufficient. The foot presents an angle between the forefoot and the rearfoot in the transverse plane, which is associated with foot pronation, hallux valgus and metatarsus adductus. Here, we aimed at identifying the groups formed by the angulations between the forefoot and rearfoot using a sample of footprints from 102 Spanish women. The angle between the forefoot and rearfoot was measured according to the method described by Bunch. A cluster analysis was performed using the K-means algorithm. Footp…

Assessment of Gait after Treatment of Tibial Nonunion with the Ilizarov Method

2021

Background: Tibial nonunion is a common bone union disorder leading to abnormal gait, and thus reducing quality of life in the social dimension. Research question: The aim of our work was to comprehensively assess gait parameters of patients who had undergone Ilizarov treatment for tibial nonunion compared to a control group of healthy individuals. Methods: This study evaluated patients treated for aseptic tibial nonunion with the Ilizarov method. 24 patients with a mean age of 55.0 years were included in the study. The control group consisted of 32 healthy volunteers with no significant medical history who were selected to match the gender and age of patients in the study group so that the…

Impact of Depression on Patients With Hemophilia: A Retrospective Case-Control Research

2022

BackgroundHemophilia is an inherited recessive hemorrhagic disorder of the X-linked type, suffered by the male sex. Adults with hemophilia are coping with numerous diagnostics, associated comorbidities, pain, and difficult gait by arthropathy in ankles and feet. Physical pains contribute to depression in patients with hemophilia.PurposeThe study aimed to assess the impact of depression in adult patient with hemophilia and to compare it with healthy matched-paired controls. Methods: The sample consisted of 100 participants (median age 42.50 ± 30). Patients with hemophilia were recruited from Spanish Hemophiliac Associations (n = 50) and healthy subjects (n = 50) from a Clinic Podiatry Practi…

Plantar pressure and EMG activity of simulated and actual ski jumping take-off

2001

Plantar pressures and activation of the four muscles (VL - vastus lateralis, GL - gluteus, TA - tibialis anterior and GA - lat. gastrocnemius) were measured from ten ski jumpers under simulated laboratory conditions with training shoes (Lab TS) and with jumping boots (Lab JB) as well as in actual hill jumping conditions (Hill). The most significant differences between measured conditions were found in muscle activation patterns and plantar pressures prior to take-off. The centrifugal force due to the curvature of the inrun under actual hill jumping conditions caused extra pressure under the fore and rear parts of the feet (P<0.001) and therefore higher activation in all muscles (P<0.001 for…

Individuālu mīksto kontaktlēcu pielietojums acs aberāciju kompensācijai

2017

Present status of Phytophthora species in the Mediterranean area, especially in relation to citrus

1990

Of the 44 currently accepted species of Phytophthora, 18 have been reported in the Mediterranean area. The status of each is briefly reviewed. On citrus, P. citrophthora and P. nicotianae var. parasitica are mainly responsible for foot rot and gummosis, and in addition P. hibernalis, P. syringae, P. cifricola and P. cactorum for brown rot of fruits. The incidence of these species is closely linked to their temperature requirements. The use of sour orange as a resistant rootstock has long provided satisfactory control of foot rot and gummosis, while chemical treatments are effective against brown rot. However, there are indications that, with changingcultural practices, the resistance of sou…

FIFA World Cup 2006 and its legacy on tourism

2007

This chapter discusses the legacy of the FIFA Football World Cup 2006 and its effects on tourism. First of all, the ‘concept of legacy’ is defined. The problems of measuring and forecasting tourism legacy are then discussed. Facts are presented which demonstrate that benchmarks and methods for measuring tourism growth triggered by a major football tournament are not relevant for detecting event tourism legacy. Hence, a bottom-up approach is introduced, which identifies the event legacy by evaluating all football World Cup-related changes in the host cities and the host country. These changes are the so called six ‘event structures’ (infrastructure, knowledge, image, emotions, networks, cult…

Conclusion and Future

2014

After being awarded the EURO 2008, Switzerland faced several challenges related to hosting such a mega sport event. The research has explored how knowledge transfer and the use of certain management tools were important in Switzerland’s organization of fifteen matches and to achieving a happy and prosperous football festival in Switzerland.
