Pedicled Flaps for Anterior Chest Wall Reconstruction

2020

Pedicled local or regional flaps are the main reconstructive tool for chest wall defects. Muscle or musculocutaneous flaps are most commonly used, with the latissimus dorsi and the pectoralis major being the workhorse flaps. However, perforator flaps have recently affirmed even for reconstruction of complex defects. A thorough knowledge of the vascular anatomy of the thorax and of the patient’s medical history is essential for selecting the best reconstructive option. The defect location, size, and depth as well as previous surgeries in the same area are the main issues affecting the reconstructive choices.

Functional implications of the staminal lever mechanism in Salvia cyclostegia (Lamiaceae)

2011

Flower morphology and inflorescence architecture affect pollinator foraging behaviour and thereby influence the process of pollination and the reproductive success of plants. This study explored possible ecological functions of the lever-like stamens and the floral design in Salvia cyclostegia.Flower construction was experimentally manipulated by removing either the lower lever arms or the upper fertile thecae of the two stamens from a flower. The two types of manipulated individuals were intermixed with the control ones and randomly distributed in the population.Removing the sterile lower lever arms significantly reduced handling time per flower of the main pollinator, Bombus personatus. Risk Burden of Coronary Perforation in Chronic Total Occlusion Recanalization: Latin American CTO Registry Analysis

2022

Background Coronary perforation is a life‐threatening complication of acute percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusions (CTO), but data on midterm outcomes are limited. Methods and Results Data from LATAM (Latin American)‐CTO Registry (57 centers; 9 countries) were analyzed. We assessed the risk of 30‐day, 1‐year major adverse cardiac events of coronary perforation using time‐to‐event and weighted composite end point analysis having CTO PCI without perforation as comparators. Additionally, we studied the independent predictors of perforation in these patients. Of 2054 patients who underwent CTO PCI between 2015 and 2018, the median Multicenter CTO Registry in Japa…

[The effect of instrumentation on original apical foramen shape using steel vs niti rotatory: computerized analysis]

2002

BACKGROUND. A fundamental requirement to obtain a correct endodontic preparation depends on the respect, during cleaning and shaping, of the original morphology of the apical foramen, (AF), so that the filling material will form a complete seal. METHODS. In our previous studies, in order to verify if this presumption was respected using rotary NiTi instruments with cutting tip, we instrumented extracted teeth characterised by a different degree of root curvatures. Using a standardized system to replace the sample, the original shape of the apical foramen of each tooth was recorded using a computerised technique and then compared to the shape after instrumentation. The data showed difference…

Comparison of the volatile oils ofHypericum scabrum L. andHypericum perforatum L. from Turkey

1997

The composition of the volatile oils obtained from the aerial parts of Hypericum scabrum L. and H. perforatum L. was analysed by GC and GC‐MS. While the oil of H. scabrum L. contained a-pinene (71.6%), b-caryophyllene (4.8%), myrcene (3.8%), cadalene (3.4%) and b-pinene (2.9%), the oil of H. perforatum L. contained a-pinene (61.7%), 3-carene (7.5%), b-caryophyllene (5.5%), myrcene (3.6%), cadalene (3.2%) and other components. Twenty-nine and 27 terpenoid compounds have been identified in the volatile oils of H. scabrum L. and H. perforatum L., respectively. #1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

First Record of Eurasian Spoonbills Platalea leucorodia feeding on Branchiopoda in a temporary wetland

2020

The diet of the Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia is poorly documented with only the most common prey groups known, namely small fishes, amphibians, reptiles, crustaceans, molluscs, worms, leeches and plant material. Here, the first observations of three small crustaceans, Branchiopoda Triops cancriformis (Notostraca), Chirocephalus diaphanus (Anostraca), and Cyzicus tetracerus (Spinicaudata) are documented as prey of the Eurasian Spoonbill in a temporary wetland near the San Teodoro salt pan (Marsala, western Sicily). These observations provide a new insight into the foraging ecology of the species, showing its extreme opportunism in targeting small prey when feeding in a temporary we…

Comments on Guimarães & Sawaya. Pretending to be venomous: is a snake's head shape a trustworthy signal to a predator?

2011

Several species of non-venomous snake are known to flatten their heads when disturbed, and this behaviour has been suggested to be a mimicry of vipers (Arnold & Ovenden 2002, Hailey & Davies 1986, Young et al. 1999). Using plasticine models, Guimaraes & Sawaya (2011) tested the antipredatory function of a triangular head shape in snakes. Their article presents the first published empirical experiment testing the adaptive significance of vipers’ triangular head shape. Guimaraes & Sawaya (2011) found no support for the viper mimicry hypothesis. Accordingly, they concluded that ‘the shape of [the] head seemed not to confer advantage itself’. Although the use of plasticine models is a generally…

Cranial circulation of the pen-tailed tree shrewPtilocercus lowii and relationships of Scandentia

1994

The major cranial arteries and veins are described for a 30-mm crown-rump length fetus of the pen-tailed tree shrewPtilocercus lowii, and comparisons are made with cranial vessels reported in the tree shrewTupaia and with the vascular pattern reconstructed for primitive eutherians.Ptilocercus shares a number of derived features of the cranial circulation withTupaia, which, therefore, represent synapomorphies of tree shrews (Tupaiidae, Scandentia). Included are (1) the enclosure of the intratympanic portion of the internal carotid artery in a bony canal that is floored proximally and distally by the entotympanic and by the petrosal in between, (2) the enclosure of the intratympanic portion o…
