Benchmarking of strength models for unidirectional composites under longitudinal tension

2018

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd Several modelling approaches are available in the literature to predict longitudinal tensile failure of fibre-reinforced polymers. However, a systematic, blind and unbiased comparison between the predictions from the different models and against experimental data has never been performed. This paper presents a benchmarking exercise performed for three different models from the literature: (i) an analytical hierarchical scaling law for composite fibre bundles, (ii) direct numerical simulations of composite fibre bundles, and (iii) a multiscale finite-element simulation method. The results show that there are significant discrepancies between the predictions of the differe…

Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Insulating Sustainable Mortars with Ampelodesmos mauritanicus and Pennisetum setaceum Plants as Aggregates

2021

The use of natural fibers in cement composites is a widening research field as their application can enhance the mechanical and thermal behavior of cement mortars and limit their carbon footprint. In this paper, two different wild grasses, i.e., Ampelodesmos mauritanicus, also called diss, and Pennisetum setaceum, also known as crimson fountaingrass, are used as a source of natural aggregates for cement mortars. The main purpose is to assess the possibility of using the more invasive crimson fountaingrass in place of diss in cement-based vegetable concrete. The two plant fibers have been characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), helium picnometry and thermogravimetric an…

El viaje desde los cuestionarios Likert a los cuestionarios de elección forzosa: evidencia de la invarianza de los parámetros de los ítems

2019

ABSTRACT Multidimensional forced-choice questionnaires are widely regarded in the personnel selection literature for their ability to control response biases. Recently developed IRT models usually rely on the assumption that item parameters remain invariant when they are paired in forced-choice blocks, without giving it much consideration. This study aims to test this assumption empirically on the MUPP-2PL model, comparing the parameter estimates of the forced-choice format to their graded-scale equivalent on a Big Five personality instrument. The assumption was found to hold reasonably well, especially for the discrimination parameters. In the cases in which it was violated, we briefly dis…

Thermal NDT of glass reinforced composite panels for naval applications by means of a linear infrared scanner

2009

The work describes the development and application of a low cost Thermal NDT set-up to investigate the influence of delamination defects on thick glass fibre reinforced composite laminates simulating typical hull monolithic GRP panels. Two active thermographic techniques have been implemented in particular: a pulsed thermography and a step heating scheme. A 12 mm thick cross-ply panel has been manufactured and delamination defects simulated in two different ways: by embedding patches of folded Teflon sheets, and by drilling flat bottomed back holes. A number of defects was then positioned at three different depths form the scanned surfaces, measuring ¼, ½ and ¾ of the laminate thickness. A …

Respiratory mechanics measured by forced oscillations during mechanical ventilation through a tracheal tube

2011

The forced oscillation technique (FOT) allows the measurement of respiratory mechanics in the intensive care setting. The aim of this study was to compare the FOT with a reference method during mechanical ventilation through a tracheal tube. The respiratory impedance spectra were measured by FOT in nine anaesthetized pigs, and resistance and compliance were estimated on the basis of a linear resistance-compliance inertance model. In comparison, resistance and compliance were quantified by the multiple linear regression analysis (LSF) of conventional ventilator waveforms to the equation of motion. The resistance of the sample was found to range from 6 to 21 cmH(2)O s l(-1) and the compliance…

Analytical solution for the magneto-electro-elastic bimorph beam forced vibrations problem

2009

Based on the Timoshenko beam theory and on the assumption that the electric and magnetic fields can be treated as steady, since elastic waves propagate very slowly with respect to electromagnetic ones, a general analytical solution for the transient analysis of a magneto-electro-elastic bimorph beam is obtained. General magneto-electric boundary conditions can be applied on the top and bottom surfaces of the beam, allowing us to study the response of the bilayer structure to electromagnetic stimuli. The model reveals that the magneto-electric loads enter the solution as an equivalent external bending moment per unit length and as time-dependent mechanical boundary conditions through the def…

Interlaminar fracture toughness behavior of electron-beam cured carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy-resin composites

2013

The work describes the preparation and physical-mechanical characterization of unidirectional CFRP panels manufactured by an electron beam curing technique. Delamination fracture toughness in Mode I and II is investigated in order to evaluate the influence of fiber–matrix adhesion strength, matrix toughness and matrix crosslinking density as determined by the radiation curing process. A matrix system comprising a DGEBA epoxy monomer and an initiator of cationic polymerization have been used, with one batch of resin mixed with a PES monomer in order to enhance matrix toughness. Curing was achieved with a pulsed 10 MeV Electron Beam accelerator. Thermally cured composite systems have also bee…

Migrazioni forzate e diritti disattesi.

Residual out-of-plane capacity of infills damaged by in-plane cyclic loads

2020

Abstract During earthquakes, infills are subjected to In-Plane (IP) and Out-Of-Plane (OOP) actions. In the case of strong earthquakes, infills may progressively change their mechanical behavior resulting in a reduction of IP and OOP stiffness and strength. Recent earthquakes have proved that the OOP collapse of infills is a diffused mechanism also for buildings designed to resist seismic events in agreement to the most modern codes. This is potentially a very dangerous event with risk for human health. The strong interaction between IP and OOP behavior of infills traduces in a progressive reduction of the OOP strength. The IP damaging loads may cause a loss of the OOP capacity not predicted…
