The synergy between the CsPbBr3 nanoparticle surface and the organic ligand becomes manifest in a demanding carbon–carbon coupling reaction
2020
We demonstrate here the suitability of CsPbBr3nanoparticles as photosensitizers for a demanding photoredox catalytic homo- and cross-coupling of alkyl bromides at room temperature by merely using visible light and an electron donor, thanks to the cooperative action between the nanoparticle surface and organic capping. Applications of “Forced Rayleigh Scattering” and “Photon Correlation Spectroscopy” for the examination of transport properties in polymer melts
2007
The importance of optical techniques for the characterization of the dynamics in polymers has increased in the last 10 years. This was caused by the rapid development in optics and microelectronics which has made these techniques easily available and extremely precise. However, in case of the examination of transport properties in bulk polymers, new difficulties arise due to the comparably slow dynamics underlying these phenomena. The topic of this paper is a small survey of two optical techniques which can be applied to solve the arising problems and a presentation of some results of our working group concerning slow translational transport processes in polymers. In a first part, the techn…
Steel Fibres: Effective Way to Prevent Failure of the Concrete Bonded with FRP Sheets
2016
Although the efficiency of steel fibres for improving mechanical properties (cracking resistance and failure toughness) of the concrete has been broadly discussed in the literature, the number of studies dedicated to the fibre effect on structural behaviour of the externally bonded elements is limited. This experimental study investigates the influence of steel fibres on the failure character of concrete elements strengthened with external carbon fibre reinforced polymer sheets. The elements were subjected to different loading conditions. The test data of four ties and eight beams are presented. Different materials were used for the internal bar reinforcement: in addition to the conventiona…
Biomarkers in obstructive respiratory diseases: An update
2012
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by chronic inflammation of the airways, with the involvement of many inflammatory cells and mediators. Traditionally, this inflammation is thought to spread to a systemic level, thus inducing damage of different organs. However, other pathogenetic mechanisms could take part to the above-described process, and some open questions need to be solved. Due to the burden and increasing prevalence of COPD, the opportunity to find biomarkers that can potentially be useful in identifying individuals with the disease, or better, prior to symptoms onset, to diagnose and properly manage the respiratory symptoms, as well as to evaluate the re…
Cupole in cemento armato in Sicilia occidentale nella prima metà del Novecento
2014
The paper intends to examine through three case studies the change introduced by the technology of reinforced concrete in the construction of domes. After a brief description of the geometric and architectural characteristics of reinforced concrete domes, the study focuses on three interventions, for which a considerable archival documentation was collected. Chronologically the first intervention is related to the construction of the dome of the mother-church of Bisacquino (1923-25), built on the basis of the architectural project and under the direction of the engineer Pietro Scibilia. The second concerns the reconstruction of the dome of Sant’Ignazio martire all'Olivella church in Palermo…
Assessment and strengthening of reinforced concrete bridges with half-joint deterioration
2022
Existing Niagara-type concrete cantilever bridges, which in Italy are called Gerber bridges, suffer from degradation due to reinforcement corrosion and a consequent reduced load-bearing capacity. The assessment of these structures is therefore an important part of the procedures for analyzing the state of existing bridges and any interventions required for their retrofitting. In particular, safety against failure of the half-joint must be evaluated with respect to the behavior of the entire bridge and its state of conservation, determining what the conditions are that lead to failure, in terms of loads, state of stress, and possibly cracking state. This evaluation has to be carried out cons…
An Ethnographic Study of Deaf Refugees Seeking Asylum in Finland
2019
Deaf asylum seekers are a marginalized group of people in refugee and forced migration studies. The aim of this paper is to explore and highlight the experiences of deaf asylum seekers in the asylum procedure in Finland. The data come from linguistic ethnographic methods, interviews, and ethnographic observation with 10 deaf asylum seekers. While living in the reception centers, the study participants have faced a range of linguistic and social challenges. The findings show that language barriers appeared from day one after the participants&rsquo
Review of photoelastic image analysis applied to structural birefringent materials: glass and polymers
2015
Photoelasticity is particularly suitable for the analysis of the stress state in structural materials that are transparent and birefringent. Some techniques of digital photoelasticity (phase shifting and RGB) are applied to the analysis of stress field in two classes of structural materials. The first one consists of tempered glasses, such as those used in the automotive and architectural fields. The second one consists of thermoset polymers, typically used as matrices in fiber reinforced plastic structural composites. The birefringence of such resins is, in particular, exploited to investigate the development of swelling stresses and changes in fracture toughness as induced by water uptake…
