3-dimensional Analysis and Literature Review of the Root Canal Morphology and Physiological Foramen Geometry of 125 Mandibular Incisors by Means of M…

2019

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to examine the root canal system morphology of mandibular incisors by means of micro–computed tomographic imaging. Methods The root canal configuration, physiological foramina, frequency of accessory and connecting canals, and the size and shape of the physiological foramina of 125 mandibular incisors were investigated by means of micro-CT and 3-dimensional imaging software. Root canal configuration of the coronal, middle, and apical thirds and the physiological foramina number are described by a 4-digit system code. Results The most frequent root canal configurations were 1-1-1/1 (56%), 1-2-1/1 (17.6%), and 1-1-1/2 (10.4%); 9 additional diffe…

Micro-CT study of the root canal anatomy of maxillary canines

2017

Background This study aimed to describe the anatomy of maxillary canines from a Western Mexican sub-population using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Material and Methods Maxillary canines (n=32) were scanned at 19.6µm voxel resolution. Number and location of canals, the distance between the cemento-enamel junction and apex, occurrence of accessory and lateral canals, presence of oval canals, number of foraminas as well as two- (area, perimeter, roundness, aspect ratio, major and minor diameters) and three-dimensional (volume, surface area, and SMI) analysis were performed. Data of two-dimensional analyses at 5 different apical levels was statistically compared using Kruskal-Wallis tes…

Analysis of the relationship between the double transverse foramen and the possibility of developing clinical symptoms after whiplash

2017

Introduction: Currently there is no information about the possibility of developing clinical symptoms after whiplash in double transverse foramen subjects. Our aim was to test whether subjects with double transverse foramen have an increased risk of presenting with acute headache, dizziness, vertebral artery dissection, and vomiting after whiplash. Methods: We recorded the absence/presence of double transverse foramen, and the absence/presence of neck pain, acute headache, dizziness, vertebral artery dissection, and vomiting in 85 patients who had suffered whiplash injuries in car rear-end impacts in road traffic accidents. We used the odds ratio test to determine whether double transverse …

Recurrent cerebral ischaemia in a pregnant woman with patent foramen ovale II° and thrombophilia.

2014

SummaryThis case report concerns a pregnant multipara (age: 27 years) in the 16th gestational week. She developed a sudden onset of paraesthesia in her left lower arm although injecting dalteparin 5000 IU once daily subcutaneously (s. c.) due to a heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation and a prior miscarriage in the first pregnancy and preeclampsia in her third pregnancy. After the miscarriage she delivered two healthy children under prophylactic anticoagulation with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). Now via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) she was diagnosed as having multiple cerebral ischaemic lesions. Further workup revealed the presence of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) II° but no venou…

Double Retrotransverse Foramen of Atlas (C1)

2018

Background The retrotransverse foramen is a nonmetric variant of C1 that consists of an abnormal accessory foramen on the posterior root of the transverse process. Case Description During a study on the prevalence of the retrotransverse foramen in 150 dry C1 vertebrae, we observed an exceptional C1 (0.67%) with a right double retrotransverse foramen of the 14 C1 vertebrae (9.3%). This has not been reported previously in the literature. No osteogenic reaction and no degenerative signs were observed in this C1 with the double retrotransverse foramen. Conclusions Neurosurgeons should be aware of the possible presence of the “conventional” retrotransverse foramen and the “exceptional” double re…

Non-syndromic supernumerary premolars

2010

Objective: The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence of non-syndromic supernumerary premolars, to classify them and to identify the complications related to them. Study Design: This retrospective cohort study was composed of 8400 panoramic radiographs of patients who presented at our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Services from January 1998 to May 2008. The number of supernumerary premolars, their localization, the ages and the sex of the patients, any associated complications and treatment methods were estimated. Results and Conclusion: A total of 20 supernumerary premolar teeth were found in 10 of the 8400 patients (0.24%) with 7 of those being females and three males. Thr…

Anatomical characteristics and visibility of mental foramen and accessory mental foramen: Panoramic radiography vs. cone beam CT.

2015

Background: The mental foramen (MF) is a small foramen located in the anterolateral region of the mandible through which the mental nerve and vessels emerge. The knowledge on the anatomic characteristics and variations of MF is very important in surgical procedures involving that area. The aim of this study was two-fold: firstly, to analyze the anatomic characteristics of MF and the presence of accessory mental foramen (AMF) using CBCT and, secondly, to compare the capability of CBCT and PAN in terms of MF and AMF visualization, as well as influencing factors. Material and Methods: A sample of 344 CBCT scans was analyzed for presence and characteristics (i.e. diameter, area, shape, exit ang…

Characteristics of anatomical landmarks in the mandibular interforaminal region: A cone-beam computed tomography study

2011

Objectives: This study was conducted to assess appearance, visibility, location and course of anatomical landmarks in mandibular interforaminal region using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Study design: A total of 96 CBCT examinations was re-evaluated to exploit anatomical landmarks. The examinations used the Promax 3D CBCT unit. A sole examiner carried out all the measurements. Visibilities of the anatomical landmarks were scored using a four-point rating scale. Results: The mandibular foramen, anterior loop, incisive canal and lingual foramen were observed in 100,84,83,49 % of the images, respectively. The mean size, diameter and width of anterior loop, incisive canal and lingual fo…

A retrospective radiographic evaluation of the anterior loop of the mental nerve: Comparison between panoramic radiography and cone beam computerized…

2014

Objectives: To compare the prevalence and the length of mental loop, measured with panoramic radiography (PR) and cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT). Material and Methods: PG and CBCT images where analyzed by a single calibrated examiner to determine the presence and the position of the mental foramen (MF), its distance to the lower mandible border, the anterior length of the mental loop (ML) and the bone quality in 82 PR and 82 CBCT. Results: ML was identified in 36.6 % of PR and 48.8 % of CBCT. PR showed a magnification of 1.87 when compared to CBCT. The mean of anterior extension of the inferior alveolar nerve and the distance to the inferior border of the mandible was higher for P…

Endoscope-assisted Brain Surgery: Part 2—Analysis of 380 Procedures

1998

Objectives Microsurgical techniques and instruments that help to reduce intraoperative retraction of normal intracranial neuronal and vascular structures contribute to improved postoperative results. To achieve sufficient control of the operating field without retraction of neurovascular components, the resection of dura and bone edges is frequently required, which, on the other hand, increases operating time and operation-related trauma. The use of endoscopes may help to reduce retraction and, at the same time, may help to avoid additional dura and bone resection. The aim of this study is to describe the principles on which the technique of endoscope-assisted brain surgery is based, to giv…
